Promoting My Own Content A little MLS history from a fellow 1998 expansion team — Miami Before Messi
Hey Fire fans!
Hope this is okay to share here (mods, please delete if not allowed).
I recently published my first book, Miami Before Messi: A South Florida Soccer Tale, which tells the story of the Miami Fusion and their four wild seasons in Major League Soccer from 1998–2001.
I thought this group might appreciate it because Chicago and Miami entered MLS together in 1998, but obviously went on to have very different histories. While the Fire won the double in their inaugural season and built a lasting legacy, the Fusion eventually found their footing, won the 2001 Supporters' Shield, and then disappeared altogether.
The book is built around interviews with former players, coaches, front office staff, supporters, and owner Ken Horowitz. My goal was to preserve a piece of early MLS history that I felt deserved to be remembered.
I've really enjoyed revisiting that era of American soccer through this project, and I figured some longtime Fire supporters might appreciate the nostalgia.
If anyone is interested, the book is available on Amazon. Happy to share a link!
And I'd genuinely love to hear from anyone who remembers those early Fire–Fusion matchups. What stands out to you about that era of MLS?
