Software Authors, Hardware Creators, etc: Understanding the difference between "Being a part of the community" and coming here to hawk your wares.

"Hawk your wares" means to sell goods or services, often in public, sometimes using loud or persuasive methods. Definition and Usage. To hawk your wares is to sell or attempt to sell something, typically in a public place such as a street or market, often by calling out to attract customers or using persuasive speech.

After we vet a creator (the usual check by virustotal) we give them a choice.

  1. The weekly Creators Update Thread

Every week the automod creates this post at Fridays, 8am PST. This is really meant to be an introduction to the community. This is where you lightly announce your service or product to our community, and with some persistence and luck get involved in the day to day answering questions for the community, giving sound advice, or tech assistance. Essentially building up your "Street Cred" here in the community. Where you can solicit testers, or feedback, make people feel empowered that you're listening to what they want. Becoming one with the community.

  1. The "One Shot" post.

Too often I'm seeing many creators jump straight into a one shot post. As moderators, we log and catalog your "one shot" to the community in the software Wiki. You might get 10 replies at the most, but most of the posts I've seen are not carefully crafted posts with videos, screenshots, and some really compelling reasons why people should use your stuff.

Other times I see posts so poorly worded, or "Free" but it's not "Free" and our community will call you out on it. Vague pricing or just Ai vibe coded shovelware who's juice isn't worth the squeeze. We see this stuff DAILY.

Understand that ONE SHOT means you only get to do that post one time. You only get ONE SHOT at a first impression, and I see so many creators that don't treat the one shot it is. If you were instructed to read this, reply with, "Remove the Brown M&M's" Do you really want to do one weak post, that scrolls off the front page into obscurity? Or you you want to engage, earn trust, and be considered a valuable asset to this community, and make a triumphant post where the community comes out in droves to support you?

Moving forward, this will be the new text we send creators when they reach out to us. Actions matter, conduct matters. People will see if you're here to be a part of us, or to simply use us like a billboard. How you treat this subreddit will be reciprocated back at you. Act accordingly.

Help Finding a Song Song suggestions

I love karaoke but I fear I suck at it. I'm an 18 year old female and I've been told I have a good voice. My thing is I'm a theatre person so I'm used to showtunes and that's usually my go to. However when I'm in public that's not usually something available or people want to hear. I'm looking for good pop or rock songs that I could potentially add to my book. I'm a soprano who feels more comfortable in head voice than chest if that helps. Any suggestions are gratefully appreciated

General Discussion Karaoke at a birthday party ideas?

I'm going to be having a 21st birthday party at a separate venue (Airbnb). I love karaoke, and my friends and I often sing at our own gatherings, but this party will be joining two groups of friends together (12 people in total, including myself). ,The second night, we certainly to be drinking, so I figured this would be the best night for karaoke. Do you have any ideas for games or variations we can use? We have a karaoke machine that hooks up to YouTube or just Bluetooth speakers. I want everyone to still be able to sing full songs seriously ( so no games that involve impressions or fragmented songs), but I also don't know that EVERYONE will want to sing, let alone a lot of songs. Mostly, I'm looking for ideas that let people have their moment to sing but still keep it engaging for others, as well as allowing people to choose songs they are comfortable with but also have some sort of element that would entice others who are more uninspierd. I don't intend to spend the entire night on this, maybe a few hours. Thanks!!

Custom Edit Suggestions for Trumpets by Jason Derulo?

I would love to sing Trumpets by Jason Derulo at karaoke for the girl that I'm dating, but the line about " Is it weird that your bra reminds me of a Katy Perry song" doesn't fit for her because she doesn't wear them.

My best idea so far is to replace bra with lips (as in the ones on her face for the perverts), but I want to know if there's anything better!

Help Finding a Song How to impress the kids?

I'm (52M) a fan of singing karaoke for crowds of strangers, especially when I travel for work, but I just found out the conference I'm attending next week will have about 100 youth in attendance, ages 14 - 17, and one of the evening events will be karaoke. The songs I normally sing (new wave, grunge, punk) are popular with people my age or a little younger, but I have no idea what to sing for that generation. I'm a baritone, which limits my options quite a bit since the male pop singers I'm familiar with are tenors. Any ideas to bring the house down?

General Discussion Singers who sit instead of standing to sing

Just venting. Tonight we went to a new spot for karaoke to see friends and our favorite KJ. Two different singers, who did not appear to be disabled in any way, sat in their seats while they sang. Is it just me or is this kind of rude?

Equipment Looking for hands-free mic for karaoke

I apologize if this is in the wrong section. I recently bought an Ikarao S3 for casual home use. I am not a fan of the microphones that came with it and feel like they have to be held at the perfect distance and angle to actually capture your voice. They’re usable, but I’ve been thinking about getting another set to use. I’d really like something hands free as well because my teen can be doing their crafts while singing, or I could be tidying while singing. I just feel we would use the system a LOT more if we had a hands-free mic option.

I don’t know anything about mics really, but some of the ones I’ve seen have body packs and I feel like that’s too much for our casual use. I would like to stay at $100 USD or less for a set of two, but would prefer around the $50 range. Again, this is for very casual use, but if they sound horrible then we’re not going to reach for them so they have to at least sound ok for that price point. I realize I may be asking for too much here, but any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

General Discussion Karaoke Couples FTW!

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

(Hoping this dodges rule #1, since it’s only 5 seconds long and we’re not singing in it?)

I love meeting couples who karaoke together, and one of my great joys over the past two years has been having a girlfriend (and now fiancée, as of a month ago!) who LOVES going out to karaoke with me.

A video of me singing “Open Arms” in my Bumble profile helped her swipe right. She was immediately enthusiastic about coming out to watch me, although she said “I love that you sing karaoke, but I could never do it!” I know singing in public isn’t for everyone, so I never asked her to.

A few weeks in, she announced (unprompted) that she wanted to try a duet with me. Soon it was two or three duets every night out, and within a few months she was doing solo songs she’d never even practiced, which is not something I feel comfortable doing! Lately there have been times I’ve had to talk her out of hitting a third venue in the same night, which blows my mind. And within an hour of me proposing, she was exclaiming “Oh! We HAVE to have karaoke at the wedding!” (swoon)

A year and a half ago I started KJing, and that’s become another favorite couple activity. She’s my roadie, helping with setup and teardown, and my cohost, running the queue while I emcee and handle the sound board. She’s also the life of the party, chatting with people and pulling them onto the dance floor for upbeat songs. And ever since I got the crazy idea to build a helper app for karaoke singers, she’s been my biggest cheerleader, even on the nights I’m coding instead of singing.

Share your karaoke couple story with us... and/or your favorite karaoke couple duets!

Karaoke Hardware Karaoke machine advice (UK based)

A while ago a friend let me borrow a fairly large, beefy karaoke machine with 2 wireless mics that had reverb and various settings on it. We would run youtube karaoke videos on my tv and sing separately through the karaoke machine - it worked great, but the machine was on loan and I had to give it back.

My tv is a samsung frame that goes through an optical out to rca converter into an old cambridge amp. That amp outputs to two bookshelf speakers.

I have a Halloween party next week and I don't know what the best thing to do is here. There are karaoke machines with wireless mics on amazon for around £50-150, but from reading online it seems these just have an "echo" control, which is different from true reverb and not good? (although I dunno if this will matter as much if we're not playing the music through it, just singing?) - they also seem physically tiny compared to the one I had on loan, so I'm also not sure how powerful they'll be or how good they'll sound... Although possibly the tech has just come along a decent way, the other one seemed fairly old.

The alternative is to try and set up some sort of mixer with wireless mics onto my amp, which seems like the "right" way to do it, but I can see that being a bit of a headache to set up and possibly require troubleshooting. I only have parties 3-4 times a year and it's a group of drunk friends, maybe 15 people max taking part.

Is a cheap machine the way to go? Can anyone recommend one?

Karaoke Software Finding people who love singing karaoke with complex vocal chain

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hello, Everyone . I always curious and wanted to find people who love singing karaoke with complex vocal chain. Have been finding people and community who seems similar to me, singing karaoke with complex vocal chain, for years but still have not found any. Most people I found tend to be using complex vocal chain for post-processing mixing and mastering, not the real time karaoke performance. I know that karaoke is all about fun and game, but for me who love the best sound quality and effect , I can't get enough of those performance that will be amazed.

This is what I recently come up with for recent karaoke session . It may not be perfect yet since I just try practicing to sing this song. I use the Mixbox plugin to make a real-time vocal processing with my cheapest mic in my Mic Arsenal ,$20 Samson R21s, to show that any decent mic will benefit from this kind of Vocal Chain.

Please have a kind discussion with me. I feel so lonely in Karaoke world and wanting to meet someone who love this kind of Karaoke like me.

This is silly, daughter (5) really wants a microphone, so I thought a karaoke machine would be fun for all the family.

Why does it seem like the £24 toy is too cheap.

It's only twice the cost of a 90s kids toy echo microphone.

Maybe the £200 one is too much for a year old to play with.

Should probably get the cheap one and buy the more expensive one in a few years when everything costs more and toddler has grown up a bit more.

KJ Advice Accessible karaoke host set up?

Thumbnail

Has anyone had success operating a professional karaoke set up completely non-visually? I am using with KARAFUN, but I am running into problems with getting the lyrics to display on a separate screen without losing access to the voiceover screen reader. I can connect my iPhone to a television via screen mirroring, but when I enter full screen, I lose VoiceOver screen reader access completely, and have to completely exit and reopen the app before I can get it back. Also, I can connect to my Bluetooth karaoke machine via airplay/audio, But when I do so, it appears I lose the mirror connection to the television. I am interested in hearing the experiences of blind people who have had success operating a professional karaoke set up around these obstacles. Thank you.

General Discussion Is singing at a higher Octave more pleasing to the ear than a lower Octave?

I've noticed that I get better responses when I sing songs in a higher Octave than a lower.

Is this generally a true thing? The song I've been singing is House of the Rising Son and I try to emulate a slower, deeper voiced Johnny Cash than the higher pitched Animals

One Shot Beam Lyrics (Android): Real-time vocal suppression, sing-along tracking, casting, karaoke mode, guitar mode

Download link at bottom of post

Real-time vocal suppression.
https://youtu.be/mr8mWt5AMZk?si=HyPCGOYY0hpbpiH5

Currently, this works over cast only due to Android on-device audio constraints. It can also suppress Percussion, Bass, or the fourth source Other (ie keyboards/synths/guitars/instruments). My phone is a Samsung Galaxy S24 from 2024. Older phones may struggle to run this suppression.

There is also a delay over cast as the video needs to be packaged up and sent over the network meaning that even to change the song can take 5 seconds or longer. It's not a perfect solution, but it's real-time processing and works with any song.

Sing-along scoring mode
https://youtu.be/DZHK_4PdelQ?si=5q-DFRTCU1uAPlVn

The cyan/blue marker shows my attempt at singing along to the song, and hitting the golden target markers to score points.

(works best with external speakers from device ie bluetooth speakers, but does work over cast or built-in speakers as well) (In settings you can see if calibrating to your voice improves tracking but hopefully it works right away for you.)

Guitar mode
https://youtu.be/wKUGfEP9p_4?si=j2CfeAjewwOGPLNZ

(music/chords/tabs/lyrics) all synced. Also auto-searches current playing song from wherever you are playing your music to get the first set of chords/tabs that google finds.) (Should be a lot easier for most devices as there is no source analysis/suppression happening here)

In summary:

  • Real-time vocal suppression (currently Chromecast only).
  • Sing-along tracking and scoring, including same-device multiplayer.
  • Works in real-time alongside music already playing on your phone
  • Standard karaoke mode with synced lyrics, on-device or cast to your TV. Tap the lyrics to change to this karaoke view.
  • Long-hold lyrics to float them over other apps

Download link:

The app should go live in a week or two hopefully. If you would like to try it in early-access please join the Google group. Link here:
https://groups.google.com/u/2/g/beam-lyrics-testing

The download link is in that group once you join it. However, there might be a waiting period for the download link to work. Anywhere between a quick refresh and a long delay (Google are slow at syncing group members to be allowed to download the app)

Some more info: the lyrics are retrieved from https://lrclib.net/, if there are timing issues, you can click the timing icon in app

When casting with vocal suppression ON, you need to leave the app open, otherwise the cast quality will degrade.

There are a few permissions to accept when you open the app:

-Notification access is required to read from, and control, the media player.

-Share screen is required to analyse the on-device audio & cast.

Any feedback, issues or questions, please let me know.

Thanks
