Modpost Non-Insect Food Options- What are your favorites?

Hi all!

We see the topic of non-insect options for food come up a lot, so we have put together a list of the common ones we see, and our favorites. Would love to hear from the community on what you're using and why! (List will be updated and moved to our r/centipedes wiki once complete)

Reptilinks:

Mash

We call this mash, but it's just baby food & reptivite. Specifically, the gerber baby 2nd step chicken and gravy baby food. Reptivite is optional and not needed for every single feeding.

Grain free, wet cat food:

DIY whole prey:

  • Boiled chicken with no additives. Can be added to food processor with just enough water to process into a "slop"
  • Chicken parts (gizzards, hearts) Can be added to food processor with just enough water to process into a "slop" (Note: Organ meats do not necessarily need to be cooked but please be careful with raw meats and practice good sanitation of surfaces!)
  • Frog legs, meat fileted off the bone (We find that a lot of local asian markets have great prices on these, and occassionally they show up in frozen sections at other grocery stores as well in the US!)
  • Smelts, occassional raw or boiled quail egg (depends on the source) ty u/plantsnbugs23

If you don't have a large number of pedes, storing these non-insect prey items in the freezer may be a good option.

Small ice cube trays like this may work for safely storing excess mash/whole prey and allow for more dietary variation since you won't have to worry about finishing the container before moving on to the next type.

We obviously still recommend variety of prey, but especially during months where feeders can be difficult to source, or in case of emergency, shelf stable food options may be a great back up.

Note: always check local for best prices! And if you have links for other countries please send them so we can build out a more complete list!

ty u/wellingtonexotics for help compiling all this info with me c: More to come!!!

question Pedeling care

Hi, to those who have raised small pedelings (around 1-2” or so) to adulthood what was your husbandry for them? I am looking to start keeping centipedes but a lot of the options i have are small 1-1.5” pedelings and I have seen people saying that taking care of them is a little more difficult than adults. For the species of centipede I am mainly looking at Scolopendra dehaani and galapagoensis.

I have quite a few of these around since I live in a house. My cat usually doesn't bother them much, but today I noticed her watching this one and gently poking it with her paw.

So I offered it my hand and let it hang out with me for a while :)

It mostly crawled around slowly or just sat calmly on my arm. I didn't notice any visible injuries.

I spent some time admiring it from all sides, took a few photos, and then let it go.

Absolutely gorgeous creatures!

Qualsiasi esperienza diretta sarebbe molto apprezzata. Grazie!

question Centipede enclosure

Hi! Does anyone have any tips for centipede enclosures? I'd love to have something pretty for my girls once they're all grown up. I love the new centi cribs concept, but I am in Europe. I would prefer acryllic as I want to make sure there's enough ventilation. Does anyone have any suggestions for Europe? I know about arachnosys but if I'm honest I feel the price is a little bit unreasonable. I'm even thinking, should I just get a custom enclosure, or make my own? I just feel like plastic boxes aren't doing them and their homes justice lol. Thanks!!

question Breeding house centipedes?

Basically explained by the title, how would I go about breeding house centipedes. I've bred isopods, millipedes, and other such bugs but wanted to see if there were specifics anyone might know on house centipedes.

They will be pets and pest control. Yes I am aware they are unconventional but my partner adores them and they do a good job. I will be feeding them when seen once the pests I want gone are gone. They will not be left to fend for nothing.

Im wanting to actively breed them not passively as I'm sure a few are passively breeding in the basement. What kind of enclosures would these guys like? 20 gal with lots of clutter? So they lay eggs or live birth? Any info that'd help me with my goal would be appreciated. I have access to enough adults to start a colony.

question Centipede vivarium

My mint leg is outgrowing its small enclosure and I want to make it a vivarium with plants in it. Would it be a good idea to silicone the mesh layer between the dirt and the drainage layer to the glass in case it gets down there?

Has anyone kept Cormocephalus nitidus? I’m thinking of buying an N3 and would love some advice on its care, especially enclosure size, humidity and substrate. Any firsthand experience would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

question temporary house centipede food and enclosure?

hi! i recently found a house centipede in my dorm and decided to keep him since it's getting very cold where I live and house centipedes are so cool.

i couldn't just let him be free since my roommates would kill me for that but I also don't currently have a great way to keep him since I have no car. I am planning on getting proper food and an enclosure on Friday, but currently have him in a small maybe 1 gallon container with plenty of air flow, some dirt, and moist leaves. I was wondering if that is okay or if there is a better way to keep him safe until Friday.

I know house centipedes can survive for a while without food but I am still worried about that. I haven't found any live bugs in my house to feed him yet, is there any human food I could give him? additionally, any advice on how to improve his temporary home? my apartment is at about 70 degrees and quite moist and I have been adding moist leaves to the enclosure to make sure it is wet enough.

any advice is appreciated πŸ™ I was very unprepared for him but don't want him to just die since I've always wanted a centipede.

thanks so much. his name is bugmeister btw.

question Is my centipede ok?

I put centipedes in a big outdoor bin with dirt and logs, lots of bugs, sometimes veggie scraps. I made a terrarium and found this big guy in there and added him. I hadn't seen him for a month or so till today and he's kind of like hugging the dirt. Is this normal or is he maybe sick?
