Reddit, I need your help.

I’m the Communications Coordinator for One Simple Wish, a nonprofit founded by my mom. So, naturally, she is both my boss and my mother, which means I apparently cannot escape her challenges even at work.

For anyone who hasn't heard of us, One Simple Wish is a nonprofit that grants wishes for children and families impacted by foster care and crisis. Wishes range from everyday essentials like clothing and school supplies to more "extravagant" things that bring joy, comfort, and new opportunities. People can browse our website and directly grant a wish to someone who needs a little extra support.

She challenged me to see if I could clear half of our website’s wishes in 24 hours. If I can pull it off, I get to adopt a cat I’ve been eyeing at our local animal shelter. This cat was surrendered by her owner, who had her since she was a kitten, and I totally fell in love with her.

There are currently around 2,840 wishes on our site from children and families impacted by foster care and crisis. We're getting overwhelmed by the number of wishes coming in, and a lot of these requests are for everyday things that many people take for granted. Nearly half of the wishes are under $100.

My goal is to get that number down to around 1,420 wishes in 24 hours. That's half the site. Every wish granted gets us one step closer.

Before anyone assumes this is some random person on the internet asking for money: One Simple Wish is a real, registered 501(c)(3). We're an established organization; we're heavily audited annually, and you can absolutely look us up and do your own research before donating. We've even gone viral on Reddit a couple of times before!

The cat is obviously my personal motivation for trying to clear half the site on this particular date (I'm not going to pretend otherwise), but this is also about helping real kids and families get the things they've been waiting for, especially with the holidays coming up. If we can make a serious dent in the wishes currently waiting on our site, we can head into the holiday season with a fresh slate and more room to help the people who need us.

You don't have to donate a huge amount. If you browse the site and find a wish under $100 that you'd like to grant, that genuinely helps. You can grant a wish directly through our website, so you can see exactly what you're helping someone receive.
