Discussion User/Post Flairs

When you join the community, you are asked to choose a user flair. You are also expected to tag vocal rating submissions with a post flair. The three main levels are “Beginner,” “Intermediate,” and “Advanced”. These descriptors are vague, and they may be difficult to assign to oneself. For this reason, the mods have decided to post this breakdown to help people decide what level they are at.

If you:
- Have been talking vocal lessons for less than a year
-Have never or barely been vocally trained
-Have never been paid to sing
-Cannot sing a note accurately after hearing it
-Do not know how to sing with proper breath support and physical technique
-Are not confident enough in your skill to sing in front of others

Then you might be a “Beginner”. Consider choosing that as your post and user flair.

If you:
-Have been taking vocal lessons for more than a year
-Have had some or a lot of vocal training
-Have never been paid to sing or paid sometimes
-Are confident enough in your skill to sing in front of others for no charge
-Can sing a note accurately after hearing it
-Can sing with proper breath support and vocal technique

Then you might be an “Intermediate”. Consider choosing that as your post and user flair.

If you:
-Have been taking vocal lessons for multiple years
-Are extensively vocally trained
-Have been paid to sing multiple times or sing professionally
-Are confident enough in your skill to charge others to hear you sing
-Can sing notes with perfect accuracy after hearing them
-Can sing with excellent breath support and near perfect technique

Then you might be “Advanced”. Consider choosing that as your post and user flair

We understand that you may have some overlap with the categories. It is our suggestion that if even one of the traits of a lower level applies to you, then you should consider using that as your flair.

Please comment with your suggestions for how to differentiate more accurately. We would love the community’s input on what should qualify as a beginner, intermediate, and advanced singer. This post may be updated in the future with these suggestions.

Is this good to post even tho it's lip synced (it's my voice im the one singing but it's pre recorded becuz honestly I cant sing full covers real time with zero errors while looking impeccable on camera lol) while singing this in real time I was obviously very haggard looking, so I decided to just lip sync it while decent looking but I think yeah it's obvious it's lip synced... Does that look terrible. Sht my posture is soooo bad. My background look shabby. Im so scared to post this in my real life social media where all my friends and family would see. Sorry if this might look like im phishing for compliments but I just need reassurance that im not embarrassing myself nfkdjdks

This is generally where my voice sits comfortably, I just feel like I’m missing something. What do y’all think?

Does my airy voice sound good or kinda cringe?

I stumbled upon this way of singing a while ago. It feels really comfortable, and more importantly, I kinda like how it sounds (aside from my overall singing skill level, but I’m working on that).

A few things I’m wondering:

  1. Does this sound like a healthy way to sing?
  2. Does it actually sound good, or is it just me?
  3. Could this turn into a bad habit I should avoid?

And also any feedback is welcome!

Does this sound at all sustainable, and how/where could I improve vs what should I keep (if anything)? Some of the higher notes were a little flat and too shrouded in distortion to come out clean and you’ll probably notice I lightened my voice to hit the high note.

I know I still have a lot to work on, but I just want to know what you think about my voice. Is it boring or could I do something with it?
(please ignore my guitar playing, I know I messed up the rythm)

Feedback - Intermediate Another clip from me…

Since people were so kind about my singing and playing on the last one, I did this today— original song this time.

A few people mentioned on my last clip that I’d gone into head-voice type register for one note and then did the same note in a distorted voice a moment later… so I put more head register into a section of this to give an idea of what it sounds like for me.

I feel like I’m putting on a silly voice by doing it and I tend to avoid using it for more than a word here and there, but I’d like to hear what other folks think about it.

I put a bit more of my guitar playing in this one, too, and actually used a mic, not just my phone!

Thank you everyone, the last post really boosted my confidence.

when i was younger, i was a pretty good singer: i was in multiple west end shows etc. i haven’t done any of that in over 10 years now, and i just don’t feel like i can sing anymore. i hate the tone of my voice/its character, and no matter if i am singing musicals or pop etc, i just feel like i have a not very good voice now.

can people offer some advice? im too scared to get lessons nowadays and i find it super embarrassing singing but i love to do it. Also, note that the vibrato in this video feels like something I have to consciously do, so i assume that this means im forcing it: when i was younger it just came naturally. It also sometimes trails off and just sounds like a goat LOL.

I will include multiple different clips in a comment thread, including a very short one of young me! I would genuinely appreciate anyone who listens to them all and advises/rates based on style!

be honest: i know im not good and im pretty pitchy, i just want to improve :)

EDIT: nvm i guess i can only post one vid! wont let me include others in comments LOL

Thanks for listening! Been enjoying singing for a long time but miss performing my songs. Trying to refine this sound and need some better earballs on it. This is only my first take, so keep that in mind. :)

Feedback - Intermediate Had radio play but still lacking confidence in my voice. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated

Hi everyone. I’ve kinda hit a wall with singing and have let lots of bad habits take over (vaping, drinking, not practicing). I’m a singer songwriter and last year a song of mine was played on the national radio, which most artists would be ecstatic about but I convinced myself they somehow just felt bad for me when they played it because honestly the mixing wasn’t great and my vocal technique even worse at that time. I can’t even listen to it because I hear so many imperfections. I even started doing live performances last year but felt so embarrassed by the song and my ability that I completely stopped singing this year and just keep hitting the vape and feeling sorry for myself because I’m in my mid twenties now and feel like time is slipping so i need someone to tell me bluntly to either pursue it or stop (which I know is ridiculous!)

My partner gives me great feedback but it feels like they’re just being nice and not focusing a lot on what i need to improve on. I’m super in awe of vocalists with a unique tone/timbre/colour and if i did pursue this i want to be an artist w a voice that’s memorable so before i invest in lessons i want to know its even worth salvaging to a professional level and if there’s anything memorable/interesting about my voice?

I know confidence is even more pricey than lessons so i need to work on that too really so maybe this is more of a vent haha but would appreciate any feedback and honesty
Thank you Reddit!!
