Discussion Why is fishing even legal?

Just this past Saturday I caught a Canada goose whose lower beak looked swollen. It kept making a strange spitting motion, as if it was trying to expel something. I wasn’t sure whether there was a hook in its mouth, but I knew if I didn't take a chance to catch it, it may fly off and I may not see it again. So I caught it, and brought it to my local wildlife rescue center. On Sunday, partner and I caught an American coot that was badly entangled in fishing line. I took it earlier today to the rescue, while I was there, I asked about the Canada goose I had brought in previously. The woman handling intake took my number and got back to me some time later to let me know there had indeed been a hook stuck in the goose’s mouth. Thankfully it wasn’t too far down its throat, they were able to remove it and the bird was recovering well. They normally never give updates, so I’m not sure if she was new and didn’t know their policy or if she just felt inclined to let me know because she liked me. Today I saw a pelican with a long fishing line hanging out of its mouth. I also spotted another coot with fishing line that had clearly taken most of the toes off one of its feet. It hopped back into the water before I had the chance to try catching it. I had to head back to work, so I had no choice but to leave it and walk away. All of these injuries happened within the span of less than a week. Bare in mind, I walk the perimeter of both the lakes here every single day, picking up fishing litter, yet the birds still keep falling victim to fishing tackle injuries. I feel so tired you guys 😞 seeing these sweet innocent animals hurt just breaks me.

Fishing is a form of animal abuse that extends far beyond the immediate harm inflicted on aquatic life. It causes widespread collateral damage to countless other species. One of the most insidious aspects of this practice is the disposal of fishing line. The common rebuttal is that anglers simply need to be more responsible and avoid littering. This framing is misleading. Littering is inherent to the act of fishing itself. Hooks frequently snag on submerged branches, jagged rocks, and other underwater debris. In an attempt to retrieve their hooks, anglers yank on the line. Sometimes they succeed, but often the line snaps, leaving a portion behind in the water. “It’s just one line,” every fisher tells themselves. Overtime this amount adds up. On land, fishing line can take hundreds of years to break down, and in low-oxygen aquatic environments, it is unclear whether it degrades at all. Studies on this are lacking. Objects that lines become tangled around, such as branches, can later float to the surface. Many bird species wade through shallow waters while foraging, making them especially vulnerable to submerged or partially submerged lines. Even more insidiously, birds sometimes unknowingly swim into active fishing lines while anglers are still casting. In their attempts to free themselves, they thrash about often causing the line to snap and leaving a portion wrapped tightly around them. As the bird pecks at the line in distress trying to get it off, it tightens further, cutting into flesh and restricting circulation. Whether discarded on land or beneath water, these nearly indestructible filaments coil around unsuspecting animals, slicing into their bodies and impairing their ability to move, hunt, or escape predators. Once abandoned, fishing line can persist in the environment for hundreds of years or more. In low-oxygen conditions, there is no clear evidence that it ever fully breaks down. These lines function as long-lasting torture devices, maiming and killing countless animals long before any degradation occurs. The harm continues even after death. Animals who die with fishing tackle on or inside their bodies are often consumed by scavengers or predators, passing the debris into another body and perpetuating the cycle of suffering. If we, as a society, condemn cruelty toward pets like cats and dogs, we must also question why anglers are permitted to endanger and harm so many other sentient beings with impunity. It is time to recognize fishing for what it truly is: a practice that inherently causes suffering and irreversible environmental damage.

Discussion I have a geese on campus and it always asks to get on my laps, but then bites my arm until it bruises. Does it hate me or like me?

Sorry, I’m not really sure where to ask, but I assume this should be the best place to ask about a geese. It never approaches me with his neck down like websites say when geese are in aggressive mode, but it does come to me with his neck up whenever I kneel down and immediately starts pecking me (it does kind of hurt), but when I walk away he will ask me to kneel down again by biting my pants. Once he climbs on my laps he’ll bite my hands or arm and bites even harder when I pull away. I don’t get it. Does it like me or not?

Discussion I have befriended a sad goose, where do I go from here

A couple of weeks ago I spotted a goose that seemed stuck on the wrong side of the bird fence (there’s a low fence around my local park pond to protect the pond birds from dogs)

He was missing a lot of feathers, seemed skeletal and I’d seen him making failed attempts to get back over the fence. I contacted some local bird rescues and seems like none had capacity to help. Eventually we found a rescue that would take him but we would have to bring him there ourselves.

When we went looking for him he wasn’t in his usual spots so I assumed a dog had finally got to him.

Lo and behold two weeks later I spot him on the right side of the fence looking a little more healthy, I gave him a little bit of my dogs snacking chicken as a treat and little did I know I would have a new best bud, for the last 4 days in a row he’s been in the same spot every morning and will run along the fence to greet me. I’ve decided to start taking healthier snacks for him to eat but I’m wondering if continuing the friendship is the right thing to do…

He already has zero fear of me and my dog (an extremely shy and quiet little corgi whose more scared of him but still I don’t want to teach him dogs are safe) He seems to be getting bullied by the other geese (I have to be careful to stop feeding him when the other geese come near or they will attack him) He is still very thin and bedraggled but does seem to be putting on weight.

Should I keep feeding him? Will this make him too dependant on humans? Should I try again to take him to a bird sanctuary? I’m worried he won’t last the winter with how thin and ostracised he is.

Discussion Gus update: I spoke to some rescues

I spoke to some wildlife rescues about what’s best to do with him, I also had a good think about bringing him home but unfortunately my garden isn’t suitable for what he needs and my landlords not willing to let me modify it. My partner and neighbours also unfortunately don’t support the idea either.

The rescue people have said they’ve assessed photos and basically he’s best off staying where he is as they only deal with geese to euthanise or if it’s a quick fix (plastic caught on neck or similar)

They’ve asked that I keep them updated on his condition and try to feed him wherever possible. They’ve said he should recover as we are projected to have a mild winter and he just needs to get to his next shed, eat as much high protein food as he can and he should be fine.

Luckily I live next to the park so I’m happy to go a couple times a day , I’ve ordered some high protein bird food and in the meantime I bought a bag of bird seed and some peas and corn for him to eat.

I feel awful for not being able to bring him home , but I’m committed to feeding him up and doing my best to get him through the winter so hopefully he will be okay.

Discussion People love to hate on them, but let’s not forget geese literally saved Rome 🏛️

I was just thinking about the story of the Capitoline geese. Back in 390 BC, when the Gauls tried to sneak attack Rome in the dead of night, the guard dogs slept right through it. But the sacred geese of Juno? They started HONKING their hearts out, woke up the defenders, and literally saved the city.

They aren't just "mean birds" they are ancient, city saving guardians with zero fear. Just wanted to drop some appreciation for our honky friends today. Next time someone complains about a goose hissing at them, remind them they are in the presence of royalty. They demand respect, and they deserve it!

Thousands of years later, they’re still doing the exact same job

Suspicious person? HONK
Dog gets too close? HONK
You exist within 30 meters of their territory? HONK

Respect the geese!

Discussion Need help finding a home for 5 domestic 16 year old geese

Post image

A dear friend of mine very unfortunately has to re home 5 of their domestic geese that are very old. There are 3 males and 2 females and they have been together since they hatched. They were show geese and live a wonderful life it’s so sad they are to be relocated the owner would be happy to continue to pay for feed and anything necessary for their well-being, including building a structure. She just wants to make sure they are treated with respect and care. They are noisy and finding a home for them is hard. So if anyone wants them or know someone that is willing to treat these seniors with respect and care and compassion please let me know. LOCATED IN MARYLAND

I went out a little earlier than I normally do and he wasn’t at his usual spot. I spotted him at the bank and shouted him which normally would bring him pattering over but he didn’t budge, I hopped over the fence and offered out some food and he slowly came over and then wouldn’t eat!

He seemed nervous which is very unlike him. Also strangely none of the other birds came over either (if there’s food on offer you’ve normally only got <1 minute before before the pigeons/coots/moorhens/seagulls/ducks/other geese descend upon you. Very strange!

I left the food for him in a pile (don’t normally do that as worried about rats etc) And gave him some space and as I walked away he was just stood over it not eating still.

After my dog walk I was worrying about him so I looped back to see how he was doing and this time he spotted me and was back to his usual excited self and immediately seemed to want food, I only had a little bit left so gave him that and a little bit of my dogs beef slice treats (which he goes mad for but I’m trying to avoid giving him meat now)

My best guesses for the brief bout of nerves ; - there was park maintenance happening and the mower was running when I first went over, maybe the noise spooked the birds? -maybe someone had literally just fed them all? I’m not the only one who feeds him. - there was a guy in high vis doing digging on one of the banks, maybe the birds get shifty when high vis people are around? (There are sometimes RSPB people dealing with bird problems around the pond, they don’t deal with geese but I imagine the birds witness high vis people periodically catching them)

Anyway, it’s not a big deal, I just don’t know much about birds so if anyone has insights on his unusual food refusal I’d love to hear them.

I’m not surprised geese, especially Canada Geese are still under appreciated and hated for awful reasons. You have some of those grown men or women still afraid of Canada Geese! Because, they still believe the stereotypes of them from internet lies as well as judging them!! Canada Geese are not always aggressive and they always become defensive during breeding season like now in spring.

I got downvoted for defending them and I thought the Disneyland Reddit Community is inclusive, but not at all. It is sad to see that some humans do suck and they can be very immature when it comes to Canada Geese just wanting to live and raising a family in the parks including Disney California Adventure.

The Gander has every right to defend his nesting mate during breeding season as well as defending his goslings from predators and threats. If the gander and his wife don’t see you as a threat, they’ll leave you alone and of course once they trust you enough. The geese family will bring their babies for you to see and feed.

Yes, ducks are cute. But drakes (male mallards) during breeding season are not really cute of how they do to female ducks. But Mallards are always skittish which is understandable, but Geese are more tolerant compare to ducks. It seems Disneyland ducks are always praised while Disneyland geese are usually insulted and ignorantly hated for bad reasons.

Which is why I won’t post or share about Geese in the Disneyland Reddit anymore.

Do any fellow geese lovers here still deal with this almost everywhere regarding Canada Geese?

Discussion Death and sexual violence threats over a goose

The story;

Crystal (all names are fake in this story) rode from her parents to her home on a Dutch rural road. A goose emerged from the cornfields on the right side, walking to the house on the left side.

The goose, an Egyptian goose, with a visible birth defect at it's wings (angelwing), was seen by Crystal as a wild animal in need. Egyptian geese are not pets in the Netherlands. So she parked her car and rang the bell of the house this goose walked to, but no one was at home. She decided to catch it. She called the animal ambulance to ask what to do; due to bureaucracy the animal ambulance can't do anything. See; the Egyptian goose is an invasive species, also.. a big mistake people make is that the animal ambulance is there for animals; they are for animals being a nuisance. They are not the animal police. Yes the kind people working there also hate it.

So she decided together with the advice of the animal ambulance to put this caught goose out in nature. She made a facebook clip about it.

The next day she suddenly got a lot of messages. 'hey crystal, I think you are viral about some goose thing?'.

The 'owners' of that goose... found out their goose was missing. They hatched this goose 'quacky' which is illegal. According to them this goose is a very important member of their family an no one can sleep now because this crazy lady steals geese. Ring camera images are shared with texts like 'this vile animal thief'. And the thing in the title. Friends/acquaintances of 'Bleppy' (the owner of quacky) started to send her that she should die and be raped and kill herself.

The next day Crystal brought out a long facebook message

I think this being on facebook is important. See; they both love animals and both suck. Bleppy is maga, crystal believes that vaccines cause cancer. Crystal is really lucky that she looks white enough. But enough of the rape and death-threats were of course about how she deserves it because she is a gross tree-hugger animal loving hippie and wait... wasn't this about caring for a goose??

Crystal offered to help the family to look for the goose where she let it out and they accepted that. She directly got told that she needed to die during the search by friends of Beppy. She went home with her daughter. Her son kept searching. Pictures during were made of her 14-yo son and posted online to make fun of his 'manlyness' by friends of Bleppy.

Quackly has never been found.

I kinda just wanted to share this weird tea; but also like... where is the line in animal rescue. Like 'quacky' is an invasive species. You can keep it as an pet if you register it and make sure it can't reproduce. Which did not happen here. But I also of course understand adopting a sad gossling.

Discussion Petition to stop Peapack, NJ from gassing geese to death next month

The mayor and town council have voted to have the USDA cruelly gas the geese in our local park. So many of us love the geese and have created a petition and Facebook group to try to show the town officials that we want the geese to live. Dozens of people were at the town hall last Tuesday to offer options and we’ve volunteered to clean up the poop since that’s the council’s main excuse for killing these majestic Canada geese. Any help with the petition or publicity is deeply appreciated!

Hope that's the right flair.

Hi, r/goose- I'm having to do something I hoped I'd never have to when I got my goose over 6 years ago: find her a new home.

She's a brown Chinese Goose, and is bonded to a Khaki Campbell drake.

I've reached out to ASAPUtah, but I want to make sure I cover all my bases. Does anybody here have suggestions for places that would take in a goose and a duck, or know of anybody in UT that would want them as pets?
