Pikes Peak German Shepherds

Hello! I am looking for anyone that may have purchased a puppy from the breeder in the title. I have two rescue GSDs, and would be interested in possibly going the breeder route in a few years for my next dog. It would have to be a VERY responsible breeder though.

Has anyone had experience with this breeder? How was it?

Advice on handling insanely strong prey drive?

• Upvotes

I have a (highly likely, waiting on the dna test to come back) 9 month old shepherd/ shepherd mix that we recently rescued. She’s a primarily outside dog, and already knows the commands drop it, leave it, and stay, pretty well.

However our current issue is that her prey drive is off the walls when we try to go for walks. The entire time, she’s got her nose to the ground tracking something, attempting to chase birds, squirrels, cows, cats, etc. she’ll even go after bugs, and rocks I’ve accidentally kicked.

we’ve switched from a collar to a harness to help mitigate the choking aspect when she tries to bolt after things, but I’m still getting physically dragged on walks, just trying to keep her from getting away from me. In which case, the commands she knows will work for about ten seconds and then she keeps going after whatever it was.

Because of where we live, getting a reputable trainer to come do a home visit isn’t feasible, and work makes going to one difficult as well. Does anyone have any advice for successfully managing this at home? We already play games like fetch and find it regularly to try and tire out those skills but it doesn’t seem to have any effect.

Advice Help please!

Long story short. My girl is still a puppy (14 weeks now) and in full land shark velociraptor mode. I’m looking for the best chews/bones/teething options. She doesn’t really seem to like the Kongs and other conventional chew toys. She gets bored with them after a minute or so. I’m looking for advice on other options that last a long time and keep her interested while also helping her during her teething phase. She basically chews on everything other than what I want her to chew on. lol. What has worked for you? Any suggestions appreciated.

This is Promise. I think I have posted her here before when she was a bit younger. She came from a fairly bad home with her previous owners when I got her when she was around 10-12 weeks. Very malnourished, nearly a skeleton and covered in flea and bug bites. I wasn’t looking for a pup at the time, in fact the opposite, was looking to adopt an older GSD. But when I found her I couldn’t not take her. I knew I could give her a good home.

She is probably the mouthiest GSD I have ever owned. Drives me up the wall some days. Love her death. All in all though she has been coming along amazingly well. And I’m very proud of all her progress and her. She is not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but she is a great girl.

Really just wanted to share some pics I liked I took the other day when out and visiting family.

Hope you all have had a great weekend.

So, when do they calm down?

He has been doing this for 30 minutes solid. Its a bit tongue in cheek. I grew up with Shepherds amd know they are high energy but he suddenly has way more energy then usual and is being picky with his meals. He has just turned 8 months old so im guessing its the beginning of the teenage phase?

Advice Feedback on their play?

Ludo is 10yrs old and Milo is 12 weeks. He’s been with us for a month now. We’ve managed their interactions heavily up to this point and today is the first day they were allowed to just be loose together. I am aware that Ludo is trying to control him a bit but he keeps coming back for more. They played until he could barely stand and she was begging for her kennel.

GSD puppy habits.

We have very recently got a German Shepard puppy, he is just a day of 12 weeks/ 3 months. We have 30 years of experience raising gsd pups. Pups until elder, and this little guy seems to have a habit none of our past pups have. About 3 times now I have caught him do it. If I don't pick his mucking business up in time (not his wees) I found he slowly licks it, eats it or tries to play with it before swallowing it. And if I catch him doing it he runs away quickly, but I haven't shouted at him or tried to correct him for it or anything along these lines. So if his first reaction is fear when I see him do it, I don't know if his original breeder tried to correct him with it. If I walk into another room for a few moments, he will do it quickly and quietly. As much as I am trying to house train him, and we are having succession in this since he does most of his business outside now. This is a habit none of my past pups or dogs have ever had. Is it normal? How can it be hygienic for me to get my face close up to him for play and kisses, affection and all these things?

Built these two over the last few weeks. Rookie is my german shepherd, and Sunny is a golden retriever I got from the internet. Each one took about 2 hours to cut, fold and glue.

Still improving them, so I'd love honest feedback. What would you change? The legs took me forever to get right.

Advice To spay or not to spay?

Thumbnail

This is Iris, I’ve posted her once or twice before I believe. We got Iris when I was 10, I’m now 18 and she is 8. We always talked about getting her spayed but it never happened because it was expensive and we were careful about supervising her around other dogs. Now, I’m at college and my dad is older (60 now.) And he has trouble keeping up with her energy these days. He keeps saying we should get her spayed and it might help, but our vet said since she’s older it’s more expensive and more risky.

So.. to spay or not to spay?

I went to a new Vet and the tech was like they never saw such a small GSD. She is 15 months and 62lbs and has been that weight forever, she is very active.
I was curious to know what do owners think the weight range should be?

Advice for Elbow Dysplasia with Age

Post image
63 Upvotes

Our GSD Milo is going to turn 6 soon, looking for advice on how to adjust his activity for age with his elbow dysplasia (and concerns with future hip dysplasia). He’s had this elbow issue his entire life, multiple vets have told us to not do any surgery. He doesn’t limp, never shows pain, runs hard, but he swings his paw out with a weird gate, so much so his nails are longer on that paw.

Couple years ago we were told his hips x-ray show signs that hip dysplasia could be a real issue one day. Hasn’t showed up yet thankfully. We’re on omega-3 and Dasquin + daily.

Looking for advice as we start to get into the older years. Started to limit fetch, more walks and sniffing than hard running. Try to get him to swim much as I can. Just want to be proactive!

(Note - Luna our lab will be 8 soon, best friends)

Question Is this aging? 9.5 yo female wakes up at 3-4 am, walks around, and comes back up

Thumbnail
3 Upvotes

Our German shepherd sleeps in the master room with us. Our door is slightly ajar, but with a laundry basket blocking it (so I can hear the kids if they need help).

Every night, my dog noses or paws the door open (either easily or with some force) to walk downstairs and then comes back up either immediately or with a detour to lie on the couch.

I'm not as concerned when she goes to lie on the couch, but lately she just comes back up after walking around. I'm worried that it is not due to her patrolling, but rather cognitive decline. I'm worried it's due to her aging (needing more bathroom breaks or earlier signs of dementia?).

I take her to go potty some nights when I hear her.

Anybody with senior dogs experienced this?

Highly considering rehoming my dog but heart is torn on the choice

My (ex) boyfriend and I got a puppy 3 years ago on the condition that he would be the primary care taker of said dog. The pups name is Quila.
He of course swore up and down that he would step up and do everything that needed to be done, since he was the one who wanted the large dog and was the one who worked from home.
For the first year of the pup life my ex was very excited about Quila and involved her amd his everyday activities, in hindsight I think this made her very codependent. As far as training, walking and creating routines and structure it was all left to me because of it were up to my ex there would have never been any rules. I spend most of my day at work, and my hours are long and I have late nights.
Things were never really a problem because my ex was always at home she was constantly taken out and looked after. However, since i was the one creating the routines, doing all of the training and taking her out on my days off quila bonded with me more. The relationship turned and as things were crumbling down Quila became even more attached to me since my ex was no longer mentally present with us.
We broke up earlier in the year, but continued to live together for most of the year. He completely fell off on doing any care taking for the dog and all of the responsibilities fell onto me. With that, quila and I bonded even more.
This is where my struggle comes:
In the past 6 weeks, my ex is out of the picture, my senior dog was put down and I recently moved.
There’s been a lot of changes so I’ve been trying to give her some grace but I feel like I’m just not enough.
She was very well behaved and would occasionally get into/chew things up but never anything crazy. However, recently she’s going crazy. I can’t leave the house without her destroying something, anything. I don’t leave things out and I consider my self a clean organization person but somehow she finds a way to open doors and drawers and destroys everything on sight. I tried leaving her in the create (she is create trained) but she started destroying the create and chipping her teeth. I have tried getting her calming cbd treats and other calming treats put into puzzles for enrichment but it’s still not enough. I take her on long walks and make sure I get her to play a lot before I leave in the afternoon and it’s still not enough. I stopped leaving her in the create because of her teeth but she’s just destroying my house. She keeps peeing on my bed and I feel like I’m loosing my mind. I can’t just stop working and I don’t know what else to do. I feel like nothing I do is enough, I feel like such a failure because I don’t know what else to do. I don’t want to rehome her but I also feel like I’m not providing what she needs here, and I don’t know if me keeping her is selfish or the other way around, would rehoming her be me giving up?
My Ex is in no condition to take her, I’m pretty sure he’s fallen into alcohol/drug abuse so he’s not an option.
I don’t know how much of this behavior is normal or when I should call it quits with quila. I really don’t want to but I feel like I’m out of options.

How different are working line vs show line personalities?

I have a 6.5 year old working line GSD and he's as advertised for the breed. Extremely intelligent, intense, protective and clingy.

A YouTube dog trainer I hadn't seen before popped up on my feed and was talking about different breeds and he really made it seem like there is many times a massive personality difference between working line and show line GSDs. He almost made it seem like show lines are lovable golden retriever type dogs. Those of you who have or had both, what has been your experience? Thanks.
