I Said What I Said ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™€๏ธ Taylor Swift is too old to be this spiteful in her music

6.6k Upvotes

I cannot fathom that a recently married, soon to be 37 year old billionaire with a 20 year career would put out a song like "Cleveland!"

This should be beneath her.

I Said What I Said ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™€๏ธ So we all just accept that Taylor swift faked a country accent for 2-3 years

1.6k Upvotes

I love that everyone just accepts this. no debates or even argues. Not even swifties

no one even holds it against her. like โ€˜yep she was faking the yee haw thing to sell countryโ€™

she fully from Pennsylvania. No radio host ever said โ€œhow the hell you talking like thatโ€

no hate. I think itโ€™s genius and part of selling country. But I love how it disappeared completely and we just moved on

I Said What I Said ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™€๏ธ Miley has now had SIX consecutive flop album eras. How does she return to her Bangerz-era success?

The latest album looks to be a disaster.

There were some flashes of cultural success with Plastic Hearts (fan favorite) and Endless Summer Vacation (one single from the album) but otherwise Miley's career has gone straight downhill from the Bangerz era.

What should she do?

I Said What I Said ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™€๏ธ Sorry for her fans but Tate McRae isn't the second coming of Britney Spears

Britney gets a lot of stick but she can sing. Her real voice shows a much more wider vocal range than expected.

Tate McRae is a great dancer but she's more Paula Abdul than Britney or Mandy Moore.

I used to joke that she sounds like Gollum's baby sister.

I Said What I Said ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™€๏ธ Madonna is literally redefining what it means to be pushing 70 and she continues to fearlessly tear down our society's toxic age barriers. An icon like no other

For a pop star to deliver a culturally impactful album rollout of this caliber at any age is insane. For one to do it at 68 is simply unprecedented.

Long may she continue being unapologetically bold and redefining cultural expectations.

I Said What I Said ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™€๏ธ this is so satisfying sorry. The massive hypocrisy in favor of Olivia and the irrational hate instead of valid criticism for Taylor Swift is getting ridiculous

Both of these women have equally bad fandoms. But the stan culture is hypocritical. People performed this outrage over versions that don't overshadow new releases, accusing Taylor of trying to overshadow Olivia, when Olivia herself either didn't mind being overshadowed (by Tate Mcrae) or she didn't mind overshadowing Tate, who set the release date long ago

I Said What I Said ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™€๏ธ Why is Troye Sivan kind of flopping right now?

hes always been able to at least have some modest hit with each era

Youth, My My My, Rush, One Of Your Girls, You, Angel Baby,

I was super excited for this new era and was a big fan of his last album.

Sheโ€™s The Best and Party arenโ€™t really sticking for me. And it seems similar for others? How are you feeling about this album roll out

I'm from Slovakia and today one article account on IG posted a mini article about Adela, which proved my suspicions. Ofc no commoner from Slovakia could get extensive training she got, get to Dream Academy and have an international career. It has never happened before to that extent.

โ€ข Her father is a wealthy businessman Jan Jerga from company Penta (which was accused of controlling the state fund btw my country is so corrupted it's crazy)
โ€ข Her vocal coach was Olivia Rodrigo's coach as well
โ€ข She was able to train in Moscow, Vienna and London

My friends are artists, musicians, performers, drag queens. They will never make it on international level, because they were not born in Bratislava, because they are queer, because some are POC. Because they were not born in wealthy family. Because the government cut art support fund and artistic or LGBT+ organizations can only pay for projects from their own pockets. I'm sorry, this is so personal and I'm so angry and that's why I can't ever support rich white girl from Bratislava.

I Said What I Said ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™€๏ธ Midlife crisis album?

Is there an album that is clearly the artist having a midlife crisis or a late stage identity crisis?

Or an album that has all the symptoms of a midlife crisis?

I Said What I Said ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™€๏ธ i think itโ€™s time to have an honest talk about chappel roan?

okay so iโ€™m not here to hate on her or defend her blindly. i actually think there are legitimate arguments on multiple sides and the discourse has been really shallow.

i do agree that no amount of fame entitles strangers to physical proximity with you. the paparazzi industry has a long, documented history of causing real psychological harm. and her filming back as a form of documentation is arguably just self-defense in this modern landscape.

however, i also think that chappellโ€™s entire brand is built on parasocial intimacy. she has actively cultivated a fanbase that feels personally connected to her. thereโ€™s a tension in selectively invoking that closeness when it benefits you and rejecting it when itโ€™s inconvenient.

paris fashion week is a press-saturated industry event by design. attending it is functionally a choice to be seen. thereโ€™s a coherence problem when you participate in the attention economy on your own terms and then express outrage when attention shows up uninvited.

paparazzi are often working-class people doing a gig job. chappell is a millionaire with a massive platform. when she posts that video, the power differential is actually reversed. she can damage a photographerโ€™s livelihood. they cannot meaningfully harm her. that changes the ethics somewhat.

iโ€™m genuinely not sure where I land.

What are your actual thoughts on this?

I Said What I Said ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™€๏ธ What are pop choices you feel like are laziness being disguised as โ€œartisticโ€?

any pop moments you feel like are laziness disguised as โ€œartisticโ€œ.

so I love the Music, Fashion, Film songs so far

however I saw an interview where Charli said the under 2 minute time of Rock Music wasnโ€™t out of laziness but an artistic choice that felt right

and while I can totally see that. But imagine if an artist just said that but really there could be more effort into it. but I kinda feel the same way about the rest of the choices here. especially since brat this was such high effort.

look at Underscores. So amazing, imagine if she stopped half way thought Music and said โ€œitโ€™s done thats allโ€ but she kept going and made a masterpiece with an outro

I Said What I Said ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™€๏ธ We need women pop stars headlining halftime shows and carrying the next decades live-televised entertainment. Enough of men.

This Halftime Show debacle of starting with only three headliners, then suddenly adding more people, was one of the worst ideas.

The only performances that really carried yesterdayโ€™s show were Madonnaโ€™s and Shakiraโ€™s. I know Madgeโ€™s was pre-recorded, and thereโ€™s even gossip that she got upset after the last minute artists additions, when everything had already been planned around just three headliners, so she did the pre-recorded thing.

Even so, Madonnaโ€™s film did more than most of what happened on that stage, with Shakira ultimately saving the show at the end.

Bieber even looked like he was forced to be there.

I Said What I Said ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™€๏ธ What are your top 10 best pop songs of this century so far?

We've had a few asking for decade top 10s, I think it's time to rank this century for once instead.

I'll start:

  1. Britney Spears - Break The Ice (2007)

  2. Carly Rae Jepsen - Run Away With Me (2015)

  3. Charli xcx - Girl, so confusing (feat. Lorde) (2024)

  4. Black Eyed Peas - Meet Me Halfway (2009)

  5. Avril Lavigne - My Happy Ending (2004)

  6. Rihanna - Only Girl (In The World) (2010)

  7. Lady Gaga - Telephone (feat. Beyoncรฉ) (2010)

  8. Taylor Swift - Style (2014)

  9. Kelly Clarkson - Behind These Hazel Eyes (2005)

  10. Gwen Stefani - Cool (2005)

HM: Say It Right, Paparazzi, Brand New Chanel$

I'm surely forgetting some stuff

Sorry if my ranking seems a little biased towards 2000s pop music, it's just my favorite decade for music and I can't help but going back to it.

I Said What I Said ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™€๏ธ Why can some artists survive being a nepo baby and not others? Example: Gracie Abrams vs Stella Lefty

Stella Lefty getting so much backlash is satisfying

but itโ€™s interesting to note the line when โ€œnepo babiesโ€ are accepted.

Miley Cyrus, Lady Gaga, Gracie Abrams, Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande all come from wealthy background

while Gracie Abrams does get push back on twitter. she still manages to have a career without

i feel like the line is nepo babies are accepted if they: arenโ€™t pretending to not be it and if they are good.

Boston sounds like someone pretending to be poor? vs Gracie whoโ€˜s aesthetic is New England prep vibes

I Said What I Said ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™€๏ธ I want to like Troye Sivan more but he is making it SOOOOO hard

I really want to talk about Troye for a second here.

Specifically, Troye has been one of the better queer artists to release pop music in the past few years, yet it feels like he has no momentum, and any momentum that was there has come back to a screeching hualt. I think Troye showed he was somewhat in-tune with queer pop music with Something to Give Each Other, especially with Rush being played nightly at every gay bar, but his new song Party calls some of that credibility into question.

Simply put, this cannot be the best thing you have to offer. I know he and his team can write and produce much more interesting music than this. The beat is fine, but the writing is non-existent. I'm not sure if this is supposed to be a play on that Lady Gaga "Club, Club, Another Club" meme or what, but whatever he is going for simply doesn't work here. Even for a drunk club song this is borderline obnoxious. Not a fan of the spoken word thing he's trying to do with his voice either. I'm not sure if Swiftologist really did scare him into not wanting to sing, but the spoken word robs the song of any real rhythm or melody that would make one want to sing or dance to the song. Troye's voice is FINE. It's passable. Pop music is not always about who has the best vocals, but most often about who can present the best package of work, and plenty of successful artists have meh voices. Lastly, if you are gonna sample Madonna in any context, you best bring your A-Game. Very "Playing the Golden Girls on Snatch Game."

Ending with the music video, it's too much like Rush. The choreo, while probably not the same, has the same vibe and movements as the choreo in Rush. The medieval setting in the video, while interesting, isn't different enough to overcome the feeling of the video being Rush but at Medieval Times. Side note, I'm also surprised that Twitter was so scandalized by the ending of the video. We live in a world where Elitรฉ, which was much more graphic, exists on Netflix, the largest and most accessible streaming app.

TLDR, I really liked One of Your Girls and need Troye to write about more queer experiences into more upbeat, unique, and fun pop songs. They can even be sad! I just need something to sing to and has a good beat.

I Said What I Said ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™€๏ธ Pop songs or music videos which the artists weren't fond of

Whitney Houston was embarrassed by the music video of How Will I Know

Madonna hates the song Material Girl because it made people think she only cared about money

Mariah Carey hates the song Prisoner and prefers to pretend it doesn't exist. She also hates her music video for Vision of Love

I Said What I Said ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™€๏ธ Opinion: Swifties have became the music fandom equivalent to MAGA. Sadly there's no turning back

This is the think piece that someone needs to write.

I have never seen an artist's fan base be so unhinged, delusional and illogical while performing the most insane level of mental gymnastics when confronted with opinions or facts that aren't 100% favourable towards Ms Swift.

It's very reminiscent of the way MAGA behaves. Absolutely toxic to unbelievable levels.

How do you think they got this way? I don't remember them being this bad for most of the 2010s.

I Said What I Said ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™€๏ธ Stop labeling everything as Hyperpop and stop calling it cuntslop

This is a 2 for 1 After seeing someone labeling WGIA by slayyyter as Hyperpop please learn to differentiate your pop genres

Also what's up with the hatred towards songs by artists like chase icon, Ayesha, the same slayyyter pre WGIA get? The production it's intricate and fast. It's meant to be danceable. There is nothing wrong with lyrics about being young, pretty, rich, blonde, fashionable, desirable. It's not "slop" I hate that people call everything slop or generic these days

I Said What I Said ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™€๏ธ What is all the fuss about Kelly Clarkson's covers ?

I can recognize that sheโ€™s an excellent singer technicallyโ€”she has the range, power, control, and can hit impressive notesโ€”but the natural sound and tone of her voice itself doesnโ€™t feel particularly distinctive or interesting. So why do people make such a big deal out of it ?
