Announcement A note on scammers, impersonators, and public blacklists

Hey everyone,

I want to address a recent post I removed by u/NotSUPERita about creating a list of trusted artists and scammers, as well as the broader issue of bad actors on r/gamedevclassifieds.

First, I want to apologize to u/NotSUPERita. I understand why you were trying to help, and I do not think the idea came from a bad place. Scammers and impersonators are a real problem here, and it makes sense that people want better ways to protect themselves and others.

That said, I do not think a public or semi-public user-run blacklist is the right solution.

Any single person’s list of “good” and “bad” experiences is subjective. Even with good intentions, lists like that can be abused, misused, or based on misunderstandings. A false accusation could seriously harm an innocent artist, developer, or freelancer’s reputation and business. Once someone is publicly labeled a scammer, that damage is hard to undo.

This applies to moderators too. Even I am subject to bias, incomplete information, and my own interpretation of events. I cannot be judge, jury, and executioner over someone’s professional reputation, and I do not think anyone else should be put in that position either. That is the line I am trying to be careful with.

I know scammers are a problem, and I am aware that this subreddit has been affected by bad actors, impersonators, and people misrepresenting themselves or their work. But I have not yet found a solution that addresses those issues without also creating a serious risk of innocent people getting caught in the mix.

For now, the best advice is still to do your due diligence before working with someone:

  • Verify that their portfolio actually belongs to them
  • Ask for links to established accounts or websites
  • Check whether their email, Discord, ArtStation, GitHub, itch, LinkedIn, or other profiles line up
  • Be cautious with new accounts, vague portfolios, stolen-looking portfolios, or people who avoid verification
  • Use contracts, milestones, and payment methods that offer some protection
  • Do not rely only on someone’s Reddit username or a single message thread

I know that is not a perfect answer. It is a frustrating situation, and I understand why people want something stronger. But asking people to do their homework before hiring or accepting work is better than creating a system where someone’s business can be damaged because they were falsely added to a list.

If there is a better way to handle this that protects people from scammers without turning into public reputation policing or false callouts, I am open to hearing it. Any solution needs to be fair, evidence-based, and careful about the harm it could cause.

Edit: I forgot to add one more important point: any solution also cannot require a heavy amount of moderator time.

Running this job board is not a job. No one on the mod team has the time, or realistically should be expected to have the time, to manually verify users, assign trusted labels, maintain reputation lists, or act as an ongoing approval system for freelancers and clients.

That kind of system would create a lot of work, and it would also create a false sense of safety. Even with moderation, users would still need to verify who they are working with and make their own judgment before hiring, accepting work, or sending payment.

Community-Wide Alert: Do not engage with P1 GAMES (Formerly P1 VIRTUAL CIVILIZATION)

I'm truly getting tired of this nonsense u/RedEagle_MGN

Changing your organizations name doesn't stop people from reaching out to me with horror stories every few months.

DO NOT ENGAGE WITH THESE PEOPLE, no matter what they call themselves. They exploit the inexperienced and naive, convincing you to sign away your rights to everything you create. Don’t fall for their lies. You do not need to join a volunteer group or give up ownership of your work to gain skills in the game industry. Learning on your own is far better than what P1 offers. If you want a real education, seek out accredited programs and courses instead.

Their latest tactic is using LinkedIn ads to lure victims. I’m unsure what it will take to stop this con artist, but I’ll do my part to be a thorn in their side. My goal is to protect people in this community from their schemes.

Spread the word, be safe.

PAID - 2D Art | Animation [Paid] Steam capsule key art for a historical card game, inked comic style, no AI

Hi, I’m a solo developer from Belgium making a game where you fight real historical battles (unannounced, so no name or trailer here yet; screenshots and more details on request). I’m preparing the Steam page and need key art for the capsules.

The piece: one illustration that crops to all Steam sizes (header 920×430, main 1232×706, small 462×174, vertical 748×896, library 600×900, hero 3840×1240). One strong subject, room around it, and clear space for the title. It must read at thumbnail size.

What it has to say: this is a card game, and the cards hold armies from every era. I have a rough layout sketch (cards in the centre, a horse rider on the left, a Tiger I on the right) that I can send on request; the composition is yours to improve.

Style: inked comic illustration, clean outlines. Colors: free choice.

Budget: €800-1600 for the key art, depending on experience. If you also do lettering, quote the title logo separately; I’d prefer one artist for both. Possible follow-up work on card art for the same game.

Terms: no generative AI at any stage, and I’ll ask to see work in progress. Sketch for approval first, 1-2 revision rounds. Exclusive commercial rights, all media, no time limit; layered source file included. 50% on start, 50% on delivery, by invoice. Credit on the store page.

To apply, send: a portfolio link, your price for the art and, if applicable, the logo, and your timeline.

Edit: thanks for the replies (so far, and future replies, and the DMs I got), I will get back to you tomorrow or later this week.

FOR HIRE - 3D Modeler | Animation [FOR HIRE] 3D Generalist - full pipeline experience | Unity - Godot | Game ready creatures, characters, props & more!

Thumbnail

Hi there!

I'm Kambru and I'm a 3D Game Artist with experience creating production-ready assets for indie games.

I specialize in non-human characters, creatures, machinery and robots. I have a degree on Industrial Design, so I can iterate and design assets with modularity and ease of use in mind.

I enjoy working on stylized projects more than photorealistic ones, and I have experience on Unity and Godot asset pipelines.

My work is 100% human made, no AI involved in any stage of the process.

I can handle the full pipeline, including:

- Design and Concept Art

- High poly sculpting

- Clean modeling and retopology

- Efficient UV packing

- Material maps baking (and RGBA channel packing)

- Rigging

- Animation

- Engine-ready export for Unity and Godot

————

These are some of the projects I have recently contributed to:

Mars Tactics
On Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1727760/Mars_Tactics/

I worked on this project as an animator (and rigger) making +60 animations for human and robot characters.
I had to rig the robot models from scratch (humanoid and quadruped), and animate the preexisting human rig, with extra focus on the feel and weight of the characters.

Here's the link to a review from Mars Tactics developer, Manhole, about working with me as an artist.
—

The Witch Simulator
On Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/4906800/The_Witch_Simulator/

I was tasked with designing and creating a cockatrice model, based on a pre-existing chicken model that already came rigged and with animations. I remade the textures, baking the original ones onto a new map, and using it as a base for the new material texture that also has reptile characteristics. The main challenge was making sure none of the animations broke on the new model, and that the extra body-parts were animated too.
—

BALSEO: The Sea Beyond
On Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/4338640/BALSEO_The_Sea_Beyond/

For this game, I created the main character model from scratch, (based on the concept art provided by the client).
The main challenge for this one was that all the previous animations from the placeholder character had to keep working on the new model, despite the difference in proportions. Fortunately it came out great, requiring only minimal adjustments on a couple of specific animations, instead of needing to remake all of them, saving a lot of time and money.
—

Capybara against humanity
On Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/4165210/CapybaraTD/

For this project, I designed and developed the capybara main character from scratch, replacing an AI generated placeholder model.
I also created environmental assets, including a modular wooden bridge that optimized the level generation process with minimal impact in performance. The game is made in Godot, and the bridges follow a curve that can be adjusted to automatically generate new paths for the levels.
—

If you have an indie project that could benefit from my skills and experience, don't hesitate to contact me!

I don't mind working on one off projects, but longer term collaboration or contract work would be ideal for me. In any case, you can send me a message and we can work something out.

PAID - 2D Art | Animation [PAID] Pixel Artist Needed | 5 Directions 24×24 Overworld Sprites, 4 Frames)

Hello,

We're working on an indie RTS/RPG/autobattler and are looking for a pixel artist to help create animated overworld rts map assets.

We need 24×24 sprites with 8 directional facings and 4 animation frames per direction. Our game uses an orthogonal perspective, inspired by games like Ogre Battle: MotBQ and PoLQ.

Our immediate need is a wagon.

We're looking for someone who can reasonably match our existing art style. You can see more of our game on Twitter: https://x.com/SacredLightGame

We're looking to pay around $50 per completed asset, depending on complexity. Work will be commissioned one asset at a time, with additional opportunities as development progresses.

Consistency with our existing art style is important, as is maintaining readable animations and proportions across all eight directions.

If interested, please reach out with a portfolio, preferably including examples of directional pixel art or animated overworld sprites. And to help filter out automated responses, please include the word "wagon" somewhere in your message and mention which piece in your portfolio you think best demonstrates your ability to handle this kind of work.

Thanks!

PAID - 2D Art + 3D Modeler | Animation [HIRING] Paid: pixel artist for a dark top-down RPG — short paid test, then a small environment piece (ENG/FR)

We’re a two-person indie studio making a 2D co-op multiplayer RPG (Godot 4): grounded, dark, late-medieval fantasy, no flashy magic. The title is not public yet.

Our environments need a real artist’s hand. We want someone to set the reference style that our team and our tools will copy afterwards.

The job

  • Hand-paint one environment piece (about 12 × 10 tiles, ≈ 384 × 320 px): a cave corner with wet rock, black water and rubble. We give you the base; scale, perspective and shape are already correct, so you only repaint the rendering.
  • Write a one-page ruleset (light, edges, textures, colour count, dithering) that our team can apply alone.
  • Fixed palette (182 colours, provided). Top-down three-quarter view. Layered source files (.aseprite or .psd) are part of the delivery.
  • A second piece (a village corner) may follow if the result fits and the budget allows. No promise.

Who we look for: a portfolio of top-down environment pixel art (characters, caves, dungeons, villages, citys, interiors), comfortable with dark moods and a strict palette, able to explain your method in simple written English or French. Bonus: Godot or 3D-render-to-pixel-art experience.

Terms

  • A written contract is signed before we send any file: full assignment of rights on all deliverables (images, source files, written rules) for the game and its promotion, plus an NDA.
  • Original work, by hand. No generative AI for the deliverables, and no copying of existing games.
  • Independent contractor: your own hours and tools, no exclusivity.
  • Credit in the game if you wish. Portfolio use after the public release, or earlier with our written OK.

To apply: send a link to your portfolio, your availability and 3 lines on how you work. We reply to shortlisted profiles by private message. Please don’t send files or unsolicited work.

Thank you.
