Moving to Duluth 3.0: Finding Housing

Hey bridge trolls, we've got some extra mod help now so we're going to work on some quality of life improvements around here. Starting with these megathreads we'll use to help update the Wiki. (As an aside, we're still happy to give people access to the Wiki if they want to help with updates)

Going entirely by vibes, I think this would be the most helpful topic to start with. Feel free to give any suggestions, tips, notes, links, whatever you may think. might help someone looking for a place to live in the area.

Some suggestions for things you might contribute:

1.) Thoughts on different neighborhoods and towns - Please be accurate and polite. We all know some areas are more unfortunate than others, it is totally ok to mention that, but be sure you're current and respectful. What an area was like ten years ago may not be accurate anymore.

2.) Resources for finding places to stay (renting & buying)- Things that may not come up on google. This is one place advertising for yourself or someone you know is acceptable (though be sure not to DOX anyone, including yourself.)

3.) Resources for unhoused people - Either temporary or permanent. If you have knowledge of shelters or resources, this would be a great place to add them.

4.) Reviews for different rental companies - Be careful to, again, be accurate. We all know some places have a reputation for a reason and you are more than welcome to leave negative reviews, just don't use this as a place to grind your axe or get revenge.

5.) Questions - For now this would be a good place to ask us about any particulars. We are going to start doing a new "Moving to Duluth" post weekly via Automod like they do in r/asheville on the suggestion of one of our users, but I'm saving that until after these Megathreads have run their course.

6.) Financial considerations - Is there anywhere affordable to live? What are taxes like in the different cities?

7.) Schools - Pros and cons, other considerations?

Just some ideas, I may use some of these for other megathreads. Also, please keep politics out of this to the best of your ability. Nothing derails these things faster.

Thanks everyone! You all rule.

Local News Hermantown city council protest

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Citizens are currently preventing the Hermantown city council meeting, where they are scheduled to vote on the permits and the development agreement, from beginning. The city did not let everyone sign up to speak, and we are showing them we won't let this happen tonight. Tomorrow there is a court hearing where an injunction could be issued. Come down to 5105 Maple Grove Rd to hold space and shut this down! We will be here all night!

Local News Show Up at Hermantown City Council Tuesday 10/27 *before* @7:30

Post image
15 Upvotes

After hundreds of people showed up today at Hermantown City Council before a vote on the permits for the proposed data center, some were turned away from the building or not allowed to speak despite waiting hours for some. People began loudly asking to be allowed to speak and the City Council members did not come out and start their meeting or address the crowd's concerns, leaving a handful of police officers alone with the frustrated crowd. The police were respectful and handled the situation professionally despite apparently being abandoned by Hermantown leadership during this time. After almost two hours, the announcement was made that the meeting was adjourned and would be rescheduled to tomorrow, Tuesday, October 27th at 7:30. People reported that they didn't state whether they meant a.m. or p.m., but it is assumed that they meant p.m. The time of the meeting is not listed on their website as of the time of this positing.

Given that the Hermantown City Council didn't allow people enough time to sign up to speak or provide adequate space for all who wanted to attend, it is advised you come as early possible in order to get in line to speak. This project stands to not only destroy Adolph, but drastically reduce the quality of life for everyone and everything in this region. Google&friends aren't giving up and neither should you!

Question Aspirus St.Luke's Previous Nurses

Has anyone received the $10,000 sign on bonus but left before your two years was up? Did you end up having to repay it? Did they pro-rate it or create a payment plan? Unfortunately I didn't save mine and used it towards medical bills at Aspirus. This job has made me want to quit nursing completely, I've been so depressed and feeling hopeless.

Question Fireplace inspection recommendation?

As the title says. Never had a fireplace (wood burning) before and wondering if anyone has a preferred company for getting their yearly inspection done. I tried searching previous Reddit posts but none were inspection specific.

Not necessarily looking for the cheapest service - just best value/most trustworthy.

Local Events 🛑YOUR PRESENCE TOMORROW COULD STOP THE DATA CENTER FOR GOOD! 🛑

Post image
283 Upvotes

Tomorrow night the hermantown city council is voting to approve the permits and the development agreement for the google data center. If they pass the agreement, google can sue to prevent the city from taking any action to block the project.

This Tuesday, there is a court hearing and a strong possibility of a long-term injunction that would halt any further agreements related to the data center. That means, if we can prevent this vote from happening on Monday, the project could fail entirely.

The best way to make this happen is show up at city council chambers at 5:30 and sign up to speak, use up meeting time, and create chaos.

We need to get to 10 pm without a vote, so even if public speaking isn't your favorite activity, anything you say or do will make a difference.

Question Volunteering opportunity for a class

This is kind of random, but I have to get in 4 hours of volunteering for a class. I’m curious if anyone knows of anything I can do either this Thursday or Friday. I don’t currently have my car so preferably a place with decent bus access. I’d really appreciate any suggestions even though this is a super short notice question.

Question Stylist rec: Online appointment booking

Looking for a new stylist who does online appointment booking. I've been going to Sisu for a long time and love the vibe, but I want to be able to book online and often when I think to call, they're not open.

Any recs? I have pretty easy hair, don't need any specialized work. I'm also pretty basic so I feel like some of the trendier spots might not be my cup of tea. Just regular haircuts and a partial foil once in a while when I want to splurge. Eyebrow waxing availability is a plus.

Local News Hermantown accelerates plan for final permitting of Data Center

The Hermantown City Council decided regular meetings were too slow (and the next fell after a court date), and so scheduled a special meeting for tomorrow (Monday) to pass the final permits and agreements. This would irreversibly comment our region to a Hyperscale Data Center.

There are a lot of concerns about this accelerated process: it gives the City Attorney and outside observers just four days in total to review two hundred pages of commitments, obligations, legalese, etc. To say that's reckless when dealing with a trillion dollar company is an understatement.

Everyone should be up in arms about this: even if you were pro-data center, this isn't the right way to put one in your community. You'd want your city to dot its i's and cross its t's!

And for everyone else, who is concerned about the process as well as the energy usage, stream impacts, future prospects of data centers, cementing Google as a political actor in the region, the slight benefits relative to total investments, AI bubbles, and so on -- this is just a spit in the face.

And while nominally, this is a "Hermantown" data center, practically it's a "Duluth-area data center." The huge energy infrastructure build-out, the increased energy use, the watersheds, all balloon beyond Hermantown.

There will be a protest rally outside the Hermantown City Hall at 4:30 on Monday. The Council Meeting starts at 6:30, but they have removed general speaking time. (Comment before agenda items, so they say, remain.)

Hey all!

I am curious if Duluth has any local video game communities, events or clubs? I’m usually big into FPS games but open to any! Do any of the TTG/Card stores have events like this?

Thanks in advance!

I’m wondering people’s thoughts on if West Duluth could support a planet fitness? Maybe in the old Kmart location? I don’t have the funds for this but maybe someone who sees this might :)

Local Events Halloween Movies In Two Harbors

Hi! I volunteer up at the Harbor Theater in Two Harbors. It's a really cool renovated theater and they have showings and events mostly on weekends. You can also screen any from their 10,000 films selection, for a fee. Check out the site if you're interested.

This week, they're screening Ferris Bueller's Day Off on Thursday (10/29) at 7pm (free), A Clockwork Orange on Friday (10/30) and Saturday (10/31) at 7pm, and Altered States on Saturday (10/31) at 11pm.

The theater is at 616 2nd Avenue, just off Main Street.

Really recommend checking this place out and getting involved, if you love movies. Feel free to message me if you're thinking about a screening. I'm considering getting a group together in December to pick a film and run the night as volunteers.

Question Food Allergies and Fourth Fest Question

Update: A down vote for being pro-active? And why wait until July when the event is in July? Does anyone know of how 2026 was for food? Thank you! Or maybe I am wasting my time and should just go elsewhere! :P

Why bother listing the food vendors if they are only going to list them in July, when the event is July 4th? Seriously? Are they that slow? Wow! And they want to ban all outside food on top of it all! And then, on a case by case basis, maybe, if you got the right letterhead and right food allergies, they'll make an exception?

I was wondering if the Fourth Fest has any Gluten free, dairy free options that are also peanut, tree nut, cinnamon free but is also real food? I mean hamburger, hot dogs, brats as opposed to sugar me this and sugar me that? Chicken and Turkey don't count for me, as I react to that too, but my sister can eat it if its gluten free and dairy free at least. I don't react to egg anymore, just everything else poultry. ROFL

I might be watching the fireworks from the hotel instead, but only because it is less headache. Technically, I also react to legumes and lentils, but amount matters. I'm hoping that if I keep my bucket low, I'll tolerate the guar gum or xanthum gum that the bun will have, because my reactions are only itchiness.

Thanks!

Question Looking for a roommate ASAP!

Hello Duluth! I am currently looking for a roommate to sublease in a beautiful Duluth east hillside home. It’s a good sized 3 bedroom house with 2 female roommates and a cat. We are college students.

Rent is $567 a month plus $60-$80 additionally for utilities. The house is kept clean and quiet, making it an inviting space for anyone. I’m looking for someone who can move in ASAP.

Please comment/post to this thread if you have any questions and/or are interested in the space!

Can y'all PLEASE stop at the stop sign? I know it's confusing, but the big red signs that say "STOP" mean that you need to stop before the intersection, not halfway through it.

Just about every other day I have some jerk fly out in front of me on west 1st street. One of these days I'm going to hit the accelerator and see whose car has better safety features.

Question Public restrooms in Canal Park

Hi so I’m fairly new to Duluth, and I’m going on a first date walk through Canal Park, and I’m feeling very nervous about possibly needing to pee and not have any idea where to go 😭

I remember visiting Duluth when I was young and not being able to find a public bathroom in Canal Park and having to run into the hotel. I really don’t want to ask my date to find me a bathroom, I’d prefer to just know where to walk to with them if I need to.

Thanks so much 🙏🙏🙏
