Discussion 🗣️ 3DS home brewing has been taken over by vibe-coders and I feel like i’m going insane!!

This is about one sub in particular, if anyone in this sub is familiar with 3DS modding, but I feel like i’ve gone INSANE. Suddenly, all these new ports and apps just started popping up, one after the other, and at first it seemed cool and like a huge step had been made, but then you realize almost ALL of them have vibe-coding involved SOMEWHERE in their project. It’s inescapable! Plus, everyone has seemed to go through a mass transformation, and they all seem to love and accept it with open arms! They don’t care about artistic integrity, they don’t care about the environmental impacts, they don’t care about the fact that this technology is slowly replacing every job it can, all they care about is being able to play Mario Kart Wii on a 3ds. JUST EMULATE IT ELSEWHERE FOR CHRISTS SAKE 😭 The 3DS has tons of games already, why are you SO desperate to play the fucking gamecube animal crossing when a better version ALREADY EXISTS on the 3DS?? Ugh!! It’s even made me question myself, cause people (even artists and coders!) just seem to dismiss it as “not SO bad” or it’s “Well, look at what’s been able to have been made thanks to AI! Why DONT you support it??” excuse after excuse! It’s so goddamn selfish, and anyone who is against it is shit on and are basically told to ”Get with the times! Just lay down and accept defeat!” Anyways, that’s all I have to say 😭

Slop Post 💩 "A project that would have taken X people A amount of time can now be done by Y people in B amount of time!"

"Developer with (X >= 11) years of experience here, I have never been more excited about software as I am now. Tasks that used to take me A hours now only takes B minutes" (no follow up or further explanation)

"Most people genuinely don't understand what is coming" (unlike them, a very smart person.)

"There are two types of developers, people who like coding and people who want to build solutions! You better hope you are in the second camp!" (fails to understand what their actual labor value is)

"I haven't touched my IDE in X months, I haven't written a line of code by hand in 9 years" (never explains what they are actually doing)

"I spent all weekend with the new FartBloop 6.7 model and man it's just crazy what I was able to get done" (never explains what they are actually doing)

"I manage a fleet of agents via orchestration it has totally changed how everything works at my job/company" (never explains what they are actually doing)

"I built a tool with Claude to track my AI usage limits" (no comment)

"I have multiple apps I built with AI that I make money from" (will never link or follow up with what these apps actually are)

...I have really got to log off.

AI Mistakes 🚨 Vibe Coding with generative AI is bad, yes even when just modding older games.

Title says it all, like its not magically ethical just because they are older games when all the same issues with AI are still present.

Just because older games are more difficult, or in some cases kinda impossible, to mod doesn't make it okay to use the slop machines on them. Is making mods like that sort of the purpose of AI especially when humans cannot mod the game properly anymore? Yes! Does that make AI ethical to use in this scenario? No, at least not currently. A tool fulfilling its purpose is not good when it has disastrous side effects such as everything already talked about regarding AI.

And if you're the kind of person who is "against ai" but then immediately caves and defends it when it does something you like, you have no standards. Until the issues with AI have been resolved, from the environmental impact from the data centers built for AI to the damage done to society broadly with how so many are using it to grift and steal from others and rely on it for thinking, and the catalogue of other issues, using it for its intended goal doesn't make it okay to use.

Like the purpose of a bomb is to blow up, it doesn't mean its a good thing if you started throwing them into crowds all because they fulfill their purpose.

I gotta avoid the totalwar subreddit now with how many chuds there are in there. If you wanna desecrate a game with the schizophrenic yes-man machine all because "its too hard" to code, "your" mods aren't worth anyone's time anyway.

TLDR: Just read the title again.

AI "Art" 🖼️ AI “art” is ruining kids Halloween events

I had to find somewhere to post about this. My kid is a wheelchair user and, therefore, we attend events & trunk or treats for Halloween instead of watching my kid sit on a sidewalk at a bunch houses that bc they have steps whiles I basically trick or treat so they get candy.

This means I have years of experience in going to events & trunk or treats. When the kiddo was really little used to hand out candy at trunk or treats as well and my husband repped his job at trunk or treats until
last year when he got a new job. He just reused all the stuff I had previously made.
One of the really fun things about events at the museum or events at community center or even trunk or treats has always been seeing people’s creativity. I personally have two bins of stuff to use for trunk or treats that I made 8-10 yrs ago and just kept them. I originally made a space theme, a Care Bears theme and an underwater theme & we’ve use the homemade elements & repurposed them for Trolls movie theme, Frozen movie theme & more.

This used to be the norm. All the cars used to have great home made themes that can be re used & encouraged the adults to dress up as well.

We’ve been to a couple trunk or treats now and another trick-or-treating event specifically made to be accessible. It’s all just AI “art”. It’s big plastic AI “drawn” sheets hung from your trunk. It’s big plastic AI “drawn” sheets put over a table. It’s big plastic AI sheets put on the walls. It’s just AI drawings that don’t make any sense and have no real purpose at a trunk or treat and you can’t play off of them to dress up & they’re not fun.

It makes something that used to feel magical & special into just people sitting in their cars with garbage behind them & no sense of enjoyment.
The vibe is off as well. When you take time to craft theme’s & plan a fun experience you’re an excited adult planning a way to bring joy & magic to Halloween. When you buy garbage on Amazon & tape it to your trunk you’re barely doing the bare minimum & you haven’t planned anything so your heart isn’t in it.

And that’s not even touching the environmental impact of the AI used & the disposable sheet that won’t last 8-10 yrs like the stuff I have in my basement has.

Environmental Impact 🌎 The energy demands of the AI buildout are insane. Data centres could use 15-20% of current US electricity demand by 2030.

Thumbnail takingstock.ai
53 Upvotes

US data centres already consume as much electricity as Britain. Data Centre’s share of US peak summer demand is projected to increase from 4.1% last year to 8.5% next year.

Next year US data centres will require 66GW of continuous draw, roughly equivalent to the electricity used by Germany in wintertime. Germany uses 24GW minimum load in summer.

They are projected to use 15-20% of current US electricity demand by 2030.

Goldman Sachs predicts the increase in power demand for data centres from 2023 to 2030 will be the equivalent of adding another top ten power consuming country.

Existing power plants are not enough to meet the need for electricity, so companies are turning to off grid gas power. Gas pipelines are being re-routed to data centres where they are fueling gas turbine generators. The backlog for gas turbines from GE Vernova is equivalent to the electricity use of Japan, the fifth largest consumer of electricity in the world.

They are also turning to nuclear power. Amazon, Google, Microsoft and Meta are all leasing multiple nuclear sites, each. Microsoft has arranged for three mile island (yes, that three mile island) to be reopened.

Morgan Stanley predicts the US will be short of electricity by six New York Cities by 2028 and 18 New York Cities by 2029.

Environmental Impact 🌎 Google’s Finnish Data Centre Expansion Sparks Environmental Controversy

Google’s planned AI data centres in northern Finland have triggered environmental concerns after an estimated 250,000 trees were cleared across 330 hectares near Muhos before the required environmental impact assessment was completed. Finnish authorities ordered preparatory work suspended at two sites, Muhos and Kajaani. Residents and conservationists have raised concerns about wildlife habitat destruction and muddy runoff entering nearby waterways. Google’s Finland country manager has apologised, while the company says it acted in good faith and plans to plant trees across 130 hectares at Muhos. The controversy highlights the environmental costs of expanding AI infrastructure. Although Finland attracts data centre investment through its cool climate and energy resources, responsible development requires environmental assessments and safeguards before major land clearance begins. The challenge is to advance AI technology without compromising forests, waterways and local communities.

AI Mistakes 🚨 Gotta love people trying to cover their AI use

Post image
633 Upvotes

Last update til i see anything new: I made a lil google doc with what recently happened, and some pointers to the matter. I'll be checking back when the game actually releases. I know I'm going a little haywire with it, but trying to hide it just pushes my buttons apparently.

Update Update: Apparently the developer has gone out of their way to remove "Sort the bunnies" from their previous developer page, and are now going under "Mr.Bunny" to avoid comparisons to their other games. I've went to Steam with my evidence.

Update: I couldn't access the Discussion Ban on Steam Mobile, but now I can show a screenshot of what I said! Since we've had people asking. The message in question!

Recently, I found out a game I was waiting for had been made by a "developer" who heavily uses AI. Apparently, they only disclose this fact after release, as many reviews have mentioned in their previous games. I try to do my justice and ask if they're going to disclose it in the discussions. Said "dev" the temp booted me from their discussions LOL.

I wish Steam had an option to report games that are hiding or not disclosing their AI use. Very scummy.

Not going to specifically say who here, but the screenshot has the name of said game, for your own research.

Big love for the anti AI movement <3

AI Writing ✍️ Sorry it took me a while to come around, but I can’t in good conscience continue to use AI.

My use of AI has primarily been as a critic for my writing. Despite not having it generate anything, I felt my voice being taken away.

And the more I spoke to other writers, they found the same problem.

And even outside of that I found my previous justifications to be self serving ignoring copyright issues, environmental damage, and even economical damage.

So yeah, you’ve got one more on your side. It took me too long to come around but I’m here nonetheless

Discussion 🗣️ Stop using grammar checkers

AI should not be used for auto-correct because grammar is an artistic choice that doesn't obey a fixed set of rules. For example, James Joyce's final chapter of Ulysses contains thousands of run-on sentences, and William Faulkner once wrote a 1,288 word sentence; meanwhile, Stephen King commonly wrote sentences without subjects or verbs.

It's not possible for AI to properly capture the intent of the author without potentially losing intentional choices because English is a vague language. As an example from The Hobbit,

"Good Morning!" said Bilbo, and he meant it. The sun was shining, and the grass was very green. But Gandalf looked at him from under long bushy eyebrows that stuck out further than the brim of his shady hat.

"What do you mean?" he said. "Do you wish me a good morning, or mean that it is a good morning whether I want it or not; or that you feel good this morning; or that it is a morning to be good on?"

"All of them at once," said Bilbo. "And a very fine morning for a pipe of tobacco out of doors, into the bargain.

English is an ambiguous language. AI cannot possibly capture the intent of the writer, because sometimes even the human readers aren't supposed to understand. Sometimes, the authors don't even have definitive answers.

Relying on auto-correct dampens the artistic expression involved with writing.

AI "Art" 🖼️ A sad story...

Thumbnail gallery
46 Upvotes

Approximatively 1h ago someone posted on several warhammer 40k reddits their project for a fan fiction in the golden age of 40k, something who would be inspired by Helldivers 2 but also the vikings and the roman empire...

But as you can guess he had the very poor idea to add to it... an AI generated video... (the first gif, just imagine a boring music over it, and you get the picture) and 40k's community is no really friendly to this kind of things.

Short story, everyone called him out for hit, commented with memes of "tech heresy" and the mods did delete his posts in oblivion...

But I was curious, I looked at the profile, I was expecting a 7 day old account who was made purely to do some sort of scam... but no! This guy was a genuine artist 3 years ago! He was using blender and was pretty good at drawing! All you see after the first GIF are genuine video he did with 3d models and by drawing by himself without AI! 3 years ago! Before all the ai bullshit! This guy didn’t need to use AI! He could have done everything by himself!

That’s so sad to see someone so talented fall into ai... I hate how unfaire the world is for people to give up on their talents and go for AI.
