🚨 Important, Please Read 🚨 Rules Refresher and Clarification

We are posting these here as Reddit rules have a fairly small character limit and we want to ensure that there is as little room for misunderstanding as possible!

Being civil: Please do not engage in condescending, rude, or aggressive behaviors. We can play nice even when disagreeing with someone. Please try to refrain from swearing too much on the sub. No personal attacks, harassment, or insulting others will be tolerated. You will receive one warning, then a temporary ban. If you violate this rule a third time you will be permanently banned. Mods are able to use their discretion on this if an individual's behavior may warrant immediate and potentially permanent banning or muting without a warning prior. Please don't make us have to resort to that.

If you have a complaint about a specific food/brand/etc., that is fine, but please stick to constructive criticisms.

Example: ✅️ I don't like this food for my cat/s because _________ VS. ❌ That food is trash. ✨️ Speaking to others this way will not make them want to engage with you or our sub. Please keep things informative. Yes, some foods will be better than others overall, or for some cats more than others, but please remember that fed is best and we need to feed the cat in front of us. ✨️

Everyone has different resources and access to different foods. Everyone's cat is different. Recommendations are great, suggesting that someone is taking poor care of their cat because they are doing their best is not. The only wrong diets are ones that are nutritionally incomplete, food that has gone bad, and food not meant for cats.

Please, no medical advice. Even if you are a licensed professional, it is not possible to diagnose someone's cat over Reddit. Broad guidelines are fine such as males being more prone to urinary blockages. However it is not okay to offer absolute advice for a specific cat, such as "your cat should be eating x amount of (specific) food x times a day".

If you are a veterinary professional or otherwise who believes someone needs medical advice, the best advice is for them to see a vet. You may bring up potential concerns and suggest they go see a vet, but do not diagnose these cats over Reddit.

No spam: This should be obvious, but additionally please do not bog down the sub with loads of "what should I feed my cat" posts. Please provide any relevant information with a post like this so that you can receive better advice and insights, such as your cat's age and if you've noticed any food preferences. Posting links with little to no context is also considered spam.

YouTube, TikTok, personal blogs, etc. are not reliable sources of information. Please refrain from using things like these as a source unless you can prove it was made by or cites a veterinary professional, however please try to use other ways of sourcing your information if able. Many people have advice online and can claim any amount of experience, make a profile that says they are certified without proof, etc.

And lastly, please remember that this is a place to discuss personal experiences. Please be respectful to anyone sharing their experiences with feeding their cat(s).

Thank you for taking the time to read this, I know it was long! Thank you for helping to keep our sub a helpful, informative, safe, and friendly place!

advice wanted! Having issues finding the right protein percentage

My old man went to the vet last week and was diagnosed with stage 2 kidney disease. She said what I've been feeding him is what she normally recommends, until a cat starts showing signs of kidney disease. So that's a plus I guess

Now she wants him on less than 30% fed as dry matter protein, but it must be wet food. I have looked at every single can in all of the good pet stores in my city and it's IMPOSSIBLE. I broadened my horizons and started bringing in foods I normally stay away from, but here's the fun part:

He's also allergic to poultry. No chicken, no turkey, no duck. So all the specialty food is out because they use chicken in everything.

I expanded the search even more to include what I consider junk food, and that's STILL too much protein.

This is a specialist vet who is extremely busy and charges $300 an hour. I have asked for help locating a food and she just doesn't have the time, and paying $300 for an appointment to discuss is absurd.

To recap:

<30% protein fed as dry matter (~8% crude protein, ~78% moisture)

Wet food only

No chicken, turkey, or duck

Help me obi-wan, you're my only hope

PS: why now of all times have pet food brands finally figured out that protein = good? Why NOW???

cat food and treat haul / shopping Finally Found Food She’ll Eat

Post image

Restock day!

Recently, my cat has been rejecting her kibble. I tried switching the kibble to different ones which would work temporarily but then she’ll eventually stop eating it. Which is odd since she has grown up eating dry food but there’s nothing wrong with her. Just her deciding to be picky apparently and really wanted to attempt to make me broke and stress me out. So I’ve had to switch her to pure wet because it was the only thing she wanted to eat, besides treats. She’d maybe have a few nibbles of the kibble but not enough to be healthy. She had started to lose weight because of how little she was eating. But now that she’s on wet, she’s doing much better and has started putting on weight thankfully.

These two are the winners out of the wet foods I’ve tried with her. Especially the Meow Mix, she loves it.

Picky cat

Are your cats picky eaters?

My cat mainly eats meat and other animal parts, but he also eats wet food sometimes.
Some days he prefers meat, other days wet food, and sometimes he doesn’t seem to want anything at all. The types of meat vary depending on what’s available, but it’s usually Baltic herring, chicken, beef, or pork. Sometimes I feed him just one type of meat, and other times I mix them together.

It’s a complete guessing game trying to figure out what he’ll eat on any given day. Right now, he’s going through another phase where nothing seems to appeal to him, and he’s eating only tiny amounts. Usually, he eventually starts eating when there’s nothing else on offer for a while, but it honestly makes me feel awful when he barely eats anything for days. 😣

He’s a neutered male, almost 3 years old, and he’s been like this since he was a teenager. He’s at a normal weight, although on the slim side, and otherwise very energetic and seems perfectly healthy.

Just used it to stock up on wet food for my kitties! The code is SAVE15 or SAVE20. Doesn't work on all brands but I was able to use it for TikiCat and O.M.G. canned food.

Hope it's okay to post here, if not just let me know and I'll delete!

cat favorites The snack bag always gives it away

He can be fast asleep on the couch, but the second a snack bag rustles in the kitchen, he’s right there. Apparently, the ears work perfectly when food is involved.

advice wanted! food switch advice

i recently took in my friend’s 13 year old cat who i lived with in university. he’s always been super food motivated and has only ever eaten kibble because wet food tended to upset his tummy.

as he’s gotten older, his teeth have become worse and he’s not able to eat hard kibble like he used to. in the last week, he’s been switched over to wet food. unfortunately, he doesn’t seem interested in the slightest. he still has kibble out and we’ve tried mixing that with water but it doesn’t appeal to him. i’ve given him the churu tubes and he goes to town on those, so i know he’s interested in eating. im not sure if there’s something i can do to entice him to eat the new wet food?

i should also mention, i’ve noticed he mainly licks the wet food rather than going in for bites, so he can’t get the little pieces of food. not sure if there’s a food that would be helpful for this?

if anyone has any advice on cats being picky / how to transition them off the one food they’ve eaten forever, i would appreciate it!! anything helps :) thank you!

advice wanted! Any recommendations for dry food that helped with Scarf and Barf? Allergies?

Hi guys! I’m having issues with my 1-year-old cat throwing up his dry food shortly after he eats it. He had this issue when he was younger and he was on Hills Science Kitten so I switched him to sensitive stomach Kitten and the throwing up stopped.
He’s now been on Hills Science Adult Sensitive stomach for a few months and was fine until recently. Hes been throwing up much more the past month. It’s always full chunks of kibble and some that have been chewed. He’s fine with his wet food, no issues there.

I asked the vet about it when he was a kitten and she put him on the Hills Science Vet Sensitive option both dry and wet and he wouldn’t touch that. He is a very picky eater even now. I finally got him on wet food that he actually eats.

I’ve read some people on here who have very similar stories and their cat has IBS but before we go that route I thought I might try to change his food again. I don’t know if it’s a food sensitivity or simply just eating too fast. I just don’t understand what would trigger it on and off over the course of a year.

I have his automatic feeder set to the smallest portion which is 10g only 3 times a day. I almost think the bigger kibble is worse because even if it’s small amounts he inhales it.

All this to say, does anyone have recommendations of dry food that has been in this situation?
I’m thinking about trying a grain-free dry food since he’s only ever been on Hills Science and even the sensitive stomach has grains and corn. If anyone has recommendations here as well I’m all ears.

Noticed a clump in a can yesterday and threw it out. Noticed again today at the end of the day. Could just be whatever the black parts are but it got clumped? Or is it spoilage?

venting - advice wanted Instinct PATE 5.5oz can DENTS in when checked bottom by the push check please read to fully understand

Hi I get really bad anxiety with my cats I always get worried about giving them food that could have an issue and them getting sick. Especially after what occurred when they were eating SMALLS ((long story.)) but the fact of how sick they got & how many others cats did too…basically traumatized me I thought I was losing them :( I’m trying to add a pic or video I hope I did it right..please help-

I have a question… I know that if a cat wet canned food is bulging or if when you click the top and it pops/clicks it’s a No go. Don’t give..But I am assuming it’s the same if the bottom does it right? Meaning-

1- if the I check the bottom and push slightly and it starts to make the top of the can click click pop pop

2- if when checking the bottom, slight push and it literally INDENTS and is like SOFT upon slight push.

I also did notice that one of the cans felt idk how to explain it but DIFFERENT as if it was “fatter” or “puffier “ but it was NOT click click pop pop at the top, my anxiety had me check the bottom bc before it’s caused the top to click/ pop. This time nothing occured to the top but the bottom caved in and was SO EASY to almost soft like.

Purina One dry food suddenly smells different

Has there been a recipe change? New bags of the sensitive skin and stomach line smells like rodent feed (not waste, it doesn’t stink, it literally smells just like I’m opening a bag of hamster food). They mostly eat the purina urinary health wet food but I mix it with the dry they like to encourage them. The smell is putting me off so much I might just stop using the dry entirely. Has anyone else noticed it?

advice wanted! 2 cats, need a dry for both

I’ve been looking through and not seeing many close… so I apologize for the annoying question! 🤣

I have a 14yo gal, about small and round, but not inactive, 12lbs and the vet wouldn’t mind if she lost weight. She gets hot spots. She has been on Farmina Herring for 2 years now.

New addition is a big, lean 3yo orange boy. Food motivated, spent time outside with scars to prove it before I adopted him. He is 15.5lbs and vet likes his weight for his body. Currently eating Purina Cat Chow Complete Chicken.

Girl had some of his dry and threw it up fast.

Girl and boy both do not like Tiki Born Carnivore High Protein Herring & Salmon, him more than her. He left it in a bowl for hours and was hungry!

Seems like her hot spots are chicken related, so I skip chicken as much as possible (only her treats have some).

They will both being getting fish pate for dinner daily and she will continue to have all the Temptations treats she wants 😭

Ideas for a shared dry food for them?

labels, packaging, etc. Does this feeding guideline seem WAY over? I know alot are inflated but this one seems massive to me

3*80=240. The average 9lb cat is recommended ~190kcals. Am I missing something? Maybe this is the guideline for a nonfixed cat? I'm looking at budget foods rn randomly. Bored while having to pause packing for the laundry

What are wet foods that you would recommend for a picky cat?

Texture and flavor do not matter as she will not eat any type of wet food. I am trying to find the healthiest option while also satisfying her..

What are safe ways to serve pumpkin to cats? I’m carving pumpkins tonight and I was thinking about saving some of the bits for my cat and my aunt’s cats. How should I prepare it and what parts should I use?

Chicken free catnip treats?

My cat was recently diagnosed with an official chicken allergy, ive been keeping him away from chicken and chicken by products but the treats are so hard to find without chicken AND he likes them.

He only likes the catnip temptations treats but they contain chicken by product. I would get rid of treats and just use kibble but he refuses any treats besides the catnip ones. His favorite form of play is getting the treats out of cat puzzles and i really dont want to take that away from him.

Hes also on prednisolone (i think) to help stop his itching from presumably the chicken, but i cant get him to drink it. Is there any tricks anyone has besides forcing it in his mouth? I tried making him "catnip soup" (which he loves) and put the meds in there. He wont drink it :/

labels, packaging, etc. Am I misreading the instructions?

Post image
3 Upvotes

I bought some cat food from a company called Jinx because a friend of mine swears by the brand. When reading the feeding instructions for the box it explains that I need to feed 1/2 can per 1lb of body weight. Keep in mind these are slightly over 4 ounces a can so basically 2 ounces of food per 1lb is what I am understanding. Here’s a photo of the back of the box, the directions are also printed the same on the individual cans. Maybe anyone else has experienced this or has a reference photo with the right portions?

My neurotic cat was codependent on his bonded brother who fell off of my balcony 3 years ago due to my roommate being careless

He was diagnosed with FIC due to me bringing in another cat to try to help and my dumbass didnt think enough about intact males not gettung along and it caused him to develop FIC. im a shitty owner, i know. My lifes been wild since the last loved one I had alive went to jail so ive been pleasure seeking and ruining my life. I took in a cute stray thinking it woukd help and had to rehome due to my main cats stress

Hes on hills c/d and looks DISGUSTED when i try to feed it to him. He ate it a few days ago now he hates it. I make 26k a year i cant afford purina pro plan. Can I give him regular sweet kitty dry food alongside the wet?? I dont want him to starve. Im at my wits end atp
