Gear Porn I'm finally launching my Tree Table and all of the compatible accessories!! Please check it out and provide us some feedback!

Hey everyone! My name is Casey and I am launching Kimberlite next week on Kickstarter. Our flagship product is our Tree Table. It weighs 1 lb. and packs up just larger than a Nalgene. There are 3 configurations, the Tree Table, the Ground Table, and a standalone surface for on your lap or just flat on the ground (this works well on the beach especially).

The accessory ecosystem is the best part. All of the accessories lock directly into the table surface. Currently we have:

  • Table legs (for the ground table)
  • Stove canister attachment to lock in your camp stove and prevent spills. Works with both large and small canisters
  • Cutting boards
  • Fireproof windscreen
  • Elevates hooks (works well for hanging a light while cooking at night)
  • Table hooks to hang gear from

We have a bunch of new accessories in the hopper that will come out next year if we are successful with this launch!

You can also hang a ton of weight from the strap itself, which is where I usually hang my backpack. when I'm setting up camp.

I'd love any and all feedback. Like I mentioned, we are going live on Kickstarter next week Monday (November 24th). If we could be successful on Kickstarter, it would be lifechanging!

If you want to check us out, we are on all socials as KimberliteTech (not on reddit as a company yet)

Gear Porn Kalalau Trail Gear & Tips

1.4k Upvotes

The Kalalau Trail on the Na Pali coast of Kaua'i is one of the most beautiful (and treacherous) hikes in the world. 11 miles, up and down, through 5 valleys with 5k feet of elevation gain, terrifying 200-300 foot sea cliff exposure on the trail, and several microclimates land you on the pristine Kalalau beach. You will be humbled, surrounded by 4,000 foot cliffs formed by volcanic activity over five million years ago and shaped by the wettest spot on earth, Mount Waialeale directly above, the cliffs have been carved into their iconic fluted peaks by water that never stops falling.

E mālama i ka ʻāina. Care for the land. It is not ours. It never was. We are only passing through.

Here’s what I’d recommend for anyone willing to commit to this adventure:

• Go with someone you really like and trust, your company and their attitude can make or break this trip. 2 miles from the beach a group of 3 girls were turning back because they heard a thunderstorm was coming (it didn’t come).

• Prepare yourself mentally with the understanding that there are variables beyond your control — weather, mud, cliffs. This hike is terrifying at points, and takes much longer than you think.

• Prepare yourself physically with strength training & conditioning. Do not do this hike without training for it.

• Stay at least two nights, three if you can. You’ll want to explore the side hikes and give yourself plenty of time to rest & recover.

• If you’re not local, plan to stay at a hotel the night before and after your hike so you have plenty of time to prepare, rest, recover, and enjoy the beauty of Kaua'i.

• Bring trekking poles. Two of them. You will need them.

• Pack as light as possible. You don’t need cold layers, just changes of underwear, a swim suit, and the clothes you need for the day.

• Bring a water filter. There are plenty of fresh streams to fill from along the way and lessen your load in & out.

• Pack more food than you think. Snacks & big meals will keep you nourished.

• Pack a hammock or an ultralight chair for a comfortable place to relax.

• Take lots of pictures & videos because this is an unforgettable experience you will cherish for the rest of your life.

• Respect the land by packing out all rubbish and leave no trace. A thousand years of people loved this place before we ever set foot on it. You can feel that when you’re here. In the silence of the valley, in the way the cliffs hold the light at golden hour, and the rivers that fed entire communities for generations. Honor that.

Ultimately this was the trip of a lifetime and I would do it all again (maybe next year)!

Gear Porn What’s the stupidest piece of gear that you unreasonably love and cannot part with, I’ll go first:

Collapsable chopsticks. I mean why would I need titanium handled chopsticks with bamboo tines? Why is saving 4 inches meaningful? Why when they’re twice as heavy as normal chopsticks? I’ll tell you why. Because they’re silly and I love them. Picked them up in Japan many years ago and still use them whenever I can.

If you saw my post from the other week at an expo in Japan, this was quite different. Far fewer of the small brands with their local crafts and an insane amount of air frame tents. Every brand had at least one, many had multiple. There were also thicker air mattresses than my mattress at home. Metal manufacturing was also very prevalent with laser cut stainless goods just about everywhere. As always if there’s any questions I’m happy to answer them!

Weighs a total of 8.7kg so very happy with the weight. The latest addition is this new Durston Kakwa 55L backpack and it's amazing. Carries the load very well and shaves off a good 900 grams off my previous backpack.

Of course I can ditch a lot of luxury items like the helinox chair zero and Helinox round table to get that weight down, but it doesn't bother me as much.

I got the comfortable sea to Summit Ether light XR, a huge 2P Durston tent and a nice sleeping bag from Naturehike (CW400) which can open like a blanket or quilt. So a very comfortable setup.

For longer hikes I think I can shave off around 1,5-2kg and get that weight towards 7.5kg (without water and food of course). So again, very happy with how small everything packs and how much comfort these items give in return.

Gear Porn Telescoping Camp Light at Costco

Went to Costco yesterday and found this telescoping camp light for around $35. I had been using some USB powered light bulbs from Amazon which had been working great but I think I like this even more. I like that the head can be removed from the tripod so I can put it higher in a tree if needed. The remote is also nice so I can turn it off without bringing it down, although I will most likely lose it the first time I bring it camping.

Gear Porn New gear for first hike

Post image
621 Upvotes

Doing a short hike (3 hrs each way) to a nature camp ground this weekend to try out my new gear. I’ve done one night in the tent on the patio to check the pad and bag (not pictured).

Not pictured:

  • camp sandals

  • battery bank and drone

  • Nomad synthetic sleeping bag (9C but I’ll probably be comfortable to 6-7C)

  • Inside the Trangia are various soaps, toothpaste, earplugs, and a sponge

  • extra sports water bottle for easy drinking on the hike

Camp ground has clean water, and a fire pit. Will take dinner and breakfast, and trail snacks.

Gear Porn After loosing a second backpack to racoons and chipmunks, I now carry this gear hanger on every hike.

Raccoons and chipmunks have torn through our last bag! We hammock camp and have lost many zippers to chipmunks, lost food bags, had water bags chewed etc. We even lost an entire kids pack one night when a racoon dragged it out into a swamp. I was getting up at least once a night in the past to chase off raccoons.

Started using this line last year and haven't had a single issue since. I made it in 2 sections of 12' each that hook together. On a solo hike I bring the single length (3.8oz) and the double length (7oz) when I hike with the family.

We hang all our gear off this, water filter lives on the line, food bags, swimsuits, etc. On top of keeping the animals off our gear it really organizes the campsite. Everything is there off the dirt and easy to access.

It's 5/64 Amsteel (way stronger than needed) with Zing-It prussiks and the smallest rated carabiners I could find. The whole thing spools on a simple thing I 3D printed.

Sure it's extra weight, but we were loosing a lot of stuff and sleep to the animals
