MOD ANNOUNCEMENTS WELCOME TO R/TUFTING: Important links, information and mega-threads.

Hello tufters!

This is a post for old and new tufters and r/tufting users that will include links to all important Mega Threads and the wiki. Reddit only allows for two pinned posts and this makes it difficult to assist users navigating this information. This post will permanently sit pinned at the top of the sub and should make it easier to identify these threads, and the sub wiki.

Sub-Wiki

The wiki is updated on a regular basis to include new and evolving information to assist in all aspects of tufting. The wiki is over 14,000 words and includes 68 subheadings that specifically relate to the most asked questions and most common concerns raised by tufters.

Important mega-threads:

  • Materials and Supply Master Thread: With over 40,000 members from all over the world, this is the place to inquire about and recommend different location specific suppliers for materials.
  • Buy and Sell Master Thread: All posts regarding the selling of supplies should be posted in this sub, according to the directions outlined in the post.
  • Troubleshooting Master Thread: This is a dedicated subreddit for questions and requests for advice related to troubleshooting.

Some things to keep in mind when posting:

  • Always read the sub rules before posting. This may sound obvious but there are a lot of posts made in the sub each day that need to be removed because they violate the sub rules.
  • Asking for advice on pricing and valuing works for sale. This is something that a lot of tufters seek advice on, however it is difficult to effectively value someone else's work due to a lot of factors that are covered here in the sub wiki. Over the years since tufting has gained in popularity, there is also a growing sense in the community that certain standards and criterion should be met before someone starts selling their work. While this is not the consensus amongst all tufters, it is often the case that newer users asking for advice have not taken this into consideration and the comments of these posts tends to reflect this. Please read the sub rules as posts asking for pricing advice will be removed. Please feel free to include requests for pricing advice in the text of your post and include as much information (as mentioned in the wiki) as possible in order to get realistic advice.
  • Low effort posts. All posts must include a clear and specific title, especially when seeking advice or opinions from other users. As per the sub rules, any post with a vague title such as 'help' with no other explanation will be removed.

As always, thank-you for being here and happy tufting!

I finished this rug up a little bit ago. This was my largest one so far and it made me realize I need a table to work on these rugs at. Sitting on the floor to shave this wasn't fun.

Advice Turning rugs into clothes, anyone else try this and have any tips?

I had this crazy idea to make a vest, I took apart an old denim vest and traced it out, made a design and now I’ve gotten to the point where I’ve cut it out and glued the yarn down. everything is going as well as I could hope. log ways to go, plus I still need to make the front panels

however I’ve gotten to the point where i need the glue a backing down and I realized I didn't think this though, and I guess my question is:

what sort of alternative “fabrics” will work beyond the non slip primary tufting cloth I usually use?

also any other tips? I’m sorta winging this, and over also never sewn a vest before so I still sorta need to figure that out….

Troubleshooting Still same stitching issue

Hey everyone still having the same issue. Almost seems to be getting worse. At what point do I just say fuck it and buy a new gun?!! Trying to stay positive because really enjoy this but I seriously can’t figure out why my stitches end up this way, I don’t know enough about the mechanics of the gun to comfortably take it apart and mess with the settings either. But it’s gotta be the gun right… right?!

Newbie Needing Help GTA VI and some questions

Post image
46 Upvotes

to celebrate the release of GTA 5 (which I can't play as a PC gamer) I have created this rug. I tried making a gradient by tufting into part of the previous color or mixing 2 colors, but I didn't like how it turned out so I used "block" gradient on the main background and used the "tuft into the previous color" method on the small outline. Overall I am quite happy how it turned out but I have some questions:

- the rug and especially the letters look a bit warped. Imho the letters on the left should be a bit more to the botton. Any ways to fix it bevore and after glueing?

- The black and colored outline of the letters are only 1 line (2 strands). Same goes for the VI outline. I am not sure if and what to carve. Currently I'm leaning to carve the main letters and the black outline and maybe the colored outline as well. What is your opinion?

Newbie Needing Help Should I just scrap it?

Post image

I was too focused on getting the rug to be as large as possible that I forgot to leave space for the gun to get in-between the frame. I'm assuming there's no fix or tricks to make it work? Especially as I'm thinking the antennae will need a border, meaning so will the rest of the rug.

Work in progress Stretching Frame

Here is a photo of the custom frame I build. You put your backing on tight and pull out the setup blocks and tighten down on the rods and bolts. Works great when you have to leave the backing on your frame for a long period of time. You can just re-tighten the bolts when you loose the tention. The nails are spaced 1/4 inch apart. The tresstle legs are made of heavy ash wood and the frame is White Spruce. This design can me made of any type of wood. I have made them in Maple, Ash and Walnut for my customers.

Newbie Needing Help Glue recommendations

Hello I’m going to try tufting for the first time and was wondering what glue you guys recommend? Both for the back of the rug and to add backing onto it. Also Is there’s a glue that works for both?

Newbie Needing Help How do you tighten the canvas?

Post image
10 Upvotes

Have I been buying the wrong type of primary backing?

I stretch it tight and it does this .. from centre outwards ..

And where this is happening it's making tight lines go all the way up the canvas and it's making my gun ping all over the place 😭

Some tufters experience an issue where the needle hole plate falls out of the machine. In this step by step video we show you how to put it back easily.

This is our first in a new series of AK-V explainer video's.
If you have a specific repair topic you would like us to explain, share it in the comments.
