Update on ā€œbrother abandoned dogā€ post

It’s been a hell of a weekend! As I posted a few days ago, my 21 year old brother has an animals hoarding problem and recently abandoned this sweet 4 month old German shepherd to go try to win his girlfriend back. Well he won her back and now he’s angry with the entire family for getting in his business. He’s especially angry with me for going back and rescuing the cat. It’s interesting he doesn’t give two sh^% about the puppy…he has not asked about her once! Not a hey, thanks for looking after her, hey thanks to making sure she’s well cared for. Nothing! He declared he’s moving away a few hours with his girlfriend and is done with the family.

Last night he returned early from his trip with his girlfriend. They showed up to my house and threatened me, said they would call the cops on me, etc and demanded I return the cat ASAP. Mind you, these animals were left in deplorable conditions! This poor puppy was being shoved into a kennel full of her own urine and feces. The cat has no fur left on its body due to flea infestation. It’s not a good situation and I’m at the point where I hate that I got involved. But I couldn’t let the poor animals suffer anymore. He does not want the dog, said he doesn’t care about the dog and only wants the cat. And only wants the cat because supposedly this was the last animal they adopted together before they broke up. Good lord.

Anyway, please meet Nova! She is officially my dog and will live out the rest of her life with me. I’m crowdsourcing right now to friends and family to get her essentials while I continue to battle my own legal drama with my ex husband. I will need to get her fixed soon so that she does not have any puppies. Luckily my idiot brother did get her shots.

In her short few days she’s been with me, she’s learned what a dog toy is, what a walk is, what the sand at the beach feels like on her paws and got to experience a pup cup for the first time!

I chatted with a rescue on here after the last post and they weren’t able to verify their non-profit status so I pulled the plug and decided to just keep her here with me. Other people inquired as well but after everything she’s been through, she absolutely needs a stable, loving home. Everyone says I’ve saved her but will soon come to realize it was her that actually saved me. ā¤ļø the cats are coming around to her but my youngest cat still hisses occasionally.

If anyone has any advice about potty training her, please let me know. I normally utilize a crate the appropriate size while potty training and taking out and using lots of snacks. However this poor girl suffered abuse so badly, she will just wet inside her kennel and lay in it. Because that’s how her early life went. She does enjoy snacks and has gone potty outside successfully a few times but I can see this might be a bit of a hurdle for her due to anxiety and stress.

Edit : can remove if not allowed but I made a tiny list of essentials for her if anyone wants to help baby Nova get situated. Definitely not required and can remove link if violates any rules of the board but these are handful of things I’ll be trying to get her in the next month or two. Most made it to send to friends and colleagues who have asked about helping her since I announced her adoption. I’m a marathon runner so Nova has some active days ahead when her little legs get stronger.

Hello! This is Queso! We adopted him in July from a local humane society that had him listed as a ā€œLabrador mixā€. We ended up getting him DNA tested and, surprise! He’s 40% GSD! šŸ˜‚

I’ve been doing a some reading online about the breed, as this is our first time having a GSD and we had never considered the breed before, but I wanted to see if anyone had any helpful tips/advice/comments for training, behaviors, etc.

I posted a picture of our new girl, Sheena a couple weeks ago. So far she has been the most incredible addition to our family. She has imprinted so heavily onto my wife. Yeah, she likes me too, but the level of adoration and devotion she shows to my wife is amazing.

Anyway, the point of my post is we don’t really know much about GSDs in general. She was adopted from our local humane society and was described as a Shepherd cross. She is most definitely not a purebred GSD but it’s pretty clear she is mostly shepherd. She is approximately 14 months old and weights 62lbs.

But what sort of shepherd? I’ve been reading about show lines vs working lines, west German East German, American, Czech, etc. the various coat types, on and on.

If anybody out there has any insight on her I’d be very interested in hearing it. Thanks.

Owner disclaimer: Just love this thread and figured I’d contribute with a post rather than just silently appreciate the community. Super great network for ideas, training and grooming tips from a ton of different perspectives. Thanks for all the help so far!

Herding Ball

Does anybody know where I can get a hard plastic herding ball larger than 14ā€. My girl is obsessed with it but has already done serious damage to both the Jolly and the Virtually Indestructible.

The Virtually lasted about two weeks until she managed to get a tooth sunk in and gave her some leverage…..

Advice First time dog owner

My fiancĆ©e and I (26) were given the opportunity to adopt a 5 year old German Shepard (Gunner) due to his previous owners living situation changing. My fiancĆ©e has some experience with dogs earlier in life but I have never had a dog or any pets for that matter, so i’m looking for advice from yall.

He’s very well mannered, doesn’t bark a lot, is good on a leash and is potty trained. He’s also good around kids and occasionally barks at other dogs while on walks and knows some basic commands like sit. He is having an issue acclimating with the cat we have but i’m expecting that to fade with more time.

We’ve only had him for about 24 hours so i’m just looking for tips or recommendations for anything whether it’s training, food, treats, toys, beds etc. anything is appreciated. Thanks.

Working line or show line?

I got my girl a few weeks ago, and she's 8 months old. I'm mostly wondering what to expect while training, and what I should focus on. She's a fast learner, she does like to play and for 8 months I'd say her self control skills are impressive. Any tips would be greatly appreciated while I raise this beautiful girl!

Question Enrichment ideas

Hello GSD community! šŸ–¤šŸ¤Ž
Meet my Nova girl! We rescued her from a humane society January 2026! She is 4.5 years old and has a crazy amount of energy, always. For meals we rotate between scatter feed, snuffle mat, destruction box feeding, the rolled up towel ā€œgameā€, as well as hand feeding her dinner through training. She normally goes to the dog park 2-3 times per week to play a ton of fetch, and goes on runs with my partner about 2 times per week. As I mentioned before we do training sessions with her realistically 2-3 times per week as well. We are currently working with her to teach her to ā€œclean upā€ and give her a job around the house. All this in addition to random fetch sessions at our place as well. We will also occasionally take her on long leash walks in larger fields.

Some days we are still struggling to meet her needs- and we know this because she is a demand barker! She will let us KNOW if her needs are not met by being the most sassy pup, and it is frustrating- some days we feel like we’ve pulled out all the stops and it’s still not enough. We are looking for some new ideas to provide enrichment for her and mix up from what we usually do. Also open to hearing any ā€œjobsā€ your pup has around the house to get some ideas as well!

We live in a decent sized house with a fully fenced in backyard if this helps at all. Also, she is very treat and ball motivated. I’m happy to provide anymore relevant information if it is helpful!

Thank you in advance and please feel free to share photos of your pups as well:))
