Discussion - J-Mod reply Truth and Reconciliation

Hey folks, Happy Friday and/or weekend!

Last week I shared some thoughts around how we can all create a more welcoming community, especially given that we're still looking forward to an influx of new players on December 2nd, but that was just a comment in a thread, in response to a one-off. It was also very much a "JMod weighs in" moment, whereas the beauty of community is that we all have a voice that should be able to be heard.

Today, I want us all to take the next step towards a kinder and better community. And I need your help.

We can all hope for something better, but the ability to make a positive change is truthfully within each and every one of us. All of us have agency. We can make choices and choose our reactions to circumstances. We can choose our words and our engagement carefully, even when difficult emotions arise. That's what I want everyone to focus on today.

It's fair to say that this community has undergone a series of collective hurts. Not just from Reignited, but from a number of instances over the years. We can ignore that hurt and continue as we have so far, or we can start to openly and properly talk about it.

We can speak to why we feel the way we do, and what others can do to help move us towards a kinder space.

Some of that may be things that we as JMods can do better. Some of it may be how members of the community interact with and treat each other. Since joining Jagex last December, I too have had many thoughts about things across the board, but today I don't want to make big statements. Today I want to just listen and chat with you. While I won't have answers to every topic, I may be able to provide some helpful context somewhere - and I will still be reading everything that flows through here.

It all needs to start with a conversation. With all of us listening and being curious.

With that said, I would like to open it up to each and every one of you (and yes, I mean you lurkers as well - if ever there was a time to get involved even nominally, this is it).

TERMS OF ENGAGEMENT

A few basic terms of engagement before we get started with contributing:

  1. Everyone comes in and leaves here with their dignity intact.
    • Respect is the highest virtue here. No one should be made to feel lesser just for having a diverging opinion.
  2. We have time.
    • You do not need to rush out an answer, there is no urgency. I'm not rushing off and will continue to monitor this thread over time. Take your time, compile your thoughts and we'd love to read them. Firing a hot take from the hip probably won't convey the nuance we're looking for today.
  3. We're not here to win arguments or convince other people to share our opinion.
    • The point of today is to create a shared understanding, not to champion a cause. Realistically, none of us are going to have our feelings swayed by someone else's opinion on the internet, especially taking confirmation bias into account.
  4. Stay Curious
    • If someone says something that you don't understand or agree with, try to dig deeper into understanding it, rather than rebutting it.
  5. Private and Throwaway accounts are fine.
    • Some folks will not be comfortable sharing their opinions publicly on their main handle, just as many people in real life are not comfortable to openly acknowledge their politics.
    • An individual's play- or comment history should not disqualify them from sharing their opinion, so long as it is well made, thoughtful and adheres to the ground-rules above.

The above notes are for this discussion today, the usual subreddit rules still apply as moderated by the volunteer team.

PROMPTS TO CONSIDER

  • What Perceptions do you have about RuneScape, its (in-game and social media) Community, Reignited, The Treasure Hunter MTX era, its sister and sub-communities or its very identity in gaming?
  • What Stigma do you feel you face from other individuals? How does it make you feel and do those feelings influence how you in turn engage back into this or other communities?

If you're feeling up for bonus prompts:

  • How do the above perceptions or stigmas influence the worries you may have? What are you concerned about that the perceptions/stigmas may mean or insinuate about yourself as a player, the community or the game?
  • What are you most hopeful about if we could address the above perceptions and stigmas?

Everyone is welcome to weigh in.
No matter whether you've been with us for 20 years, have just started new this week or have never played but are thinking about joining us in the months ahead, I'd love to hear from you.

Equally, I would also love to hear from you if you tend to spend a lot of time observing this community but are not actively playing RuneScape (perhaps you play another Jagex game or MMO). Or maybe you've wanted to join but have never felt entirely welcome? Please speak up today.

Please use Your Reddit Votes for Clarity, not for Point-Scoring

  • Please upvote posts that progress the discussion, even if you may have a differing opinion.
  • Please avoid downvoting posts just on the basis that you disagree with the points that the author raises, especially when it is a well-thought through post. If possible, consider avoiding downvoting altogether within this thread.
  • Give kindness and respect your upvotes and support - We don't need much more than that to start making a difference in each others lives.

The point of today is that we will all encounter opinions that we do not agree with. The aim is that we understand and respectfully engage with these opinions out of curiosity, not that we attempt to stamp them out.

A couple extra requests to help make your contributions more helpful:

  • Try to avoid generalizations.
    • Rather than saying "The X Community is Y", go for something along the lines of "when individuals in X Community Say Y, It makes me feel Z".
  • Be Kind
    • There are many ways of expressing an opinion - try to default to kindness rather than coldness.

What will any of this achieve?

Some of you may be wondering - what's the point?

Fundamental to moving forward in any direction in life is the ability to understand.

Firstly, understanding that others may not share the same opinion as yourself even if you share the same echo chamber.

Secondly, understanding why others feel the way they do.

Very often, our opinions of situations or people are coloured by our perception of them, and perceptions can be quite misleading. Learning more about the "why" can help us understand and speak to the real underlying cause, rather than the top-level response.

Sorry for the wall of text above, but this might be one of the most important discussions we have as a community, and I want to make sure we get it right.

With that said, thank you so much for reading this far - let's talk!

Tip/Guide I made tile packs for ED1, ED2, ED3, Sanctum of Rebirth, Zamorak, AoD, Raksha, The Ghrazi Blood Knights, and Arch-Glacor

• Upvotes

Good morning all.

I've decided to destroy my sleep schedule by pushing out a collection of tile packs I've created spending well over 20+ hours creating with the goal of lowering the barrier of entry to PvM.

You can find all the tile packs here (Reddit is giving me a formatting errors, I included a step-by-step tutorial to import on my google doc)

OR

You can find these and more on the wiki by clicking here

ELITE DUNGEON SPECIFIC TILES

  • includes full dungeon map pathing collision for ALL Elite Dungeons
  • includes surge/dive tiles for speedy movement
  • includes highlighted monster POI tiles to clear to open gates
  • includes boss aggression lines with some melee distance indicators where applicable as well as default boss locations.
  • includes safe spot tiles/safe enough tiles to mitigate mechanics on bosses. Such as Sanctum Guardian & Crassian Leviathan blasts, spawn tile indicators for Black Stone Dragon’s Black Hands, Tarakat’s Rift, Corpse Carrier and Bloat, The Ambassador’s blendor spawn safe tiles and Sinister Fragment spawns.

ED1 example 1 ED1 example 2 ED1 example 3 ED1 example 4

ED2example 1 ED2 example 2 ED2 example 3 ED2 example 4 ED2 example 5 ED2 example 6

ED3 example 1, ED3 example 2, ED3 example 3, aggro radius has since been updated, ED3 example 4, ED3 example 5

SANCTUM OF REBIRTH SPECIFIC TILES

  • Necro flank indicators for Vermyx and Kezalaam’s Moonstone Obelisk, flank also 1 downs moonstone prison..
  • Blast Radius of Coilspawns for Vermyx
  • Melee distance tiles for Kezalaam
  • 1 tile walk safespots for Kezalaam for floor patterns as well as melee distance tiles
  • Nakatra indicators for Sanctum Heiroglyphs, Soulfire, Soulfire Crosswave (star pattern during Nefhtys)

SoR example 1, SoR example 2, SoR example 3.1, SoR example 3.2

Additionally, I had previously made Zamorak, Lord of Chaos tiles. I have since added to this collection.

Further Zamorak Tiles

Zamorak - Infernus, this is a full trace of P7's pathing collision tiles.

example

Zamorak - All pad 5 trap spawns, helpful to know where not to stand! (does not include traps on northern arena).

example

Zamorak - All pad Lure+trap safe tiles+Infernus tiles, something I use with minimal visual clutter from base POV.

example

Nex, Angel of Death Tiles

  • Boss spawn/shield the elements tiles
  • Mage Minion Amalgamation + Spawn tiles

example

Raksha Tiles

  • Boss aggro lines
  • initial melee distance tiles
  • full dragonkin device pathing tiles as well as tail swipe safe tiles

example 1 example 2

The Ghrazi Blood Knights

  • Boss aggro lines
  • Lord Vasily Ghrazi tile trace, since he doesn't really move.
  • Instance spawn in tile.
  • Closest dummy placement tile, if you game with those.

example

Are you struggling with Arch-Glacor’s Ice Pillar Mechanic? I gotchu.

I also created a step-by-step movement tile pack to never lose a big streak again. Simply position yourself at 1 and follow the movement guide. You will initiate movement when Ice Pillars go into the red tiles. Use your discretion to stall some time after getting to step 6 & 7.

Discussion My biggest issue with the game as a super causal player

I'm played the game super casually since the mobile app came out. And while getting rid of mtx is huge there's still something that bugs me about the game progression.

To me, when I start the game, it seems like a game about interconnecting skills, quests, and the economy. But established players seem to think that combat is the peak of Rs3.

What draws me to the game, (and how the game is presented in the tutorial) is the massive web of interconnected progressions between skills. Mine a new ore, smelt a new bar, make a new ore box, make a new hatchet, cut a new tree, combine the new ore and the wood to fletch new arrows. Etc. Etc.

In this view combat is just one possible skill to train. It's a source of some items, and it lets you use the combat equipment you created with the other skills, but it's not the most important part of the game. Upgrading your combat gear isn't any more important than upgrading your pick, hatchet, or mattock.

If anything, the game presents that quests are the ultimate goal of progression. Raising your skills to be able to complete quests, that are one time achievements.

However, the reality is that past a certain point, every skill except combat is pushed down the ladder. Combat becomes the main thing to do when not AFK. combat is the best source of a lot of resources. Combat is the best way to make money. Etc. Etc.

Maybe I'm a weirdo that just likes different things than most people, but to me, the vision of the game should be that active high level skilling should be encouraged, and at least as rewarding as combat. But there's just this weird vibe shift part way through the game where that just isn't true.

Discussion Addressing the Bank Space Issue: Why It Is a Major Barrier for New Players.

I recently came across a post from a new player highlighting that bank space is a significant issue, and I completely agree that it is. It seems many players dismiss this problem by suggesting others "just buy space with bonds." However, this mindset is exactly why we struggle to retain new players. As a 20-year veteran of the game, even I view the current state of bank space as a major issue.

It is time to acknowledge this problem and advocate for the game we love. Improving this system will ensure that incoming players have a much better experience and help secure a healthier future for our community.

Hopefully our great jmods will see and raise this issue with the team! 🫣 (*Cough* endgame rebalance added suprise?)

HAPPY SCAPING! And keep up the good work whole jmod team!

Question Is Deathtouched dart really staying?

Post image

I remember Jagex saying they would remove Deathtouched dart as part of MTX items clean up. I still have some in my bank but they don’t appear in clean up filter. Did Jagex exclude them from the list or was it missed?

Question Hi From a New Player

Post image
85 Upvotes

I’m totally brand new to RuneScape. Played Dragonwilds and got addicted to skilling leading to me wanting more. For such a simple-looking game it has a lot of depth. I’ve been watching Colonello videos on the history of the series (the good and bad times) and lurked this thread for a while waiting for a new beginning to jump in. When it was cancelled I decided to give it a try and now it’s something I really look forward to playing every night.

I’m playing on the Steam Deck as an Ironman with 46 hrs of gameplay the past week or so as a member to force myself to earn everything and experience the game. Just completed Guys and Dolls. Talk about a learning curve to manually acquire the materials (from locating two small bushes to finding where onions grow) to make the dyes. Accidentally ate a couple trying to get them made so I had to do this several times… I know the wiki says you can just purchase them but I couldn’t find the quest to unlock the lady merchant. But that could be just that I’ve only done a couple quests and focusing mostly on the Halloween event to unlock what I can before it ends.

My question is about server selection. I usually just pick ones without a description. Are they all official and the same? Any I should avoid? Also, I can’t figure out why I’m not getting farming XP from the event. I scare the crows and pick the melons. I turn in all the items at once but my farming lvl is still 1/1. I’ve done it 15 times or so. It says order fulfilled with no XP.

Leaving a photo to show this isn’t AI.

Discussion The periodic table of Runescape foods

Post image
367 Upvotes

I am FINALLY re-organizing my huge food collection and i wanted to make something special so everybody could always see it.

I thought about doing a spreadsheet with all the items maybe descriptions and such, yet i am not sure on how to organize them so it looks pretty and easier on the eyes.

Currently its organized by how much they heal top to bottom, but we have so many classes i can only think this might be as hard to organize as a periodic table, there is sweets, fish, meat, quest items, event food, healing factors and many many more. HELP.

Suggestion Many recent bosses are still missing in-game information

Ivar has stuff tactics listed; and all of the older bosses do as well.

If we want to be more welcoming to new players, then remaining bosses (see screenshots) should also have some information about the mechanics listed in-game.

Discussion Runescape 3 wants me to pay for bankspace?

I am never playing a game which makes you pay for inventory space. This is stupid. This means they know you dont have enough space and want to make a quick buck. This is the most ridiculous ask and borderline mobile game level of predatory practice. This is after I pay for $140 worth of membership???? Yeah, never suggesting this game to anyone.

Edit: its clear this community just like to talk shit to people who criticize anything.
Reasons community wants to just roll over and accept this bs.

  1. Oh you can buy with bonds? why after paying a monthly fee.
  2. People have suggested using storage spots in different things. The thing is I dont even have a house, I dont have a brooch which I just found out stores urns, I do not have money for bonds. I want to progress in game and I like to do different things every day. This fills up the bank a lot faster than people realize.. Also, I do not have storing artifacts unlocked yet since it needs lot of artifacts discovered. I feel like I am expected to just know these details?? A lot of these items take a while to unlock...
  3. learn to clean you bank... I came to play a game not learn bank management when its clear they are only doing it to make extra money and they know they have too many items.
  4. this is make believe problem.. people with 17, 20, max accounts saying oh its a make belief problem. I started this game months ago and its clear this is not a game for new players.
  5. and my favorite one, why did you buy year worth of membership if you didnt know... yea never playing this shit again
  6. Quit rs and play osrs.
  7. you suck as a gamer :)

Also, just so you all are clear they have added extra space because they know they have a lot of items and its needed. They can support it but they want to charge money and you guys are happy to pay it.

EDIT 2: I DO NOT WANT INFINITE BANK SPACE. I want bank space they can clearly give but are not giving it due to $$. This is after charging monthly subscription.

EDIT 3:

I hope everyone realizes I am not bashing the game but selling bank space for money is scummy. Also, as I previously stated, when you train 20+ skills slowly, have monster drops, quest items, skill items, etc. you can get overwhelmed and its not easy to throw away items when you do not know what you will need in the future.

edit 4: thanks for all those who tried to help. I have cleaned out of my bank :) no other option. Also, my anger was not toward the players or the game. My anger was toward a company who is abusing it power over players.

edit 5: I am still gonna play this game too invested. I still will say game is wrong when they charge for bankspace.

Discussion Taking Plugin Requests

Do you have an idea for a plugin you think could be cool/useful?

I know enough about making plugins to be dangerous!

Give me your plugin ideas, and I'll see if either:
A.) Someone is working on it already
B.) If I can make it work for you!

Worst case the API doesn't expose the options to make it work, and we can think of alternative ways.

Maybe later I can do some classes on making your own plugins!

Appreciation As a relatively new player, the Road to Restoration has genuinely made me fall in love with the game

I never post on reddit, literally ever, but I just want to take the occasion and say how much I've enjoyed playing this game.

For context, I'm not a veteran of RuneScape. I never played when I was a kid, and only got to know the franchise some years ago through YouTube/Twitch.

I've tried both osrs and rs3 many times, but I've always ended up burning out and quitting for different reasons.

I've enjoyed rs3 gameplay (skilling and combat), but when I was showered with treasure hunter keys and proteans in the past, I always lost motivation and just ended up quitting (yes I know you can play ironman to not have any mtx).

In the meantime, I like the dedication it takes to level up in osrs (at least on paper), but always end up burning out so fast due to the lack of QoL (compared to rs3) and the low xp per hour / very click intensive skilling.

With Leagues 2 and the removal of mtx, I have found a new love for the game and ended up coming back this summer. Since then, I've been hooked ! Like many people in this sub, I was bummed out with Reignited and couldn't find motivation to keep playing, but regained it when Jagex decided to scrap it.

I just want to say to the devs that the road to restoration has such a positive impact on new players like myself, and your care for the game really shows.

The 2027 roadmap + the arrival of plugins have made me even more excited for the future. I hope Jagex keeps up this direction. With enough time and care, I think that the game has more potential than ever.

Discussion Suggestions for converting certain MTX combat equipment

I know we are expecting to have a reveal soon on how the MTX removal will affect various items, including equipment. While in some cases removing combat stats or converting to an override makes sense, I hope that they can be a bit creative with redistributing some of them. Here are a few of my ideas for your consideration:

• Lucky versions of equipment (whether cosmetic or not) have a chance of dropping instead of there normal variant, where applicable.

• Starfire/fury equipment is either bought with stardust or crafted from stardust+regular, tier-appropriate materials.

• Slime hunter added to drop tables of Cave slimes and similar creatures, similar to how Ghost Hunter was added to ghost drop tables (maybe even add a small bonus when killing slimy monsters!)

• Anima crossbows could be added to Heart of Gielinor drop tables

• Raddalin’s sword crafted with recipe from artisans workshop, using ceremonial sword techniques

• Mystic staff could be crafted.. with a lot of mystic cloth!

• Exquisite weaponry could be added to a store somewhere perhaps, or maybe crafted as well.

• Tzhaar whip dropped by, well, tzhaar.

• Serpentine weapons could be dropped by a serpentine monster.

• Valentines weapons/shields could be added as extra rewards from a quest like Heartstealers or Gunnar’s Ground.

These are some of my ideas. Let me know if you feel any of them make sense (or not), and feel free to suggest others as well!

Suggestion separate potion storage

Thumbnail
gallery
106 Upvotes

Potions takes up so much unnecessary space and clutters your bank. When playing OSRS, I appreciate that you can get a separate potion storage (reward from Mixology activity) that fixes this problem for me and even saves me a lot of bank space, because it doesn't count toward it and it's even practical for decanting.

Especially when playing ironman, with so many variant items being kept for necessity in your bank, the bank space can easily gets clogged and capped at higher end game. There is also arguably way more potion variants in this game compared to OSRS, so bringing a separate storage for potions is a QoL that I would love to see.

Why is it considered MTX? It took forever to get the Taijitu to unlock it. Same with the weapons, Winds of Waiko, Rage of Hyu-Ji, and Thassalia’s Revenge. If anything I hope they get a boost, at level 70 hybrid armour they’re worse than God Wars Warpriest armour which is easier to get.

Discussion Do we have estimates on Ghrazi rare drop rates?

I've mostly camped 100%. ~300 kills, got one of each bow, no codex.

Got my 2 drops within 4 kills of eachother in week 1. Wonder if they've played with rates or if enrage matters a lot.

What's our collective anecdotal evidence for drop rates?
