Advice Cat lets roommates pet him, but only when I'm not around?

• Upvotes

I have a beautiful, handsome ragamuffin named Chester that I adopted from a somewhat sad Harry Potter-esque background about 5-6 years ago.

He's always been shy with strangers but gotten better as time has gone on. I have one roommate in particular that really wants to be closer with him, but he always meows at her like he wants pets, then leaves when she actually tries to pet him.

In the past, he's only been super chill with people that he's seen me cuddling, so mainly my ex-girlfriend or girls I was dating, whom he tended to warm up to quickly after they slept in my (and Chester's) bed.

This wouldn't be a problem if he wasn't also quite demanding of my attention, which can sometimes be a bit bothersome, and I'd also love to see him get more love and attention from all the folks that wanna rub his belly so bad. He could have so many friends and so much love if he wasn't so dang shy.

What makes it weird is that he's allegedly only like this when I'm around. When I'm not around, according to my roommates, he lets them pet him and rub his belly and give him love, but I've almost never seen this when I'm around without me simultaneously having a hand on him to keep him relaxed, in which case he'll let whoever wants to pet him pet him, but only as long as I have contact with him or am right next to him.

I would love for him to be more comfortable getting attention from more people, cause everyone loves him so dang much, but it sounds like his behavior changes significantly when I come around. Specifically, he becomes much more vocal and only starts letting me pet him.

For context, six months ago I stopped working from home after working remotely for four and a half years full time, and another cat entered the picture (who usually is in a separate room, cause she's kind of a bitch, but also cute) about two years ago.

I'm mainly curious about any known causes of this behavior? It's not exactly problematic, particularly given that he's apparently chill with way more people when I'm not home, but I'd love for him to be more comfortable getting attention from all his friends.

Mourning/Loss Tribute to my beloved Pampita

Hello, I don't know where to start, today, October 26, I found out that my cat had died and I don't know how to feel about it.

I had found out from my grandparents, it turns out that a lady accidentally landed on a pallet and accidentally ended up falling on my cat, I don't want to give details but unfortunately she didn't die instantly, they had to take her to a vet and nothing could be done about it so they had to put her to sleep, the worst part of all is that the poor cat was crawling around with broken bones and that woman just left.

I don't want to give too many details about my private life, but I've known that cat for as long as I can remember. She was never aggressive. In fact, I don't even remember her ever scratching me or biting me. She loved to be petted and pampered. She always asked people to pet her and she never had enough.

I love you Pampita, if I had the opportunity I would like to be able to pet your head one more time.

Advice Kitten sitting

I am watching a kitten for someone. This cat is so sweet and fun, and he likes me. The arrangement is indefinite because it involves a housing situation. How do I avoid getting too attached?

Medical Questions Eye dilation & inner lid difference

Got a barn kitty (Nikita, M, roughly 1y)

Has had an upper respiratory infection or something - did two rounds of antibiotics and seemed to get better, but still has random booger episodes. Been like this for three months, then suddenly having an eye issue the other day.

Pic #1 = Friday 9am. Was working from home and looked over at him and his eyes were CRAZY looking. Few hours later, his inner lid of his right eye started poking out a bit.

Pic #2 = Monday lunchtime. He looks sadder than he actually is in this photo, still playful and responsive. But obviously still having some kind of issue.

Post-Vet breakdown:

Friday - doped up on gabapentin to help cooperate with eye stain and pressure test. Numbers OK, no obvious damage or foreign contaminant. Gave us prednisone eyedrops for his eye, told us to apply twice a day for five days and await results. R eyelid still poking out. High as shit, slept in a strange position all night.

Saturday - high as a kite all day. Sat in the same spot, same position. No water, no food, diarrhea (in litter box, never forgot how to get there). R eyelid still poking out.

Sunday - little more active. Jumping to his window perch, jumping to the bed, confirming no signs of muscle issues. Starting to shoot up more mucus than previous days had half his portion of daily food. R eyelid still poking out.

Monday - much more social. Giving me headbutts for affection for the first time since Friday. Ate his entire AM portion of wet food and some of his kibble. Playful for a while, lazy now. R eyelid still poking out.

The boogers have been an issue since day 1, and now the eye is happening. Wondering if they’re linked, wondering if they’re separate, wondering if anybody else has ever experienced this.

What do you think? Advice? Experience? Suggestions?

My very first pet at 30. I’m completely in love with him and will do just about anything to get him happy and healthy.

he's a sweet boy, zero medical issues and very active (even though he has a huge body mass as my sister likes to say). he just kinda chooses to stretch out completely instead of a loaf like our girls do 😭 it's so cute but i genuinely have no idea why he does it. i know it's not bad or anything but it's odd since our girls have never done this.

Had to put my sweet girl out of her misery today. She had a stomach blockage, pancreatitis, and various other ailments. She couldn’t keep food down and was so, so weak.

I just hope I did the right thing. I hope she knew how much I loved her. Goodbye Mona.

Advice How to brush a cat who hates to be brushed?

• Upvotes

I have a half Maine Coon long hair and she HATES being groomed. She will sometimes let me brush her back for a minute or two but if I try to go anywhere near her tummy or backside she nips at me and grabs at me and runs away. She has matting on her belly because of it and I know it cannot be comfortable. She has been like this since she was a kitten before she had any matting so I know that’s not the full reason she won’t let me brush her. Does anyone have any tips for getting her to tolerate grooming? She also will not let me clip her claws.

After my soulcat died 2 years ago I adopted these cute little stinky buds from the shelter 5 weeks ago. And finally one of them (Professor Stanislaus) loves to cuddle and sleeps on my chest SO much 🥹 The other one (Monsieur Pantaloon) is getting cuddlier aswell but still needs more time (which is okay)
