Megathread - Pricing Pricing Megathread Weekly

This megathread is dedicated to "how much should I charge?" type questions. Any posts of this nature outside of this thread will be removed. Please provide enough information for others to help you. here are some examples of what you could provide:

- Post your example images for sale in the comments
- Post a visual commissions price list / potential offerings in the comments

More info to post:

- Product type: (eg. Commission)
- Target audience: (eg. Young people who like fantasy art)-
- Where you are based: (eg. USA)
- Where you intend to sell: (eg. Conventions in USA and online like VGEN)-
- How long it takes you to make: (eg: 10 hours)
- Cost of sales: (eg. £20 on paint per painting)

Is this a one off piece, something you will make multiple copies of, or something a client will make multiple copies of: (eg. The client is turning it into a t-shirt and they will print 50.)

Everyone else can then reply to your top level comment with their advice or estimates for pricing.

If you post a top level comment, please try to leave feedback on somebody else’s to help them as well. It's okay if you aren't 100% certain, any information you give is helpful.

This post was requested to be a part of the sub. If you have ideas for improvements that you would like to be made to the subreddit feel free to message the mods.

Mod approved post Images are disabled in posts

Hi everyone, we had to disable images in stand-alone posts because we were being flooded with "what do I price my art at?" and "is my art good enough to sell?" posts. It is difficult to give people advice on how to price their art, and many of the comments reflected that. They were very much self-promo as well, sometimes masked by "I sold my first painting" or some such. We just aren't the subreddit for that, historically.

Many of the other image posts were really good, like the art market set ups, but sadly we were just unable to moderate the flood of the pricing/pseudo-promo posts which were taking over our subreddit.

There is a megathread for pricing but people just don't seem to use it very often, or if they do, others do not comment. I am not sure what the solution is to this.

There is another subreddit, r/ArtistAlleyConnect , where you may post your market photos. For now we are keeping this subreddit discussion based only. You may still leave photos in the comments of course!

If anyone has a solution to this let me know!

- Management

Career [Education] Salary Database for Artists and Designers

Salaries in creative fields vary wildly, and a lot of people get lowballed because companies love to hide how much they pay and people don't know what to ask for... I wanted to help change that, so I pulled public Department of Labor salary data and organized it into a spreadsheet. Hope it helps some of you know your worth going into your next offer!

Advice [Marketing] What to post on a new art yt channel?

I have posted a couple speedpaints on yt shorts none of them more than 3 minutes long that have gotten a range of 100-1k views. I want to try different content, but idk what to do. I don't really want to do art opinions or drama, and I feel like I'm not good enough to do tutorials. I would rather not use my own voice in any videos. So, with these restrictions, what content can I make that will perform well. I thought fan-art speedpaints would do well since the characters I already have fandoms around them, but the fan-art speedpaint barely has 50 views. I'm willing to use a computer voice (Like Siri or the one in Google translate) but not an AI one if that makes sense

Any ideas?

Discussion [Discussion] 5x7 prints or cards?

hello, i've been selling cards for $6 each and sometimes people think they are prints. i also sell matted 8x10 prints for $40 and canvas prints for $80. my stuff is highly giftable, so people are mostly getting stuff for friends and family.

i am thinking of adding matted 5x7 prints for $20 each and not offering cards..or maybe keeping both, but will that be too confusing for customers?

if you've done cards and smaller prints, what has worked for you?

Advice [Suppliers] Vograce has yet to proof my order from 6 days ago, should I go ahead and message their support?

I am a small artist (mainly a hobbyist but I have sold works before) and I have used Vograce about 4 times now. In my experience, they’re normally pretty fast and get proofs and ship out items just about as soon as they can. I’ve overall had a great experience and that’s why I keep coming back.

I ordered 4 button pins and one acrylic pin in the same order (personal order) and I have yet to get the proofs. For reference I ordered it on the 21st. I know their website says that they don’t give proofs to orders under 5 items (it was 3 different designs), but I’ve always done small orders and have gotten a proof every time without asking for one.
Currently, my order is labeled as ‘manual design in progress’ making me think I will get a proof.

I ordered 2 acrylic charms today, after this last order, and got my proof literally within the hour. I’m a bit worried something happened to my order, so should I go ahead and email them or should I just wait it out?

Discussion [Recommendations] cost effective art shipment

Hello! I was wondering if anyone had recommendations on how to proceed shipping a large framed canvas piece of art (74″ × 50″ × 4″). I'm really hoping I can ship it from Washington State to NYC but I've never shipped framed art before and would love to hear what others have done. Thank you!

Web presence [Website] Builder Advice

Can someone help point me in the right direction for building a website for the first time? I don't need a ton of customizations, just a straight forward site to sell originals & prints. Preferably free if that's even a viable option. Would love to hear your experiences/opinions! TIA.

Advice [Discussion] Commissions?

Hello everyone, I hope this is the right place to ask for this. I’ve been doing art for a bit now and in order to help pay the bills, I thought about doing some commission work. The thing is, that I am very unsure if my art would be in any way considered at a level of quality where this would make sense. I’ve seen way more talented and amazing people struggle to fill their commission slots and I have little insight into how the whole concept and market around it works. I am afraid that I wouldn’t be able to deliver on what was promised or that I somehow mess up in the interaction with the customer. So I ask you, when is it appropriate to consider opening up commissions and do you have any advice or do you know any good resources for getting started with it, doing the pricing etc.? Thanks in advance!

Advice [Art Market] Best place to print?

Hi yall!! Im looking to get into selling at local art markets and im wondering where the best place to print prints, post cards, and stickers would be. I have been recommended sticker app and cat print, but they both seem a bit pricey. Im looking to start with a small batch of product then expand where i see fit. Ive looked into local print shops too, but i thought id ask here if there were good online print shops too. Thanks!

Discussion [Discussion] What does an art studio internship look like?

Hi all! I work at one of those paint-your-own-pottery places. Along with the typical resumes we receive, we've been getting some interest from high school students about internship opportunities.

We're a small business, so of course free labor sounds good. My only concern is that we can only give them menial tasks! I could personally share my (limited) knowledge, but my coworkers are not as well-versed in ceramics as I am. And even then, I am only proficient and not an expert by any means.

I have never done an internship, but I do know people who have had negative experiences with companies that take advantage of their free labor. I wouldn't want to do that to someone.

So I want to ask, what makes a studio internship worth it to you? Is it just something to put on your resume before going to college? Our operation here is extremely simple; think Color Me Mine. We won't be able to provide a true studio experience for an intern. I wouldn't want to bring someone on just to dust shelves and process our old clay, but if that is the expectation for an internship, maybe we should consider it?

Advice [discussion] What do you all do, if anything, to combat reposting on socmed?

I’m a pretty small artist (only a couple k followers!) so I haven’t had to really deal with this before now. Requesting the input of more experienced mostly-online artists, what do you do to combat reposting and what has been the most successful for you?

Do you add do not repost to all your art posts? A watermark?
Is it better to just ignore it?

I can’t help but feel worried especially w so many platforms feeding all photos into their ai models.

Thank you to all who take the time to respond!!!

Advice [art market] would you recommend Art Rider events in NY, CT, and NJ ?

i have heard mixed reviews about Art Rider events and i am interested in hearing from others. i am sure some of it has to do with location since they organize events in NY, CT, and NJ. for context, my medium is painting (and the people i met who have gone to art rider events did crafts.)

if you've attended or vended at one of their events, what do you think about their events? is it really a craft event or both fine art and crafts?

Web presence [Website] How to sell art online: Get the the art faster

If it takes someone 5 clicks to see an artwork, you've probbaly lost a customer.

I've sold more than 1,000 artworks online over the past eight years.

My one recommendation: get to the art faster

A lot of the dealers, artists and galleries I speak to, their websites takes 3-5 clicks before you see your first artwork, e.g.

Home > Artists > Individual Artist > Artwork

or

Home > Collections > Contemporary Art > Landscapes > Artwork

Think of your website like walking into a gallery. First time customers come to browse and see what catches their eye.

They don't necessary know what they are looking for.

The more decisions / work you make them do, they more likely they are to leave your website and never come back.

Your homepage is the most valuable space on your website. Use it to show your art.

I think of my homepage like Instagram - the goal is to get visitors scrolling and eventually they will find something that catches their eye, and then go deeper.

Advice [Recommendations] Thicker sticker paper/vinyl

The sticker papers I found only go up to 0,14mm and I would like the total paper to be a bit thicker. The thickness of only the sticky side doesn’t matter so much. I’m from Europe and so far I only found one brand but the shipping is too expensive. Any recommendations?

Product and Packaging [Shop Setup] Is it worth listing original pieces on Etsy or similar until my website is ready?

I was in the process of setting up my online shop but I recently had an issue with Instagram (which my current main source of traffic) that resulted in temporarily removing my website from my IG page.

Until I get this resolved, would Etsy or a similar website be a viable option as a stand in for a web store? Would it be unprofessional to use Etsy temporarily and then switch over when the time is right?

Any insight on your experience selling original works with them would be greatly appreciated!

Discussion [Discussion] Search: From Your Audience’s Perspective

Hi Everyone,

I recently attended an in-person market and had an interesting conversation about Style, Aesthetic and Search with another artist while there.

The bones of it were that if you (the artist) don’t know what your niche, style or genre / category is, how do you connect or communicate with people out there that are searching for work like yours? Or is it in your interest to even categorize yourself since it’s so subjective?

We talked about this theoretical Pinterest board that one might have and what it would be called if it contained our work.

We then discussed that aesthetics are mostly made up and seem to be the predominant way most people search for what they like. Or at least it’s maybe having a moment on the internet right now. I point out ‘mass-niche’ as something I’ve read about.

For the artists out there that don’t really perceive their own style? How would you best categorize it? How do you think your audience would genre your work? And how important do you think occupying an aesthetic or genre is overall to being discovered or growing your art audience?

I’m curious because I wonder about this a lot.

Thanks!
