Discussion I don't like Claire

I am fine with her being trans. I don't care about that. I just don't like her as a person.

She killed several people in the race and got mad that someone killed her husband in the race in the same way she killed everyone else, and wanted to kill him away from the race.

And even if we tell her winning the race is the only important thing she still gets mad for not going after Sampson.

And also the quest is broken, like I am much stronger and she is ganic and I cannot physically stop her from shooting Sampson and the only way to get her to stop shooting Sampson is to say you won't help her with that way earlier when she only told her side of the story, and later on you learn the other side and want to change your opinion the game won't let you.

This is why I hate Claire and I posted this earlier and got temp banned for "transphobia". Now the subreddit is at war, I am expecting a new sub to be created with better moderation. I think it is okay to like or not like Claire and it is just bad to ban all discussions about a character because they are trans.

Discussion Claire is one of my favourite characters in the game - no I will not explain to you why.

Post image

I’ve noticed this bizarre trend on pretty much every comment saying Claire is one of their favourite characters you get someone barge in with “Whyyyyyyyyy? Explain! She’s sooooooo unlikeable”. - demanding an explanation as to why you’d like the character or think she’s cool. Very strange like there’s just users waiting in the wings to demand explanations as to why you like a character 😂. In fact they’re being so aggressive with it, it sort of makes you think there might be a little more to it than they just think she’s unlikeable…

Like Lucy initially is a frosty customer in edgerunners but I’ve never seen anyone demand to know why someone likes the character on here, mad.

Discussion I actually dislike Claire as a character after her last mission.

Let me start with the fact I didn't even know she was trans till swarm of the posts on here about it. So I chose not to kill the guy that allegedly murdered her husband because I felt like that might have not been the case and she is just being emotional and not thinking straight. I just finished the race instead and the way she acts after just completely ruins her for me, which is a shame because I liked her all the way till that point. Am I the only one that feels this way?

Discussion About to do Claire's questline because of the drama

Post image

I didn't even do it when she first asked me to because I thought racing in this game would be pretty lame, but now I'm definitely gonna do it cus of all this transphobia. Also, for any cyberpunk "fans" that are transphobes, there's a certain quickhack I think you should use on yourself :) not sorry.

Claire is an icon, and posts celebrating her are encouraged

We fucked up, and as head mod, I fucked up. I take responsibility for everything posted by the mod team.

I can also say that nothing is changing around Claire. I’ve made it clear that our mandate is dictated by you, and that anything which deviates from that mission will not be tolerated.

The previous sticky was a reactionary post, and a misguided attempt to save people from transphobia. The thinking was, if we don’t allow those posts there won’t be any transphobia.

That’s a bullshit perspective.

Our job is to make sure that shit doesn’t reach you, while also facilitating discussion. Any mod who isn’t willing to put in the work removing those comments doesn’t deserve to be on the team.

I take full responsibility for this, I should have caught it before it became an issue.

I take great pride in how inclusive this community is, and I feel honoured that I get to help nurture it. I hope this community continues to be a safe space for trans folk in particular - because the internet can be very cruel to you. It is my one hope that you feel accepted and safe here, and the idea you felt betrayed by this community devastates me.

It won’t happen again

Edit: I didn’t want to go into mod drama but there are a lot of calls for us to take decisive action. I want to make it clear that the mod who initiated this has been suspended, while I deal with this problem. We will make a decision on their future in the coming days, and our direction will be influenced by the feedback in this post

Discussion I don't like Claire

• Upvotes

First time I came across Claire in the Afterlife, I thought she was awesome. Super chill character, sparkly personality, chatty.

Claire does really make V feel welcome (especially considering that at that point in the story, V is a small fish in a big ocean) and she's also respectful of Jackie's demise.

Then you discover that she's into street racing, and that opens a whole new world. You lost someone, she lost someone, and you take it out together by racing other gonks in dangerous death races through town. Great!

Then it all hits the crapper when you realize that she doesn't give two shits about you or the race. She just wants to kill someone as revenge... Ok, sure. Why not talk with Rogue or one of the dozens of guns for hire who are more than likely on great terms with her? She's a bartender in the Afterlife, and her demeanor indicates the power and respect she has there.

Nope, she wants to mess up V for her own selfish purposes, and reacts in such a shit way when confronted. Yeah, she lost her husband and that sucks, but it's basically revealed at the end of her quest that she only "likes" V as long as V blindly does her bidding. What a B.

Ironically, you can also do this throughout the game, using characters to further your own selfish plans for revenge. Yeah, you can also be a B. Food for thought, although I tend to roleplay my V's as "good" (as much as possible) guys/gals.

So, yeah, the reason I dislike her is because she's set up in such a great and cool way, perfectly fitting into Cyberpunk, and then gives you a metaphorical kick in the balls when you don't go with her brain-dead plan. She's a good character that fits the world, I just dislike her in the end because it felt like being betrayed by a close friend.

Meta Heckler's veto and Claire - You're doing the rule breakers work for them

What is a heckler's veto? A reddit forum is not the government and the first amendment does not apply but this is the definition from the ACLU when the government does it.

"When someone exercises their First Amendment right to free speech, the government is not allowed to shut down the speech just because other people don’t like the message that is being conveyed. This is known as the rule against a “heckler’s veto.”

https://firstamendment.mtsu.edu/article/hecklers-veto/ "A heckler’s veto occurs when the government accepts restrictions on speech because of the anticipated or actual reactions of opponents of the speech. Heckler's vetoes have been typically struck down by the Court."

As I said, none of this applies to forum moderators. You are not the government and we are free to post elsewhere but *is* a question of fairness and the general principle. The impact of banning all discussions of Claire a character from Cyberpunk 2077 because some users are transphobic hecklers is itself transphobic. You are doing the work for them.

Claire belongs in the game and transgender people belong in the fandom. Regardless of the rules you are not being fair and you are not creating a space where people are welcome irrespective of protected identities. That's wrong.

Discussion About Claire specifically: As a transgender person Claire comes off as a massive hypocrite and I can explain why.

Generally V is characterized as someone that really doesn't care about morals consistently unless it's related to children and they put everyone at an arm's length, even Jackie didn't ever say V's real name once in the story despite the fact they lived together, And V never has an option to kill Wakako despite killing multiple innocent people and selling women into slavery. So I can believe V wouldn't really care about being lied to if the Job paid well.

My issue with Claire comes down to having a generational crashout if you go thru with the race, when up untill the last bit she never said "Yeah, I want to kill this guy because he killed my Husband." She explicitly hid that from the player, and then if V, who only got paid for the race, decides to go with the job She contracted, she has a legitimate mental breakdown and screams at you for not killing the guy she hates.

The main issue other than her behavior is, primarily, she kills other racers during the race itself. She doesn't care that V can cause people to crash into walls and explode, she doesn't ever say "hey, don't kill them!" she specifically even if they aren't shooting at you, shoot at other racers and attempt to kill them during the death race. So, realistically, why should I as the player and as V (even if they don't really give a shit) have any actual emotional stakes in her husband dying other than "Please pay me for the Job I was hired to do."

that's basically it. Please keep the energy you have towards claire in your day to day life. Go out protesting, help your neighbors out. Contribute to your community, make LGBTQ friends. Don't just virtue signal, if you feel strongly about the mods here for being transphobic, defend other transgender people online and in real life as well. And don't be afraid to critizise other transgender people either, we aren't perfect. just treat us as any other person.

edit: making death threats in my dms yet again and downvoting my posts won't stop me from being who I am looool

Love A Cyberpunk sub with mods being against trans representation is crazy

Post image
7.6k Upvotes

I am trans myself, and i loved the entirely of Claire's campaign in the game and how much of a deep and complex character she is, and how enjoyable and nice she is as a person, it makes me very happy when media treats queer representation as something that shouldn't be shoved up with stereotypes and only made as a tiny little side of its content.

If yall actually played the game, watched the animes and comprehends the entirely of the punk culture, how the fuck do you decide that the best way to erradicate transphobia is by completely erasing trans representation and recognizition instead of being loud and annoying about those who shares hatred over this community???

If you really value the community of the game you supposedly understood very well, you are probably aware that you're doing this moderation job for free and there will always have more people on the waiting line that should be happy to moderate this place aswell.

If that somehow ever came into a consensus through the whole mod team, yall should do something else in your free time and let other people that actually understood the Cyberpunk universe and its critiques be moderators, and not you.

Love I do actually want to celebrate about Claire as a trans woman

I know people have already moved on, I just wanted to say first as a trans woman that it has actually been such a joy seeing the community rally against what is unfortunately a very common experience. I.e. people with power deciding that trans people's existence is too "controversial", so trans people are pushed out of sight to allow bigots to exist in spaces quietly. It is admittedly a very low stakes version of something that happens way too often nowadays. The increasing attacks of trans people's rights in the world today is very scary to see. And then on the smaller scale so many fandoms I'm a part of have been co-opted by absolute losers whining about "wokeness", or that any LGBT inclusion in media is "shoved down their throat" just because a gay or trans person dared to exist as a missable side character. "They put pronouns in [blank]" type shit.

I remember the backlash from some people when the game first launched. People downloaded mods to remove the trans flag from the Beast. You know, loser behaviour. So years later seeing the support from the community after the mods decision, then enough to get it reversed, changed what would have a very disheartening situation that implicitly supports transphobia, to a very nice moment of community solidarity that rejects transphobia.

So I wanted to talk about Claire and this is the main purpose of the post...

I do really like her. I think she's cool from her first convo. Mostly because I didn't expect the "Afterlife bartender character" actually have a character. Its really sweet that we can get her to add Jackie's drink to the menu. She introduces us to the racing side missions which I've always thought was a fun change of pace. But I've also always liked Claire as trans representation.

Design-wise I find her to be a very realistic, unfetishised, and honest and respectful depiction of a trans woman. She's a bit tall, her shoulders are a bit broad, but that's never used to undermine her womanhood. She's even a bit older (she always read to me as early 40s, maybe late 30s at the youngest) when most trans rep are early 20s or younger. The devs didnt make a ciswoman and then stapled "trans woman" onto her as a retcon, nor is she hyperfemme practically a femboy, nor is she the transphobic stereotype of "a man in a wig". To me, she looks like a realistic, honest and respectful image of a trans woman thats fairly achievable even today. Claire is also not the "perfect minority" character that is so common when trying to make "good representation". She is allowed to have flaws, she lies and manipulates V into committing murder, she is driven by revenge, and she fucking *hates* you if you dont help her get that revenge. Claire is a mechanic. Machanic is often stereotyped as being a "manly profession". And yet the game never presents it that way, nor is it ever used to invalidate her womanhood. Claire's story is not focused on her facing transphobia, nor some overdone coming out story. In fact, Claire doesnt face any transphobia in the story. V doesnt even react or comment at all, and I love that. She is allowed to just exist, as a woman, as a trans person, with more important things going on in her life. For me thats so refreshing to see (and why banning posts about her was so tone deaf imo).

Honestly my biggest complaint is the line "he knew me before my gender transition" is very clunky and awkward and very on the nose.

That's ultimately why I like her so much (which I am 100% allowed to express that opinion and nit have it removed). Plenty of people don't like her. They find the fact that she lies and manipulates V too unlikeable, or they dont like her writing, or don't like The Beast as a reward etc (which they are 100% allowed to express that opinion and not have it removed). But then there are some absolute loser gonks who hate her because they get triggered and cry everytime they are reminded that trans people exist. Those people should be rightfully reported and have their posts removed because their transphobic loser behaviour does not belong in this community.

But you know who does belong?

Claire Russell. Bartender of the Afterlife. Mechanic. Racer. Manipulative liar who tricks V into helping her kill Samson and avenge her dead husband. Who is also a trans woman.

So the transphobes can keep crying and whining. And I'm gonna keep on reporting them. Because none of their whining will change the fact that there are, in fact, pronouns in the videogame.

All characters, all missions, all weird little niche spots in the world should be posted, regardless of the hideous tyrants who have been given mod powers.

Mods, you are a disgrace to the human race and I hope you never experience another moment of joy. You are all hateful, awful people. The world would be better off if you lot had never been born.

I’m just going to use this chaos for a second to plug one of my favorite Cyberpunk games. The demo is a self contained story and is completely free on Steam. It features a trans woman as one of its characters, and features one of the most fascinating analysis of what it means to be Trans in a cyberpunk setting as a piece of side content. Which should tell you how great the writing for the main game is.

In 2086, getting away with murder is nearly impossible. So if you're framed... you better hire a killer lawyer.

Discussion Isn't it a bit of a minor plot hole that there was zero "trauma team" reaction to Saburo's death? Only when Yorinobu called it in

Now we know that Trauma Team tracks the vitals of clients and dispatches an elite team within just minutes if something happens to them.

Saburo of course probably doesn't use TT but has his own even more elite, even faster response team probably with him at all times. And at his age (158 yo), his team would surely be watching his vitals like a hawk, and have even more in depth biometric telemetry than just his vitals.

So, I would expect a team to burst in as soon as he was being strangled, before he even died. But there were zero alarm bells until Yorinobu called it in.

More than a full minute passes from when he starts strangling, kills him, walks around a bit, sits on the table, etc, before he calls it in.

When he calls it in the voice doesn't even know why, until Yorinobu explains Saburo is dead. Then literally less than 5 seconds passes and Takemura is back in the room.
