Discussion I hate myself for putting off this movie for so long.

Ok so for the month of October I am trying to watch 100 movies (no life I know) and I just watched my 80th movie, 28 days later, for the first time ever and let me just say that this movie is a masterpiece. I can’t believe I put this movie off for so long and just refused to watch it just because it’s a zombiesque movie. Genuinely one of the best horror movies ever and I don’t even care if that’s recency bias.

Discussion A Nightmare On Elm Street would make a better streaming series than Friday The 13th

Now don't get me wrong. I think FT13 as a series is a cool idea but I also feel it is limited in scope to where it can go in future seasons. As very little is known about Pam Vorhees prior to the series, that's the main focus right now until she's killed off and Jason really gets going (which everyone watching is mostly there for).

Now consider the amount of lore that can be built around A Nightmare On Elm Street. One of the coolest ideas IMO came from 'Freddy vs Jason' where all the children from Springwood were quarantined to a hospital and drugged into dreamless comas so they couldn't accidentally bring Freddy back. Imagine a prequel series based around that backstory alone, with the parents' decisions to essentially have their children locked away in order to keep them safe. I think that in itself is just one of countless ideas writers could run with when getting involved with dreams/nightmares and Freddy.

Again, I'm not saying that FT13 doesn't have a ton possible world-building ahead of it, I just think NOES has a lot more possibilities, especially in the day where FX teams could make dream sequences look absolutely terrifying just on their own.

EDIT: I only "spoilered" the FvJ plot point due to it being the Halloween season atm and I'm sure a lot of non-horror people are hitting Reddit for horror movie suggestions right now,

Discussion Do you guys feel like people are way too harsh and judgmental when it comes to horror movie characters making dumb decisions

• Upvotes

Do you guys feel like people are way too harsh and judgmental when it comes to horror movie characters making dumb decisions.

Look, I get it sometimes horror movie characters do make really dumb stupid decisions that are annoying, but you cannot expect a person to make rational decisions when they are frightened out of their mind it’s easy to say a lot of the things of what you could do in that situation sitting in comfort of your home.

Hidden Gem The Dark and the Wicked (2020) is an overlooked masterpiece

I don’t know if I’m overlooking something but imo this movie isn’t talked about remotely enough.
This is a masterclass in horror.
It feels unnerving and creepy from the first frame on and does so till the very end which is one of the darkest endings I’ve ever seen.
The sound design is phenomenal and it’s just overall very scary.
If you haven’t seen this yet, go watch it.
I just did and now i have to go to sleep with the lights on…

Discussion I am still obsessed with Event Horizon

• Upvotes

I’ve watched this movie at least 5 times, yet I consider re-watching it anytime I stumble upon it on streaming services.

This movie simply captivates me. The perfect blend of sci-fi + horror, with that unparalleled aesthetic of late the 90s/early 2000s. It feels like the setting of Alien meets the technology of The Matrix. Amazing performances from the whole cast too.

Anyone else feel similarly? I see mostly positive discourse about it on here. Guess I just can’t get enough of this movie.

What are some of the most romantic horror films?

I love a lush, sumptuous romance in a horror film. Shock and terror grow beautifully out of seeds of passion. The perverse thrill of being scared is an almost libidinal thing. Your pulse rising, you gasp and scream, you sigh and relief, you laugh a little, it’s awkward. Horror and eroticism and romance sprung from the same visceral well. Tragic… or heartwarming… or sweet… or disturbing. So many different ways to take it.

Some of my favorites are:

Return of the Living Dead III (very tender, doomed young love)

Candyman (there is a certain carnal element to the way Helen comes to “surrender” to the titular ghostly suitor)

Bram Stoker’s Dracula (so luscious and passionate in every way— when we see the monstrous form of Dracula with Mina, it’s so grotesque and yet it almost feels tender)

Any one have any other recommendations?

Rewatching Maximum Overdrive tonight.

I forgot how absolutely insane this movie was LMFAO. It's got me torn between thinking about a modern remake or not. On one hand, it could benefit from modern technology but on the other hand, you simply can't replace this cast. Thoughts?

Just watched Dream Warriors, I really loved it!

I binged the first three nightmare on elm street movies, frankly all of them are bangers but I wanna give special attention to dream warriors for just how insane and creative it is. Also the social commentary about how mentally ill teenagers are treated was still really poignant. Like the mom thinking her daughter just wants attention while she’s clearly suffering, or how they shove Kincaid in the isolation chamber whenever he questions anyone’s authority.

The effects were just incredible. Snake Freddy????? Tiny little stop motion doll Freddy??? STOP MOTION FREDDY SKELETON???? This isn’t even mentioning Nancy, I really wish more slasher sequels actually did something with their final girls like this!!! She’s just such an absolute boss and I love how much you can see how she’s matured since the events of the first movie.

My only issue with it is Freddy’s backstory, which I feel is just kinda outdated and in poor taste. Did they keep that in the future movies?

Recommend Should I watch Hokum or Caveat tonight?

I've seen Oddity, which had some genuinely unsettling moments and was well done, but overall I felt lukewarm about the film. I'd like to give Damian McCarthy another shot. In your opinion, what's the better film between Hokum and Caveat?

Recommend The Woman in Black 1989

I posted this last year, but am again, because I want more people to see this hidden gem of a film.

While y'all are familiar with the 2012 film starring Daniel Radcliffe, many people still do not know that an earlier adaptation was made in 1989 by BBC television and aired on Christmas Eve.

It was a huge success, but didn't air again until 1994, around the same time it was broadcast in America on A&E, which is where my parents taped it off of. I remember hearing it from my bedroom (not good soundproofing in my childhood home) and being terrified by the sounds coming up from the tv.

The screenplay was written by Nigel Neale, the man behind the Quartermass films, and it was directed by Herbert Wise.

While the 2012 version definitely has more money behind it, making it more polished and better looking, the 89 version doesn't bother with special effects and relies on its creepy atmosphere to keep ratcheting up the tension. This version is more grounded, less gothic, and it makes a huge difference in scare quality.

It's a movie that stays with you after you've turned off the television and gone to bed.

It can be hard to find, but is generally available on YouTube and Amazon for rent.

The Cobwebs Channel has a pretty good non spoilery bit on it.

Horror films with industrial/nu-metal soundtracks

• Upvotes

As a horror fan who also likes industrial music this is a match made in hell for me. I have already listened to the soundtracks of:

- Resident Evil (2002)

- Freddy vs. Jason (2003)

- End of Days (1999)

- Queen of the Damned (2002)

- Saw 2 (2005)

What other soundtracks should I check? If they're from the late 90s and early to mid 2000s, much better.

Thanks and happy Halloween in advance!

Discussion The original Evil Dead movies go hard with the puppets

I saw some of the newer ones, and no disrespect to them by any means but this puppeteering on Evil Dead 2 is next-level. The first film got buckwild but this is something else.

Is it anywhere as convincing as what could have been done with 3D animation and maybe 10-15 years time? Not at all, but its still cool to see what could be done at a different ratio of computers to human effort. Very pleased, and definitely going to watch this again.

Sally Hawkins in Bring Her Back is the most terrifying horror antagonist in a long time Spoiler

Every scene she’s on screen your skin crawls. She commences her gaslighting campaign against the older brother almost immediately and never lets up until she drowns him in a puddle. Crude, obvious, and blunt sadism, like fucking someone in the eye socket, (thanks, The Sadness) doesn’t scare me half as much as emotionally sophisticated sadism, like the kind this character perpetrates. She just exudes a deeply unwholesome and repulsive aura. Her willingness to harm children, her ability to play the cool aunt you can drink with and the responsible adult with any authority figures with the power to stop her, her spotless record and careful positioning of herself to prey on vulnerable children, her clever tactics like weaponizing the boy’s physicality against him and acting like she’s afraid of HIM, her careful demolition of the one good thing these two damaged kids have in their lives: their love for each other. It’s all hideously believable. The film is not just about the emotional realities of grief, but in my view, about how abusive parental figures turn children against each other and tend to scapegoat one in particular. You feel like a helpless child under the thumb of an abuser just watching her. What’s most frightening about her is that beneath the black magic genre trappings are very real truths about what grief can do to a person. Toni Collette in Hereditary(a somewhat comparable performance and a character that also could only have been written by someone with an abusive parent) is definitely scary, but she’s fundamentally a victim of the real villain of the film, the grandmother.

Favorite final girl and why?

This is a topic I’m extremely interested in (I have another post about least favorite final girls) so I wanna hear what you guys have to say about it! Is this an excuse for me to gush about my favorites? Yes, but I also wanna know who’s the most consistently favorited on this sub. Here’s just a few of mine!

Sienna Shaw (Terrifier 2 and 3): She’s where my final girl obsession started. I love her warrior outfit and the fact that she’s super into cosplay. That nerdy side of her is one of my favorite things about her, but I also love her relationships with her family. Especially her brother and her cousin. She’s a genuine comfort character for me because I know that no matter what horrors she goes through she’ll always get up and keep trying.

Kirsty Cotton (Hellraiser): She’s smart enough to solve the puzzle box and she’s not afraid to curse out demons, what’s not to love? Also she’s very outwardly flirty with an active love life without it defining her character. She also does some straight up out of pocket shit to save herself. (I tend to prefer final girls that aren’t defined by virginity)

Stretch (Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2): I was in love with her from her very first scene. Her voice!!!!! She also has a really unique profession and a much more active role in her story than a lot of others. I also like how she tends to default to fawning whenever she’s in trouble, and how that shifts throughout the film. Plus she’s just stylish as hell!

Nancy Thompson (Nightmare on Elm Street): She’s got one of the toughest slashers to deal with and her way of fighting him in the first film is so clever. I love how she learns what she has to in order to survive! Though honestly her appearance in Dream Warriors is what made her one of my very favorites.

Megan (Jason Lives): Frankly I just love how she’s actively into Tommy and is clearly the one leering after him instead of the other way around. After 5 other Friday films where the guy is always the one persuing the girl this was a great breath of fresh air. I also love how she drives around in a crazy hot rod like she’s an action star. I also really like Ginny from part 2, especially when she goes at Jason with a chainsaw.

Discussion Who are the best couples in horror?

The success of Obsession had me thinking about how often horror has terrible "couples." You usually need this from a writing standpoint because it allows you to create an intimate villain or a killable character that adds weight to the story.

So to flip that on its head, what are movies that have legitimate good and compatible couples?

My top 10 horror movies of all time:

1) The Exorcist (need I say more?)

2) The Omen (original - sorry, Shriver is no substitute for Gregory Peck)

3) The Changeling (my favorite ghost story)

4) Haunting of Julia (not to be confused with Julia Fields - this stars Mia Farrow. It can be hard to find due to copyright battles - you can try Internet Archive) - also called Full Circle.

5) Hereditary - pretty macabre, but very scary

6) Autopsy of Jane Doe

7) Halloween (I still love this movie. Rob Zombie's remake is not bad, either).

8) Pet Semetary (the original)

9) The Conjuring

10) American Werewolf in London (not really scary, but really entertaining)

I organized an AMA/Q&A with actress & modern day Scream Queen Maika Monroe. She's known for her leading roles in Longlegs, It Follows, The Guest, Watcher, Hot Summer Nights, The Hand that Rocks the Cradle, Reminders of Him, and lots more.

The AMA post is live here now in r/movies for anyone interested in asking a question:

https://www.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/1xfv8o9/hey_reddit_3_im_maika_monroe_longlegs_it_follows/

She will be back at around 6-7 PM ET today to answer questions. I recommend asking in advance. Please ask there, not here. All questions are much appreciated!

Her new movie, Victorian Psycho, premiered at Cannes earlier this year and is out in theaters everywhere November 13th.

Trailer: https://youtu.be/sDiFol_2j2I?si=oVGQL6ovSF-vQt0n

VICTORIAN PSYCHO follows an eccentric governess whose arrival sets off a bloody string of strange and deliciously disturbing events. What follows is a gruesome parade of savagery, butchered bodies, and increasingly grotesque acts of violence.
