Introduction

Hello Masters Builders, and welcome to the official r/lego Open Forum post. This is your opportunity to tell us what you think of r/lego, make suggestions or comments about the rules, ask open questions about the community, or share whatever else is on your mind.

Note that this post is for discussion of r/lego itself. If you have a general question about something related to Lego, make a post instead of asking here.

It's October already!

SpOOky season has begun! Or as some Lego fans like to call it, "MOCtober" is here. This is my favorite time of year to build, because it means getting out the Halloween sets and starting those pre-build plans for the Winter Village. Autumn is also a great time to attend Lego shows, so check out your local Lego Groups to see if they are participating in a Convention, Festival or Hobby Show nearby.

Let us know what's on your mind this month. What have you always wondered about? What rule do you want clarified, or changed? Do you have any suggestions you've been trying to find a chance to make? I won't promise that we will make the change(s) you want, but I will commit to explaining the reason we have the rules and policies we have.

I just disassembled my Scooby-Doo Mystery Mansion (big mistake) and I am flabbergasted at how many brown bricks just came apart like this. Not even sure what to do to supplement the pieces I'm missing now.

MOC Thousands of LEGO bricks. 78 Tarot cards. Here’s the Seven of Pentacles.

Thumbnail

1.6k Upvotes

This is our family project, Bricks of Fate. Our goal is to recreate all 78 Tarot cards using real LEGO bricks.

No CGI, no AI, no 3D rendering. Just genuine LEGO bricks!

We build everything ourselves, photograph each scene, and end up with what might be the cutest Tarot deck ever :) And the best part is that all the original symbolism is beautifully preserved — sometimes it even becomes more obvious!

I think it’s turning out ridiculously cute! :)

Question Got my BF his dream set (Rivendell) for Christmas, but now I’m second-guessing myself. Need advice!

Hi, Lego fans, my BF of 2 years (we are in our 30s, lol) is a huge LOTR and Lego fan, and his dream set is Rivendell. I’ve already bought it and I'm planning to give it to him for Christmas this year.

He brings up the set occasionally: he’s genuinely worried they’ll discontinue it before he can get it, he compares all the LOTR Lego sets, concluding that Rivendell is still the best etc. But every time, he ends up saying something like, "...but I’m not really planning on buying it because I have no place to display it."

I usually reply with something like, "Well, you could always buy a nice shelf or a cabinet to display it if you had it, right?" But when I say that, he seems almost... annoyed?

What’s going on here? Is he just a bit down about not being able to afford it right now, so he’s downplaying it so he doesn't feel as bad? I really don't want to ruin Christmas.

Also, just for context: he won't be getting much else from me. My usual Christmas budget for him is around $140, but I managed to snap this set up for $370 while it was on sale. I don’t live in the US, and $370 is roughly 16% of my monthly income - just to give you a feel for how much I spent. That said, I can totally afford it since my living expenses are very low and I have no debt. I definitely don't regret buying it!

But my other worry is that he might feel some type of way about me spending so much on him. I definitely don't want him to feel guilty, and I don't expect him to do the same for me, since we both usually stick to much smaller budgets. Won't that make gift-giving... unbalanced?

My other worry is that even though he really wants this set, maybe he’d prefer to buy it himself since it’s his dream set. Would you care if you got your dream set as a gift? Would it make a difference to you?

I just want him to have a good time and his experience to be nice.

My local Pick-a-brick broke out the orange mix for Halloween, so at first I made a small Pumpkin, and then I knocked this out over the weekend. It's a mix and match of different minifigures, both left over from sets and the Halloween themed build a fig station. Any constructive criticism is always welcome. šŸ‘

MOC Tutorial #3 is out: Hidden Waterfall Trap, a study in rockwork, translucent waterfalls and a hidden booby trap

Thumbnail

The third build in my low-cost tutorial series is now published. Tutorial #1 was about foliage and #2 about lake water. This one goes vertical: a rock cliff with a waterfall, a tribal guard on top and a pirate climbing up from below.

The main techniques are the rockwork and the waterfall. For the cliff, I use random gray slopes, plates and bricks, with a few flat areas left on purpose so the stone doesn’t become a single mass. The waterfall is stacked from translucent pieces and connected to a stream of blue tiles above and a pool below, so the water reads as one continuous flow. The booby trap is built into the rock, so it stays hidden until it’s triggered. The foliage on top reuses the layering approach from the first two tutorials.

Which technique would you want in Tutorial #4: buildings, trees, boats, something else?
