Tried my luck waiting at my local Apple Store today since I didn’t have work today, they didn’t have any so I figured I might as well try it out since I’m there.
I was apprehensive initially from all the negative posts and the whole crackgate going around but I want to try it firsthand to form my own opinions and after trying it out for about 8 minutes, I knew pre-ordering the Duo was the right choice for me!
Folded format: My hand size is 6.5-7, so basically average female-sized hands and the Duo fits perfectly in the palm of my hand. I love the size when it’s folded, it’s perfect for one hand and a lot of times, I find myself having to stretch my fingers across my 17 Pro Max.
Unfolded format: Basically the size of an iPad mini and its not bad using two hands with it. I love how versatile it can be folded and the photos online of it semi-folded exaggerates how compact it is - you can see everything perfectly still and the split keyboard is clutch.
Weight: I’ve always opted for the Pro Max because bigger screen is a must for me so I actually found the Duo to be lighter than my 17PM, my 17PM has the Apple Techwoven case on and I still found it heavier than the Duo. I typically use Casetify cases so the weight for me is something I’m accustomed to. I’m typically on my feet (RN) at work so my phone is usually in my back pocket or front pocket of my scrubs and there’s times where I leave my phone at my desk so the added weight helps me quickly realize if I left my phone.
Camera: It’s not the best but I find it passable for the things I take pictures of - I’m lucky enough that my brother has his 18PM so I can always just use his whenever we’re out at restaurants for food pics. Travel-wise, I’d bring my Nikon so there’s no need for the phone and again, I can always borrow my brother’s so it’s not a problem for me personally.
Matte Screen: I personally am a fan of the look of the matte and the texture of it - it sounds like a weird quirk but sometimes I find the regular glass screens to be a bit sticky/hard to tap across whereas the matte finish is smoother. I do have concerns about what would happen if something was to spill but I figured it’ll be a habit I have to fix of not putting the phone on the table while eating, etc.
I had a chance to try a coworker’s Samsung Fold 8 and honestly, it just felt cheap whereas the Duo felt solid and premium to the touch (I mean, it better for $2,000). Overall, I’m impressed and as someone who has been waiting for a foldable iPhone option, I can think of so many uses for it:
Multi-tasking for the screen. The option to use the Pencil is great especially if I see something neat, I can quickly open the Duo and take a sketch instead of wishing I had my iPad Pro to draw. Finally being able to watch a downloaded Netflix or Crunchyroll show with family/friends during a plane/train ride without having to lug my iPad. Split View finally allows me to watch a YouTube video in a viewable size while keep up with all the drama in the workgroup text.
TL,DR: Tried in the Duo in store and already love it!
