Question The worst bathrooms

I drive all over the western provinces regularly doing deliveries and a thought caught my attention yesterday.

So, I think we can all agree that, generally, Co-op bathrooms will be clean and stocked.

What bathrooms are generally less clean or generally run down?

Personally, I always drive past an ESSO.

Question why are people not moving to smaller towns?

for international immigration the only town on the SINP is moose jaw which isn't really rural, many towns in manitoba and saskatchewan are seeing a population decline and there isn't as much of a demand for housing compared to regina or saskatoon so whats stopping people from emmigrating there?

Question What is the most cost effective way to get solar panels?

Basically we want solar panels on our house. We know there used to be grants and shit. We can't find any but also aren't sure where to look. Just with the cost of everything and we are concerned the data center is going to fuck our bill up. We figure solar is best. We just have no idea where to start.

Question What the hell were the tunnels under Moose Jaw really for??

From Alberta, had an older customer from Saskatchewan bring up tunnels under Moose Jaw connected to Al Capone? Did some surface level googling to see if the tunnels were real- and they are! But it all seems very tourist oriented and not history. Are the tunnels just under Moose jaw or do they head somewhere else? Whats the real history behind them, if anyone knows. I am now dying of curiosity

Question should saskpower allow "balcony solar" panels in Saskatchewan?

Balcony solar panels (plug-in solar) are small-scale, DIY-installed PV systems designed for apartments, using microinverters to connect directly to standard 120-volt outlets to offset electricity bills. They typically range from 200–1,600 watts, with 800W systems covering 15-25% of apartment energy needs, costing $600–$1,500 with a 3–6 year payback.

Doesnt need to be just apartments. A home owner could do a setup at home with a few panels.

While we are at is as well, wonder how many towns have vacant lots that a solar setup would work? there is usually a pole or something to tie into.

Question Non-AI Service Provider?

Is Sasktel a reasonable option to switch for a cell phone provider after being with Bell? I moved from the east coast, so Bell is pretty much a monopoly over there. I would like to not support AI as much as possible, so I'm curious if Sasktel is the best option for boycotting those AI telecom companies. I wanted to switch to Koodo but I found out Telus is doing the same as Bell.

Edit: I didn't know i needed to clarify this, but when I say "data center" I'm speaking of the AI data centers. The whole point of this post is asking for any non-AI service providers that aren't building massive data centers.

Question Planning a road trip, never seen the Prairies. Small town suggestions?

Hello fine folks! I'm planning a road trip from Penticton BC to somewhere in Sask, we have 9 days total. We'd like to do maybe 6 ish hours of driving per day. The destination is not the goal here, it's the journey. I have never seen a prairie sky, or vast open land and weather. Any recommendations of cool places to experience?

I know this is a bit too open of a question,.but I don't really know where to start!

Also, should I leave my winter tires on? It's getting pretty warm here but I don't know about Saskatchewan

TIA!

Edit to add dates of May 2-10

Question Political questions for Indigenous people living in reserves

We don’t hear often about the politics in Indigenous reserves, notably about the band councils and the Chiefs. So I wanted to ask you:

What is your opinion about the band councils and Chiefs representing your community? Do you feel well represented by them, whether in your community or outside it? Do they good enough or not enough for the wellbeing of the population?

I’m eager to read what you have to say!

Question Has anyone else’s kid get screwed over because their school put them in Adult 12 instead of Grade 12 and now has to redo 10-12?

UPDATE: Thank you to everyone who gave some good info and where else to check.
We all really appreciate it.
We will be contacting the Universities and she will request meetings.

I’m writing on behalf of my sister as she’s not on Reddit.

The situation is my nephew graduated this year from Highschool.
He was looking forward to returning to do some upgrading as his grades had slipped when he had major surgery on both legs that left him unable to walk for a couple of months.

When they went to the school, they were informed that he had actually only graduated with an Adult 12 diploma, not a Grade 12 diploma- meaning he didn’t actually acquire the 24 credits and pre-requisites needed for when he wants to enter University.

The problem is that his school had only told my sister and I quote: “Because he was struggling due to his surgery and then covid they closed the school. They told us, that after a few years he could apply towards a college. Nothing about universities, if he did the Adult12. They did not explain that the Adult 12 does not have the 24 credits and pre-requisites required for college and University. It’s essentially useless.”

They informed my sister that he will need to redo Grades 10, 11 and 12.

Understandably they’re pretty upset, as that wasn’t what they were even told about, when they had a meeting about his grades.

She has requested in person meetings, but hasn’t heard back yet.

We are just wondering if any other parents have gone through this?
Thank you.

Question Passion Project; Researching Train station

Post image
57 Upvotes

Hello, I am currently doing some research and compiling information about train stations all over the province. They’re a fascinating topic, especially if you learn that there were almost 1500 of them in the province.

My question to you all is: Does anyone have any information about the “Dreghorn Station” that was between Pilot Butte and Richardson? This (1914) map was from the university archive. The only other lead is that the station moved to Jameson, then to Montartre in 1964 about.

The other suggestion is that if you have any community history books like “Where Aspens Whisper” or “Balgonie: Celebrating History”, please let me know and it could aid to my research about these lovely stations.

Question What's Tommy Douglas' legacy in Saskatchewan?

Post image
124 Upvotes

Speaking as someone who doesn't live there, I grew up with a lot of respect for Douglas. As a kid, I watched him voted as the "Greatest Canadian" in 2004, and I firmly believe it was a good choice to this day. Despite his early writings on eugenics, his implementation of universal health care saved countless lives in Canada.

But that's just my own opinion. Given that he was a proud socialist, and became Premier at the head of the CCF, and given how Saskatchewan's been re-electing the Saskatchewan Party for the last twenty years, I'm curious as to how Douglas' legacy holds up in that province.

Question Highway construction signage

Can someone please explain to me the horrendous job being done marking construction zones on Saskatchewan highways?

I travel Highways 6 and 16 into Saskatoon frequently, and I honestly cannot understand the way some of these construction zones are being signed.

There are signs everywhere—construction begins, construction ends, 60 km/h, no passing, reduced speed, electronic signs—and half the time I have no idea where the actual construction zone begins or ends.

For example, you'll come across a 60 km/h sign and start slowing down. The first few kilometres, most people are at least somewhat following the posted speed. Then 2 or 3 km later, traffic starts speeding up. By kilometres 4 or 5, you're basically back to highway speed. Then, around kilometre 7 or 8 or longer, you finally encounter the actual construction.

And once you're through that area, you're left wondering whether the construction zone has even ended because there is no sign saying construction ends.

I've experienced this travelling through the Jansen/Wynyard area. I passed construction around Jansen and am now travelling through Wynyard, yet following signage the construction zone never ended. This has been going on all summer. Am I still to be driving 60?

I've also passed two electronic signs that both say "Construction next 35 km." Yet there is no construction anywhere near the next 35 km.

I am 100% in favour of keeping highway workers safe. I understand how dangerous their jobs can be, and I absolutely support appropriate reduced speeds and properly marked construction zones when workers are actually present or when road conditions require it.

But when drivers are being told to drive 60 km/h for kilometres and kilometres with absolutely no visible construction, workers, equipment, lane restrictions, or hazards, what exactly is being accomplished?

Eventually, people stop taking the signs seriously.

You have drivers who are genuinely trying to obey the 60 km/h limit, while everyone around them is doing 90, 100 or even highway speed. The drivers following the limit gets bullied, tailgated and eventually swerved around. The drivers behind them get frustrated and drive recklessly. People start passing in places they shouldn't. Some drivers become reckless.

And that's the exact opposite of what these signs are supposed to accomplish.

If a construction zone is 35 km long, then clearly mark the actual zone and make it obvious where it begins and ends. If there is no work happening for 20 or 30 km, why are drivers being subjected to construction-zone restrictions for that entire distance?

There has to be a better way to manage this.

Proper signage should make drivers more aware and more compliant, not train them to ignore construction signs because they have learned from experience that the signs often don't correspond with what they're actually seeing on the road.

I'm genuinely curious—is there a legitimate reason these construction zones are being signed this way? Is it because the entire stretch is technically considered a work zone even when no work is taking place, or is this simply poor signage/traffic management?

Because from a driver's perspective, it makes very little sense.

Question Why Sask has so many saline lakes?

A lot of high profile saline lakes in Canada seem to be from SK. Is there something about the province geography or geology compared to adjacent provinces to explain this phenomenon?

Question Regional Food Dishes Invented In Saskatchewan Restaurants?

I'm looking to find every restaurant in Saskatchewan that invented a regional food dish. So far I only know of Regina Style Pizza- invented at Houston Pizza. I haven't yet been able to find the specific inventor restaurant of the Frajolaki Sandwich. Does anyone know who specifically invented the Frajolaki, or any other specific food dish inventor restaurants in Saskatchewan?

Question Is the cost of dying becoming too expensive?

I am currently researching the rising costs associated with cemetery fees across the province, which appear to be increasing significantly due to inflation and maintenance.

I have heard of individuals who are unable to afford headstones or traditional burials, as well as families who cannot provide the funeral services their loved ones desired due to these financial constraints.

I want to find out if this is a widespread, province-wide issue. Has anyone experienced anything like this?

Question Does your work do a holiday party or year end bonus?

I'm curious to see what other Sask employers do for the holidays. Do you get a staff party, like a nice meal or anything? Do you get year-end bonuses or any bonus paid days off? I've worked places with zero extras, to one that provided a full-on holiday cabaret with dinner, dancing, drinks, a ton of door prizes and salary bonuses.

Question Looking for small town or village for a trip over the weekend

Hello everyone, I live in Saskatoon and am relatively new to the province. I'm planning a travel plan for my family (a couple and a 10 year old kid) this summer. With this economy, I'm thinking maybe we will just travel somewhere within the province, explore what it offers.

We prefer somewhere remote, quiet and away from the city, kinda a small town or village that has natural scenery. And of course that town or village should have at least a motel, a place to eat, nothing fancy but at least there should be one. Just a short trip over the weekend or long weekend.

Appreciate any suggestions, thank you!

Edit: thank you so much, all of you suggested a lot of nice places and I really appreciate it. We will make plans for this year (and many more years) to travel and explore the province.

Question Do car dealers from different cities in Saskatchewan charge different amounts for the same new car?

I'm thinking of getting a new Honda or Toyota in the next year. Friends are suggesting I shop between Saskatoon and Moose Jaw or Saskatoon and Prince Albert or other cities in the province and get the dealerships to compete with each other on price.

Is this really a thing? Any suggestions?
