Throwback Throwback to the Sexiest Moments Ever from the MTV VMAs

Thumbnail playboy.com

Since 1984, the MTV VMAs has hosted legendary pop culture moments, from the iconic to the salacious. Feuding R&B divas Monica and Brandy. Reggaeton titans Tego Calderon, Daddy Yankee, and Don Omar bringing the genre to a U.S. stage for the first time. Playboy cover girl Karol G throwing it back in neon pink. A$AP Rocky grabbing Rihanna’s ass (which she didn’t mind) before they got married. Diana Ross greeting Lil’ Kim with a, um, jiggle.

But who delivered the sexiest moments the VMAs has seen in 42 years of onstage antics?

Across several decades of VMA performances, Madonna returned several times to the classic wedding aesthetics. You can look as far back as the masc swagger of 1993’s performance of “Bye Bye Baby” to her first time ever taking the iconic stage with “Like A Virgin”, where she rolled around on the floor in a white dress, now married to the life of a superstar.

Britney Spears was only nineteen when she performed “Slave 4 U” at the 2001 VMAs. Against a jungle backdrop and opening the show in a cage with a live tiger, the pop princess of the moment (scantily-clad in a blue-green ensemble) and an army of dancers threw it back, twirled and strutted the stage.

Throwback 19 Years Ago Today: Britney Spears Released Her Magnum Opus and Pop's Ultimate Bible, Blackout

Post image
363 Upvotes

Charli XCX: Named Blackout as her favorite album of all time, frequently citing Britney Spears as a primary career inspiration and noting how the album's electronic, club-centric production influenced her own musical direction.

Macy Gray: Called Blackout "one of the best albums ever", sharing that she listens to it—specifically the track "Radar"—to give herself courage and energy before going on stage.

Jade Thirlwall (JADE): Praised Blackout as a "pop bible" and noted that lead single "Gimme More" is one of her favorite pop songs ever, stating that the project helped shape the sound of modern pop.

Adéla: Named Blackout the greatest pop record of all time, celebrating its production, self-awareness, and lasting influence on electronic pop.

Kesha: Frequently celebrated the album's legacy and its impact on the wave of electropop and celebrity-focused party anthems that followed in the late 2000s and 2010s

Slayyyter: Called the album "the blueprint for everything. For me, for everybody." In an interview with UPROXX, she noted that later defining eras of pop music—like Lady Gaga's—could not have existed without Britney paving the way with "Gimme More".

Rihanna: Expressed her love for the album right around its release, stating: "It's very European, it's very pop, and it's funky." She added that all the songs make you want to move and that there are "no boring songs on it—it’s just a good groove."

Marina (formerly Marina and the diamonds): Applauded Britney's inherent genius on the project, noting that "pop instincts are so ingrained in her brain." She pointed out that people don't give Britney enough credit as an actual songwriter and conceptual artist for what she built during that era.

Danielle Haim: Called the record "so refreshing for that time" and noted that coming off a series of meticulously managed, "prim and proper" eras, Blackout finally felt like "she was being herself and not letting anyone tell her what to do."

Britney Spears: Described it as one of the easiest and most satisfying albums she ever made. For its 10th anniversary, she told The Fader that "the magic of Blackout was actually pretty simple. It just wasn't so thought out. I just did what I felt and it worked." She also noted she loves the track "Freakshow" because "it’s sassy, and I love sassy."

Lets Debate! 🔨 Who is an artist that has "ruined'' their start in the music industry due to persistent pivots or poor management?

I'm making this post because i've been thinking about Dove Cameron's career trayectory so far. She has been releasing music since 2019 with blodshoot/waste as an ep, promises new music, releases new songs with the promise of an album, these songs end up as stand-alone singles.

The first truly baffling moment was when she deleted her entire discography right after Boyfriend blew up under the premise of "a new era". Lazybaby and We belong, you are missed to this day, rip.

On top of that, that era was never fully realized because she only released volume one of the ep, 8 songs total: Alchemical vol.1. Mental health was the reason she gave, she was in a total different headspace. Fine by me, makes sense, grace was given.

In 2025, she started releasing songs under the premise of a new album. Five songs total: Too Much, French girls, Romeo, Whatever you like and Hello, my old lover. With these songs it truly felt like she was finding her sound: lady gaga-esque and ballady all into one. I really like all of these releases and was really excited to see how they developed into a full body of work.

She usually says that her old music doesn't represents her and moves on (even for just 1-year old songs). She never dwells on old music, acording to her.

HOWEVER, she just announced her record and it has a 2021 song in it, posing as brand new, her most recent single Do the Math. WTF?? You can't excuse deleting music as "it no longer represents me",and then release a 2021 song as new. A song filled with math metaphors at that.

The album tracklist has 11 songs in it. None of the 2025 songs are in it, despite being some of her best. My only comfort is that When in Rome, her most recent, is in there. I LOVE that song. Title track Final Girl (which she sang opening for Dua Lipa) is not part of the tracklist. What is Columbia thinking?

On top of that, two more songs are already known prior to release: Inmortalize and Break Open. Both i love, but that leaves only 7 songs to be a brand new experience.

Do you know any other artist that has have such a messy rollout with constant pivots even before their debut?

Edit: spelling

Music Critique 🤨 I really don't get the hype around suki Waterhouse, believe me I tried?

So many of my friends adore her and went to her

concerts . They took me once while she was on

tour, and i thought it was incredibly boring. Her

stage presence wasn't good, and many times, she

sang off tune.

However, I really like the magical vibe of "good

looking," but it's just that . I didn't vibe with her other

songs or her in person. I feel like she doesn't have

the power or aura of a rock star.

Lets Debate! 🔨 If you replaced Olivia Rodrigo’s face with that of a wrinkly 90 year old woman, her boobs with those of a 3 year old girl, her ass and legs with those of an anorexic woman, and her feet with those of a gorilla, would she still be the Olivia Rodrigo everyone is crazy about today?

Discussion will olivia rodrigo's fanbase last?

DISCLAIMER: I love Olivia Rodrigo. Have done since Driver's License. Drop Dead will definitely be my top song and I think YSPSFAGSIL is album of the year no question. On top of that, I admire her balls for being unapologetic about her stances. Do not take this as me slandering her because I think she deserves a better fanbase.

All that said, I think a chunk of her fanbase, at least online (which I know is not a 1-1 reflection of real life), aren't as much fans of her as they are haters of Sabrina Carpenter and Taylor Swift. You open a video of the Unravelled tour and it's not uncommon for one of the top comments to be "Taylor Swift wishes she could do this!" or variations upon it. It's also not uncommon for Livie accounts to be the loudest when it comes to Sabrina Carpenter backlash (after the wine moms ad dudebros have had their fun). And I am not saying you have to be a fan of every artist in the world or even every pop girlie. But if your fave is on tour and your first thought it about another artist, you do have to ask yourself how much of a fan you are.

I think this part of Olivia's fanbase are trying to position her as the anti-Carpenter/Swift. The one who is In It For The Music, the One True Pop Girl who's just not like the rest. And I am not sure how long this can last. As Megan Thee Stallion said, "they're ot pro-you, they're anti-me".

I believe Olivia will go on to have a long and successful career, she's clearly only going from strength to strength. But I do wonder if this part of her fanbase will crumble away with nothing to sustain them, or worse, turn on her.

Throwback How Agnetha and Björn Turned Their Divorce Into ABBA’s Greatest Masterpiece | IN THEIR OWN WORDS

Thumbnail youtu.be
5 Upvotes

Aside from “Dancing Queen” and “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!”, “The Winner Takes it All” seems to be a huge favorite amongst ABBA’s core audience nowadays. Young folks sing their hearts out to it, make YouTube reactions and even bop their heads to what they would call “a sad banger,” not knowing the deep and painful history behind it.

The other day, I was listening to the audiobook of Carl Magnus Palm’s comprehensive “Bright Lights, Dark Shadows” and stopped at that pivotal point in their history where things were not going right, and it makes for a compelling read, as is all of the book. The boys were lacking inspiration and Björn was actively trying to spend more time in the studio to avoid dealing with Agnetha at home and their internal problems, which were now creeping into their studio dynamic. Not to mention they were also parents of small children, which complicated things even further as they faced a new journey as divorcees. And on top of that, you had the business represented in Stig and the different record companies like Polar, Atlantic and Epic that saw their best-selling interest in jeopardy.

I can relate to the heartbreak of facing a separation, breaking the news to my other half, shedding painful tears and dusting off. Still, I feel that the pressure they would’ve gone through is just simply unimaginable. One thing I can imagine, though, is how cathartic the recording of “The Winner Takes it All” would’ve been for both Agnetha as the vocalist and Björn as the lyric writer. How they’ve made peace with the cards destiny dealt for them. How it all made for one of their greatest achievements as musicians.

Discussion Do you think SZA will ever have another big hit?

Considering how her last album basically just came and went with zero hits and now she’s basically relegated to soundtracking shit like the Cocomelon movie, with SOS overshadowing everything, do you think SZA’s hitmaking days are already basically done? Or does she have anything in her still somewhere?

I Said What I Said 💁‍♀️ What Are Songs That You Think Deserved The Hate, Did Not Deserve The Hate, Deserved The Love It Got, Songs That Are Underrated, and Overrated????

Deserved The Hate

  1. Cleveland - Taylor Swift - As a person who grew up listening to Taylor Swift and has gone to her Reputation tour, I think her music has gone downhill unfortunately. I do think that if she takes a break, it is a possibility that better music come out. And about “Cleveland”, the lyrics just seem goofy in my opinion. I do not mind “goofy”, but this just did not hit for me. Also, why is she ready for Christmas in September??? 🤣🤣🤣 And I did hear a lot of arguments about her still writing about high school and haters while pushing 40. Like, she is happily married, why are we still writing about haters??? Anyway, you do you, me do me.

Did Not Deserve The Hate

  1. Ordinary - Alex Warren - I am not a religious person and I have been an atheist around 3 years. I am also not the kind of person who thinks about a song’s meaning. I listened to the song and it sounded deep and beautiful. At first, it felt kind of “Ordinary”, but soon, something just hit, and I ended up liking the song. I felt like the singer really put his heart and soul into the song. And I have heard worse songs  and voices than this.

Deserved The Love It Got

  1. Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana - I remember listening to this song during Covid and I was addicted to it. I actually like when there is yelling in songs. I do like hard rock and I would love to listen to more hard rock. I like the energy and the yelling. 🤣🤣🤣 I love that song because of how energetic and wild it is. I revisited the song recently and I fell in love with it even more.

Underrated

  1. She - Harry Styles - Oh my god, this song is a masterpiece. The lyrics are so interesting. It is like, he is imagining  himself being his inner self being woman and that is a really cool concept. The guitar solo in the end is unbelievably phenomenal. The song is also so different and jazzy. This song made me more of a fan of Harry Styles and made me realize that he is very versatile. He has pop songs, rock songs, and one jazzy song. I just love how experimental he is.

Overrated

  1. Nicole Kidman - Adela - I am sorry, but I just do not get the hype. I do not really like her voice and she just does not sound good in this song. Also, I hate the first line of the song. I know, that is not really a reason to hate a song but I am just not a fan of her voice in this song. Yeah, I like fun, and I think that songs do not have to be so deep but this song is just not my cup of tea. I believe Nicole Kidman approved of the song and you know, her choice, her life but if someone wrote the first line about my tribute song if I ever have one, I would get angry and it would turn into a controversy. I just do not want anyone writing about me like that.

Also, please put why you feel that way???
