Hey /r/keto!

We all have questions. Questions about Ketogenic foods, how our bodies react to ketosis, what we can and can't do, how much of whatever to take in, whether or not we're missing something. We know you've got 'em - so, give 'em to us!

Ask your questions here to help yourself and everyone else who's in your situation and might benefit! And conversely, all you /r/keto veterans - let's do our best to help people here. There are no dumb questions!

Success Story Day 15 of strict keto. Newly diagnosed type 2 before the switch. Here's what's changed for me.

So im on day 15 of strict keto and I thought I would make a post about everything that has changed for me since I started.

Bit of background. I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and given metformin which I still take. About 4 months ago

But the biggest changes have come through diet.

I dont own a scale so I have no idea what ive lost.

1) No swelling or pain in my feet. Its just. Gone. I have cerebral palsy that affects my legs and everyone always blamed that. Nope.

2) i no longer snore or drool in my sleep. (GROSS. I know. But there you have it.)

3) I had a bruise on my hip for months that just...took up residence. I dont even know how i got it. Its gone.

4) I had a chronic fungal condition called tinea Vesecolor. It caused fungal spots on my chest and torso that I would treat. But it would always come back. They are gone completely. I had a flair up of a few small ones mid keto transition. They went away without treating them and haven't come back.

5) I dont lose clumps of hair in the shower or on the brush anymore. It used to look like tribbles all over the floor.

6) I sleep through the night without issue. No waking up with anxiety like I have been for years.

7) ive always had sensitive gums. My dentist told me thats just how they are. I no longer have any pink on my toothbrush. This was a shock because ive had it for as long as ive had teeth. Lol.

Forgot to add. No more TMJ pain. My jaw used to pop and crack and hurt like crazy at least every few days. It doesnt anymore.

Last edit because I cant believe I forgot this! I have had tendinitis in my wrists for years. But I always figured it was because I spend so much time writing and sewing. I just took pain meds and wore a wrist brace.

The pain is gone. I havent stopped doing anything or changed my behavior. But I dont need pain meds anymore and my tendinitis just doesnt flare up like it did. Crazy.

Why do yall think nuts and nut butters are so much more compulsive compared to other forms of fat?

• Upvotes

I cannot speak for everyone, but I know for myself and many others, it is not difficult to down a jar of peanut butter or a bag of nuts (see this thread), yet I know there is absolutely no way I could eat the same amount of calories worth of ghee, beef tallow, or even butter probably in a single sitting let alone in a single day (would be ~20 tbsp of ghee!). I know nuts and nut butters have a decent amount of protein, but still, most of the calories is fat (source).

Also I'm not sure if I could have 20 tbsp of plain butter in one sitting since I don't eat butter that often, but I imagine I would probably feel the same way. I think I would probably even feel the same way with olive oil as well (20 tbsp ~ 1.25 cup!). Personally I think it is because our bodies are not designed / evolved to be eating peanut butter and nuts generally in such large quantities, because, in nature, you would have to go to great lengths to consume such a large number of nuts. Anyone who has had pecans from a tree knows what I mean; it is not an easy process to extract the nuts from their shell.

Personally I think our bodies should be sending us some sort of signal to such a large quantity of nuts / fat in one sitting, but something is deeply wrong that basically bypasses our body's ability to signal for us to stop so it can actually properly process the food. Like even if I had 2 tbsp of ghee, I would definitely get a signal from my body to stop eating more...

Curious to hear others' thoughts. Is being able to eat such a huge amount of fat without getting nausea or any response a sign that there is a deeper problem at play?

Other Going back into ketosis?

• Upvotes

Is it my imagination or is it easier to go into ketosis the second (or more) time around?

I had to pause for medical reasons, then go back onto keto to test a theory while I still have the cardiac monitor on me. I noticed that things happened much easier and much faster the second time around (except for weight loss, ugh) and I'm not sure if it's because my body knows what to expect or because I know more about what I'm doing this time, or it's just my imagination.

Anyone also experience an easier time entering ketosis the second time around?

I also haven't had any keto flu this time, but I barely had that the first time.

One thing keto improved for you that you didn't expect

When people talk about keto, the focus is usually on weight loss. But I'm curious about the changes you noticed beyond the scale. Did you experience fewer cravings, better focus, more stable energy or something completely unexpected?

How are people managing to eat 2 or 1 meal a day?

• Upvotes

Hello everybody!

I am happy that I found the keto diet.

I feel like I am just learning how to eat.

Im on my fourth day. And already I feel a variety of symptoms that have subsided, especially glucose spikes and dips. Im clear headed full of energy. I feel brand new!

My biggest challenge in the beginning was finding how to fill my protein needs. As I need about 180g daily, since I work out and am active.

I just did an IF for about 16 hours and it felt amazing.

Now when I had my first meal, I felt as if I can just have another meal if at anycase. I no longer feel the need to keep eating all day.

After my first meal I felt super stuffed and havent even reached my halfway diet needs. I was going to eat alittle carbs after the protein and the fiber. But I didnt even do that.

I just ate 3 dates to break the fast and thats as much carbs I feel I need for the day.

So considering this, how are people putting in 3 meals into 1 or 2 daily meals because my fasting window is just in a couple of hours and I dont even feel hungry!

Store-bought nut flours

I'm looking for where I could buy nut flours that are not almond flour. Someone in my household is on a medical keto diet so we need to keep ketones in a certain range and almond flour causes his ketones to tank. Usually I just make pecan "flour" at home by grinding up pecans in my food processor, but I can't get it very fine. It works well for most things I make, but some recipes I just need something not so course.

Does anyone know of any stores or websites I can buy nut flours that are actually finely ground? I have looked on Amazon and see pecan and walnut flours but can't tell how course or fine it is and the reviews weren't helpful.

Tips and Tricks First moment of weakness, iso words of encouragement

I'm hugely motivated to lose weight. I used to train a lot, spent years in gyms until I tore off my ACL. One year waiting for surgery, 1 year physiotherapy, then life got in a way and I gained 20kg in the process. I obviously had to stop most physical activities, and I also WFH so that doesn't help. The time has come to get back in shape because I can't look at myself anymore.

I'm new to keto and never been on any diet before, it's only been 2 weeks. I'm keeping track of what I eat and stay in a 500kcal deficit and under 20g of carbs. I eat wholefoods, it's mainly steaks, bacon, eggs and veggies. I dont eat seafood. I've lost about 8kg so far and I know most of it is just water, but this is the only thing that keeps me motivated. I still have about 11-16kg to lose so that's at least 3-4 months of hard work I guess.

I miss my old food so much. I can live without pasta and rice but I would kill for a slice of freshly baked bread. I miss lidls apple turnovers. I miss chocolate, cereal and fruit. I miss milk and milkshakes. When I go to Lidl I literally have my eyes closed walking through the first aisle, it's fruit and bakery - all the things I love and not one thing I can eat. Is this ever going to change?

Are there any keto friendly foods/hacks that can help me go through it? I don't care if it's dirty keto, I just don't want to go out of ketosis at least until I reach my target weight.

How long did it take you to become "fat adapted"?

In the past I've done keto and when I was adapted I remember feeling limitless energy, even when doing intense exercise. I'm going back on keto again and maybe in a different spot healthwise than a decade ago, I'm a few weeks in and feeling better overall but exercise still feels difficult.

I figure I need to get deeper into ketosis and become more "adapted" again but also at one point I was so adapted that I could go off keto and the limitless energy would come back after 1-2 days low carb, or even after 20-22 hours of intermittent fasting... so it just makes me wonder.

How long did it take you before you could do moderate to intense cardio or strength training, and not feel like you're low on energy?

I do believe my electrolytes are fine atm.

Cheap meals on Keto?

I tried it before and was very pleased with the results. Sadly these past 2 years i had fallen in to a deep depression and didnt care for my self image and binge ate most my weight back (i was around 240 now im back to 289) and am looking to diet again. My financial situation is dfferent so i only have about 100 to 150 dollars a month to budget for Food. What are some budget keto meals/foods you could suggest and stuff to snack on. I was big on beef jerky and almonds for snacking back then but im sure theres other options. Im not a picky eater so any suggestions that are viable on a budget, im all ears. It should be noted im generally not crazy about cooking so simple stuff appeals to me more

Food and Recipes Coffee help?

Pre-keto I'd have maybe a quarter cup of milk in my coffee. I decided to switch to the coffee mate french vanilla zero sugar creamer, and I was loving it until recently. I kind of can't stand it now? When I did keto years back, I remember putting cream in my coffee and I didn't love it, so I just put milk and used it as my carb allowance. I don't particularly want to do that this time. I want my carb allowance for my food.

So coffee lovers, what do you do? Is there a better way to add cream to coffee?

Help Twelve weeks to my first marathon. What are the best protein ready meals for someone on keto?

I don't know if this is the right space to share this since it's a bit all over the place, so sorry about that. I'll be participating in my first marathon in around 12 weeks and I'm training like it's the only thing that matters, maybe because after some ups and down in life it might as well be but that's not the issue here.

Thing is, I'm struggling a lot with eating right and staying consistent with keto while also dying of exhaustion and everything else that's also going on. It's gone so bad that the other day someone unknowingly stopped me from eating toast and peanut butter when they asked if I wasn't doing keto any more, lmao. This also led me to a bunch of my friends sending me a ton of ads for those meal delivery services and while I know that they mean well and are trying to support me in whatever way they can, a lot of them aside from maybe one or two like cookunity and some others don't even offer keto options or don't appear to label them properly.

I don't know what to do without giving up and taking a break, maybe, but as I said before that's not something I'd like to do at all. Maybe just need a push in the right direction and some motivation as well. Thanks!

Help Day 9 terrible neck pain - hormones?

I am on my 2nd attempt at keto. I am also taking low dose HRT. The first time I tried keto, I made it to day 6/7 and then had what I can only describe as frozen shoulder - took me to urgent care the pain was so bad. Here I am attempt 2 about a month later - I’m on day 9 and just like before I am having major left shoulder neck pain. It’s like I can’t even turn my neck or move and I do feel a lot of tension at the base of my neck. I am going heavy on electrolytes - make ketoade and use salt and lite-salt heavily, I do an electrolyte drop that has magnesium.

Is starting keto somehow causing this neck/shoulder pain…like hormones shifting suddenly or muscles cramping due to hormones? It just seems odd it happened the same way two times in a row. I want to stick with it, but the pain is so bad.

What changed for you on keto that had nothing to do with weight loss?

I'm curious because weight loss seems to get most of the attention, but I wonder what other changes people notice. Did you experience fewer cravings, better focus. more stable energy or something completely unexpected?

What's the hardest part of staying keto that people who've never tried it don't understand?

For me, it's nor just giving up carbs, It's how challenging it can be stay consistent when cravings hit or when everyone around you eats whatever they want. People assume it's just about will power, but there's more to it than that. What's the hardest part for you that the other people just don't seem to understand?

Other I don’t even feel cravings for sugar/carb foods anymore

SW: 278

Started this journey in July and am down 32 pounds. I love that I no longer feel cravings for sugary foods or bread or pasta. I don’t feel hungry after having smaller portions. I feel satiated from normal portions of meat and vegetables. I love not feeling stuffed and gross after a meal.

My husband and I started walking around the neighborhood after dinner again now that it’s not so hot outside. I was worried that after not doing our walks for a few months that I would be winded and exhausted but I kept up and was hardly out of breath at all by the end.

Sometimes I have dreams that I’ve cheated on my diet and in the dream I feel bloated and gross. Then I wake up and I’m like oh thank god lol.

We’re going on a cruise next July and if I can keep up this average of losing 1.5 pounds a week, I think I’ll be looking hot for our vacation. 😆😉

Other Keto for Depression

How long did it take for anyone dealing with depression? I’m a month in with a few inconsistent days but optimistically feel like the fog is lifting. Hoping this is the answer I’ve been looking for since early teen years. Thanks for sharing any thoughts/experiences!

Did you notice any face changes

What benefits or negatives did you notice on face? Skin, eyebags, jawline, etc.

Besides the obvious weightloss, is there any benefit from ketosis on face skin youth?

How long did it take you to see any benefits

Food and Recipes I used to over think keto but now I don't

I used to overthink what recipes to do and what other things I should do to keep on track with keto but now I don't. I used to make those awful keto cakes and almond flour cupcakes and stuff but now I eat clean keto. It's amazing how different I feel when I eat clean keto.. like avocados and chicken and minced beef and eggs and ham and cheese and all the really good things in life.. I reckon eddie abbew would be happy with me at the moment.. haha ..

Tips and Tricks Advice and motivation for weightloss?

I have gained a lot of weight in this past 6-7 months and now is finally time to do something about it. I am 30yo woman with pcos, 163cm and 70kg. And I am looking for some advice and motivation for weightloss 😊

So my fellow (pcos) women, how has your weightloss journey been on keto? How much do you eat, like what is your calorie deficit?
And how fast did you start dropping weight? I know this is kind of weird question, but I am just so uncomfortable in my body at the moment. I don’t feel like myself at all and have been avoiding mirrors for months. So I am just asking to get motivation to keep on going on this journey.
Or you can share just any weightloss / keto advice that you find important (especially if it’s pcos related).
