Local News Hermantown city council protest

Citizens are currently preventing the Hermantown city council meeting, where they are scheduled to vote on the permits and the development agreement, from beginning. The city did not let everyone sign up to speak, and we are showing them we won't let this happen tonight. Tomorrow there is a court hearing where an injunction could be issued. Come down to 5105 Maple Grove Rd to hold space and shut this down! We will be here all night!

Local News Spirit Mountain Privatization Protest

Copied from Twin Ports DSA, no personal affiliation.

“AFSCME Spirit Mountain workers are fighting to stop the privatization of Duluth’s city-run ski slope, and the potential nullification of their contract. Workers are demanding succession of their existing contract, but the city is balking at that as they work out a deal with a private management firm. See https://www.savespiritmountain.com/ for details and updates.”

Personally I think giving Spirit Mountain up to private hands after years of public investment would be a mistake. The rhetoric that Spirit is a drain on Duluth is just flat out wrong.

If we loose this ski hill, the amount of tourism and jobs lost would be catastrophic for our town.

Anyways, make sure to support your fellow Duluthians!

Local News Anti-ICE protest today

Post image
940 Upvotes

There were a few hundred people. Maybe 300 at an upper estimate? [edit: someone said 500. I wouldn't be surprised if it was that.] We gathered at Lake & Superior and then marched to City Hall. The organizers started us on the sidewalks, but eventually people moved into a lane. There was monotonous chanting.

The speakers were the local Democratic Socialists. They connected ICE to systemic issues, and called for sweeping changes. Then Ross Thorn played a protest song. Someone had a "Stauber is Complicit" sign.

It was very cold. I think attendees felt intensely and were mostly glad at how things went.

Local News DULUTH CHAMBER OF COMMERCE ANNOUNCES SUPPORT FOR GOOGLE’S DATA CENTER!

Post image

https://www.wdio.com/top-stories/duluth-chamber-backs-hermantown-google-data-center-project/

Are we really surprised knowing the track record of these parasites that routinely seek to subvert democratic processes and the will of the people, workers, and labor through propaganda and pervasive monied influence?

The Duluth Area Chamber of Commerce is asking its members to stand with the corrupt city of Hermantown regime that is 1) rewarding corporate and antidemocratic collusion against the region’s citizenry and 2) 30 year tax breaks for a multi-trillion dollar corporations and 3) not passing a moratorium on data centers and maintaining the position of not pursuing adequate 3rd party environmental review for such a project. The chamber is standing with the irresponsible and corrupt regime in Hermantown over their actual business members interests and concerns of the vast majority of people in the region. They are also standing with rapacious asset management firms like Blackrock, whose interest in short-term profit maximization through the MNPower buyout and pushing data centers will negatively impact the region’s cost-of-living crisis.

This is the type of short-sightedness from the chamber that we will see even more of with a guy like the current interim president, Jim Roche, at the helm of the chamber. He is a Republican east coastal elitist that doesn’t live here that is directing a local chamber from New Hampshire. In fact he was in New Hampshire during this chamber process for endorsing of the data center process so he can't even make time to be in Duluth to work with chamber staff and the business community to know their real concerns regarding this horrific environmentally and socially unacceptable project.

The Chamber of Commerce has always run interference for corporate big business over local interests and is unapologetically against the working class (having historically funded and supported violent responses to labor movements across the country).

…

We live under barbarism, from the federal regime to the local, where fascist entities and aligned institutions (like the National Chamber of Commerce, the National Realtors Association, Blackrock, Mining Lobbyists, and Google) utilize their pervasive influence, propaganda, and money to subvert democracy to the wills of capital rather than the people. They bend the knee and reflexively comply with the erosion of democracy under the fascist project.

Fascism should more properly be called corporatism because it is the merger of state and corporate power." -Benito Mussolini

Local News Woh. What’s going on with the rental market?

Post image
139 Upvotes

I have been watching the rental market for the past few years in the Duluth area. After finally settling down in the fall at a place, I stopped looking. This morning I took a peek on what was available. I’m absolutely astonished by the wild increase in rental availability. I bet the amount of rentals available has literally doubled from anything ive seen in the past few years.

Has anyone noticed this? or anyone have boots on the ground as to why?

Local News Avoid Kenwood farms freeze dried snacks and more at Miller Hill Mall- Bullying Minors!

Thumbnail

I saw all of this on Facebook this morning posted by Carlton County Fire News and it really bothered me. I think it deserves to have more eyes on it so people can decide weather or not they want to support this business with their money.

Here is part of their post below. Full post here.

Carlton County Fire News has been contacted by multiple individuals regarding concerns about a business located inside Miller Hill Mall in Duluth, known as Kenwood Farms Freeze Dried Snacks and More.

A local resident recently raised concerns online about the care of an axolotl kept at the store. The individual claimed the animal appeared underweight and was being housed with a male axolotl, which they believe could lead to repeated breeding attempts and potential injury.

According to the person who raised the concern, which we learned later was a minor, they attempted to privately contact the store and even offered to take the animal to ensure it received proper care. They say their concerns were ignored and they were later blocked after asking questions publicly.

Initially, Carlton County Fire News chose not to report on the situation, as we generally avoid becoming involved in disputes between businesses and individuals.

However, the situation escalated after the business began posting publicly about the individual who raised the concerns.

Screenshots provided to CCFN appear to show the business posting several social media posts mocking the individual and using the hashtag #krazikarli, including posts encouraging people to make “crazy faces” referencing the person and comments suggesting they are only seeking online attention.

Additional screenshots also appear to show the business commenting on unrelated posts involving the individual, continuing the online ridicule.

Regardless of where someone stands on the original concern about the axolotl, many in the community have expressed concern about the way the situation is being handled publicly by a business toward a private citizen.

As of today 3/9/26 at about noon, Kenwood farms freeze dried snacks deleted their bullying posts with the hashtag.

I understand wanting to protect your small business, as it is likely their main source of income but they went after a minor. They went after a minor who was just trying to help educate, and help them provide a better life for their animals. Kenwood sought out images of this minor at a fundraiser they organized for Wildwoods Wildlife Rehabilitation, to continue bullying them. They even encouraged others to bully them by pushing their hashtag they created and giving a discount to people who posted with it.

I am posting this as a call to awareness of this business and it's behavior.

Its up to the individual to form their opinions on the matter.

I know I will not be purchasing anything from them going forward and they should make a formal apology to the minor that they have publicly bullied and harassed.

Local News FLOCK out of Duluth!!!

Post image
417 Upvotes

It’s time for the city of Duluth to end its contracts with FLOCK and Skydio drones! These are contracts that our elected city leaders signed without our consent as these firms violate our civil liberties and 4th amendment rights daily.

After witnessing the violence of the federal regime during Operation Metro Surge, Minnesotans do not want our cities or counties to continue being complicit to a national network of surveillance that has consistently been shown to aid and abet the capacity of the federal government to intimidate protesters, allow a lawless paramilitary immigration enforcement agency to reign terror on our streets, and that compounds AI data on all movements (not just ALPRs) that is available to multiple federal agencies.

When Duluth’s police chief Ceynowa brought both the FLOCK contract and Skydio contract to Duluth city council last year (utilizing these surveillance firms scripts to sell these contracts), the full scope of the surveillance capacities and data sharing with other law enforcement they allow was not presented to the council, nor the public, in a way that was forthright. The city and the DPD produced no effort at community stakeholder engagement nor did they attempt to persuade or gather constituent consent.

There is still a FLOCK camera at MNPower Plaza at the Lake Ave/Superior St intersection. Someone should do something about that (in minecraft).

Email your contempt and demands to end contracts with surveillance firms to its council and the mayor. Here are the emails of councilors if you want to email yourself and share with others!:

Local News Reinert wants to steal library’s location for private business and contribute to sprawl

The face-eating leopard mayor is planning to rip our public library from downtown, give the site to private capital, make a different library that contributes to parasitic car-dependent sprawl.

DULUTH — The city's main public library may be overdue for a change of scenery, and Mayor Roger Reinert contends it's high time to consider alternatives to the three-floor downtown building that serves as its operational base.

On Thursday, Library Services Manager Carla Powers and several staff members toured a prospective space in the Arrowpointe Building, 4316 Rice Lake Road, formerly home to UnitedHealthcare's Duluth operations.

Reinert stressed that the visit was purely exploratory and preliminary, characterizing it as being "100% in the homework phase."

"We, as leaders, are bound always to explore options, and this was something brought to us," he said.

In an email sent to city councilors Thursday, Powers wrote that she and a city team "are in the early stages of vetting an idea," which she described as "potentially relocating the main library to leased space in the Arrowpointe Building."

If the city decides to pursue that option at some point, Powers said: "In conjunction with this, a new branch would be established in a yet-to-be-determined leased space in the downtown."

Wherever the main library lands, Reinert explained that he remains committed to maintaining a meaningful downtown presence, especially in light of addressing the housing and mobility concerns of local residents.

"No. 2, it is the heart of our community, and I believe that a library belongs in the heart of our community," he said.

Thirdly, Reinert pointed to ongoing efforts to revitalize Duluth's downtown and convert underutilized commercial space into housing that could bring more people downtown at all hours of the day. He considers an attractive library as the sort of public amenity that could draw people to the neighborhood.

While 1st District Duluth City Councilor Wendy Durrwachter voiced support for the city's exploratory efforts, she said: "I would like to make sure all the services that support the most vulnerable people in our community stay downtown, where residents have ready walking or bus access."

Reinert noted that he has been discussing regional approaches that could provide pooled funding for libraries, parks and fire operations throughout the area since taking office two years ago. Against that backdrop, he said city staff are looking beyond downtown Duluth.

Although Reinert considers speculation to be premature at this point, he suggested: "If there were a regional possibility ... certainly our neighbors likely would be more interested in a location that's closer to their residents."

In that respect, he agreed a Rice Lake Road location might seem more appealing to the people of Hermantown, Rice Lake and Proctor than the site of the current downtown main library. Reinert noted that roughly one-third of Duluth library cardholders already hail from neighboring communities.

Reinert said staff will consider alternatives, such as leasing vs. owning the space that houses the main public library, as they weigh the city's options.

Duluth's current main library has been flagged for its energy inefficiency and a layout that makes the space difficult to safely oversee — a situation that has been brought to light by repeated troublesome incidents, including attacks on staff.

"You would not design a library building today the way it was in the 1980s," Reinert said. "I was not elected to be a status-quo mayor, and in many cases, I'm trying to take a few steps back and whiteboard the situation and ask: If we were going to do this today, how would we do it?"

If the main library stays in its current location, Reinert said he favors the idea of reimagining the corner as a possible site for a taller building that could accommodate a combination of uses, such as library services, retail/commercial operations and housing up top.

"It really is an amazing location. And I invite people to think: What would it be like to have a residential tower like that on a corner with easy walking access to Bayfront, the DECC, the lake and the Lakewalk?" Reinert said.

"But I think what everyone would acknowledge is that the option of doing nothing — to continue on with what we have where it's at, with Band-Aids and duct tape, is unacceptable," he said.

Toward that end, Reinert described feeling a certain sense of urgency.

"I'm not here to muddle along, and I think within the next year we need to make some decision about where we're headed with our main library, whether we're rebuilding on the current location or partnering with our neighbors and doing something different," he said.

Local News Another ICE murder

Excecution by gunfire of someone on the ground, already restrained by maybe half a dozen ICE agents, reportedly 5 shots. You can find video in r/minneapolis but as usual you have no obligation to look for it. No doubt more video from different angles will emerge.

As usual, we can expect the shooter to get praise from Trump, Noem and Vance; and there will no doubt be an order for the FBI to open a criminal investigation of the deceased. Because that's America today. :(

Local News Big Cannabis news

The Star Tribune confirmed the story a few days ago that ANANG Native Cannabis Co.’s third retail space will open next door to Fond-du-Luth Casino.  The DNT and NNN followed a day later. Pine Knot first broke the news in February.

The tribes are the biggest players in the state, behind the medical MSOs, and this will be the 9th retail location in the city. Tribes and medical dispensaries have different rules than the rest of the licensees, so they are not impacted by Duluth’s decision to arbitrarily cap the number of businesses that can retail in the city.  The 7 retail locations will now have to compete against the medical MSO, Vireo, that bought Grandma’s Miller Hill location and the Fond Duluth Lac Band.

Tribes, while on tribal land, can grow as much as they’d like, don’t have to submit to OCM quality or safety testing, don’t pay any state or local taxes, and are not subject to local delivery bans, like the one in Duluth. (24-056-O 8A-5(d)(1)) So customers that don’t want to travel downtown, the tribe can deliver to them at home.

The new ANANG location is set to open its doors on April 20, 2027, according to Fox21 news. 420!

Local News No more mass surveillance in Duluth! Duluth Police Department decides to not renew Flock Safety contract (ending September 7)

Thumbnail

Guess DPD finally took the hint that we won't put up with this crap after nearly all their Flock cameras disappeared.

Earlier articles said 6 of 9 cameras were taken down, but as of now it's actually 9 of 10 (the news didn't double count an intersection with two cameras, and 3 more have since been taken down). The only camera remaining is on the intersection of Grand Ave and Central Ave; it sure would be a shame if it disappeared too.

Hopefully this gives DPD some pause before signing another mass surveillance contract with another company. If they do anyways, I'm sure they won't last long either.

Edit: Looks like the last camera is now missing, there are officially zero Flock cameras in Duluth!

Local News Listing of businesses related to Brucklemeyer and the Apostolic Church

I've used Stone Plumbing on several projects and feel dirty and disgusted that they seem to be associated with the Apostolic Church. Based on the comments relating to the recent Star Tribune article, there are a great number of Apostolic or Brucklemeyer adjacent businesses that are directly associated with and/or complicit in covering up sexual abuse of children. Moving forward, I'd like to do better about not spending my dollars with any associated businesses, and I'm sure others would like to have this information before they make decisions on where they spend their money.

Please support small local businesses and do your own due diligence.

Local News A message from workers at the Whole Foods Co-op

Thumbnail
gallery
249 Upvotes

We, a collection of workers at Duluth Minnesota’s very own local foods cooperative, Whole Foods Co-op, are sending this out in an effort to make our member-owners and the public aware of our plight. While on the surface Whole Foods Co-op has a reputation for pursuing and supporting progressive values, including sustainability and equity, behind the scenes the needs of our actual workforce are being constantly disregarded by those in positions of authority. Time and time again management refuses to respond appropriately to the worker’s needs and requests and they seem wholly uninterested in creating long term systems of equity such as livable wages (commensurate with the current economic reality), actually affordable healthcare, and reasonable responses to a wide swath of on-the-job needs (such as honoring doctor’s notes that should allow people to be excused from work without penalty). Our needs are being consistently violated or ignored.

This has resulted in an oftentimes toxic or contentious workplace environment wherein workers are required to put on happy faces for customers while being treated with disdain, gaslighting, and active disregard behind the scenes. We want management and the board to uphold the supposed values of the co-op and to genuinely meet our needs with empathy in a timely and equitable manner. They have the opportunity to help create a (genuinely) values-driven workplace where people are paid very well, given great affordable healthcare that doesn’t bankrupt them and PTO days that are consistently honored (not disregarded), and where people are given empathic treatment in general.

In short, we want the co-op to start to truly embody the values that it publicly espouses but doesn’t practice in reality. We’re calling on our community, member-owners and others, to put pressure on management and the board of directors to step up and do the real work of equity, inclusion, empathy, legit living wages, very affordable healthcare, respect, consideration, and dignity on the job. Only then we might yet stem the tide of workplace burnout, massive turnover, and mental health crises that are currently ripping through our local member-owned organization.

Included with this plea for help is a copy of the text from our union’s presentation to the board on January 27th. Please read through it. The presentation outlines many of our issues, detailing a lack of sufficient response and lack of positive resolution to many issues plaguing co-op workers. We have a regressive, punitive workplace culture in which we are punished for being sick by a grade-school style point system which disempowers workers and encourages us to work while sick. Please, help us make the changes that we need to see so that Whole Foods Co-op may turn a corner and live the values that it so vociferously and publicly proclaims.

From fighting for the municipalization of public utilities (including ending the monopolization of the cable-based ISP, Spectrum) to the Mayor banning NDAs in Superior, and now proactive efforts to stop big tech and private equity’s parasitic interests (and vile eschatological ’end times’ ideology) from buying our municipal democracy (and destroying humanity)...Superior is showing up for residents and their interests.

Duluth and the surrounding region should be asking themselves, “What is going on with our municipal government and what sorts of parasitic forces are actively working to prevent progressive people-oriented policies that benefit us (the working class majority) from being proposed or implemented?”
