Question How did 3' x 3' become the standard play area for tabletop games when there's no such thing as a commercially available 3' wide table??

The vast majority of commercially available tables are only 30 inches wide (actually less, see below). Card tables are marketed and advertised as 3' x 3' but are in fact only 34" x 34", which means play mats and boards are larger than the tables, and there's no boundaries for cards, dice, game pieces, or "the supply." Nearly every table manufacturer claims the dimensions of their tables are larger than they actually are. That just leaves $400 dining room tables or $3,000 board room conference tables, or grossly overpriced specialty bespoke "gaming tables," or pushing multiple tables together (which leaves a dip straight down the middle of any game mat, among other issues such as now being TOO wide and not being able to reach the center of the play area). The only other option is to go back in time and learn woodworking, run out and buy a bunch of tools and lumber to build your own table. For board games. All because the standard play area size does not match what's commercially available.

I just don't get it. It's really frustrating and aggravating. EDIT: So is the abject stupidity of these replies. L2Read, FFS, you elitist mouthbreathers...

Question A cheaper Alternative to Warhammer?

First time here, sorry of this is the wrong flair

I used to be into TTRPGs a lot when I was younger, but lost interest as I grew up. Then around sophomore year in Highschool my friend introduced me to Warhammer and I fell in love with the 40k universe. AoS and Endtimes are cool in their own respective ways, but I prefer 40k to them.

Unfortunately every time I get paid, and look at a Set, it feels like the prices spike right when I think I can buy them. For example, I’ve been eyeing the Black Templars starter set for a while now, originally it was 250~ USD, but I looked at it today and the price has jumped up to 324 USD.

At this point I’m willing to look at other games that have the same criteria as Warhammer, as in, an Army building War game. I’m willing to explore into Fantasy or modern settings, I just want to paint minis that I can afford.

Question Please advise tabletop wargame for girls

I play Kill Team and I have daughters (9, 7, 5yo). They are able to play but the 40k universe is not attractive to them. They want some nice "girl" models and sisters of battle are - lets say - not enough (heresy, I know ...).

So I am looking for some alternative. I thought that maybe AoS Spearhead will offer some cool girl models? But not really. Nothing they would consider nice.

Then I looked into Warcrow and there are some good models there - certainly more than GW has in their arsenal. Do any of you have some experience with it?

Speaking of Corvus Belli, there is also Infinity game, which has some very cool girl models, but I am afraid that rules will be complicated to play.

I also stumbled upon "Burrows and Badgers" which I think is exactly what my younger daughters would like - but I am not sure if I want to see these cute models slaughtering and butchering each other.. not to mention that starter set (or just any set) is unavailable at this moment.

Please advise

Question How to talk about negative numbers in my ruleset?

I don't even know how to ask this question, so I'll just give an example.

A Player Character has a max-HP of 24 hit points.
After an attack they are reduced to -5(negative five) HP.
However, they do not die nor fall. They continue to play but with extra BS until they're healed.
However, if they are reduce to -24 or lower, then they die out right.

However do I express that clearly?
My first draft is "When your HP's negative value is equal to your max-HP's absolute value, then you die."
But I don't think that works.

Addition: The long and short is when in negative HP they start doing death saves while still having their full turn. Half health doesn't feel right for that.

Question My son wants to get into tabletop gaming — where should we start?

Hi everybody! I am the father of a eleven-year-old boy who loves anime and fantasy. He suffers from learning disability and has a limited group of friends that share his interest. As his father, I think he would really love tabletop games, but I don't know where to begin influence him as I myself don't have any experience with this genre. I think this hobby could relieve him from some of the loneliness he might experience and teach him about logic, strategy and other cognitive skills. Therefore, I believe I should invest my time learning (maybe act as a DM or something) and buy/build what is needed to teach him (and maybe his friends at some point) to play a physical tabletop game. Problem is, which one? I would appreciate if someone could point me the direction to a tabletop game for beginners and which can be played by 2 persons, but also possible to play with 3-4 persons. Tabletop games with physical figures and war-gaming table is a plus. Thanks!

Question How do you handle a missing player in your regular games?

Someone misses a week. No big deal, life happens, we get it. But how do you treat the missing character in the story?
Are they simply absent? Are they there but inactive? Does another player take them over for minor decisions?

I’ve tried a few different ways. What’s yours?

Question D&D Alternative

So basically what I am looking for is something that feel like D&D, the fun roleplay and all you know? But with mechs. I've been looking into Lancer but it seems sooooooo combat focused and I've heard that actual roleplaying isn't really part of it often.

I wanna feel like I'm having an adventure like D&D feels but with mechs. A nice mix of combat and roleplay, a good selection of mechs or a way to homebrew them

Is there anything that fits this? Would this just be super homebrewed D&D/Pathfinder? Would Lancer fit?

Question Has anyone made a LitRPG tabletop?

I read a ton of fiction, Manga, etc and one of the big ones that I really enjoy is LitRPG where someone starts at level one a bunch of random Dungeons spawns and they are forced to go into dungeons to clear them out and level up by doing so.

Think Solo Leveling as an Example.

I was thinking about doing something similar in DND but then I had the thought has anyone made an Actual Tabletop setting where this happens?

Players get exp from killing mobs level up get stat points to spend on customizing their character or Get Classes that as they level up get new skill options and a stat gain spread for that class, maybe have skills drop from mobs so not every class is the same.

Since the Dungeons that they enter are random spawned you can design a bunch of random dungeons and then roll some dice to pick which one they go in cause they won't know untill its entered what it is.

You can create a story for the game or just let the players enjoy being part of an adventurers Guild or maybe be one of multiple guilds that exist in your story setting.

If there isn't one like this I would be kinda surprised cause its already well developed in fiction as it is.

Question I need help finding the mythical 4x4 plastic folding table

My buddy and I play the Middle Earth Strategic Battle Game, which uses 4x4 tables. I want to find a 4x4 table to both play on, and place the tables I am building on, but for the life of me, I cannot find a cheap and simple 4x4 table - the ones I find are all nearly $1K tables made of expensive wood.

I am in Canada, which might be making things worse, but if anyone knows where to find one of these seemingly non-existant tables, I would love to know.

Question Game Shops - What makes them great?

I'm working on a project and wondered if I could ask - what are some of the things that make a game shop really stand out to you? Friendly staff, knowledgeable staff, great selection of games, great place to play, etc. Those are mine I guess. Can you guys think of anything else?

Question First TTRPG?

Hello everyone!

Pic sort of related, a Carcassonne session with my friend from the early-mid 2010's. I recall we did some music production on the side, hence the Macbook.

I have played:

  • Carcassonne
  • Warhammer
  • Eclipse The New Dawn
  • Magic The Gathering

Essentially I'm looking for ideas and inspiration for my turn-based fantasy RPG sequel with strategy elements for PC.

I have been looking at:

  • D&D: Heroes of the Borderlands
  • D&D: Dragons of the Stormwreck Isle
  • Heroes of Might and Magic 3
  • StarCraft

Also, how difficult it would be to transform the fantasy RPG into a boardgame?

Thanks in advance!

Question AI Killed Pinterest. Where Y'all Stealing Art from for your Home Games?

So in the two years leading up to COVID, Pinterest was my one stop shop for quick character art I can snag to use in my home games. Nowadays it has become almost impossible to find art that is not generated by AI. It is incredibly demoralizing. I miss browsing pinterest and getting inspiration for new NPC's to add to my games, and also finding some really amazing artists in the process. Where are you guys going to snag art. I do have friends I can commission, but I am not made of money and can't get custom art for everybody.

Question D19 without 1

Hey guys!

I am GMing a Symbaroum campaign for my friends and as a possible curse/stigma for being too corrupted, I am looking for a d19 that has the numbers 2-20 on them, but no 1. Symbaroum has 1 to be a critical success and 20 to be a critical failure. I found regular d19s, but nothing that fits my bill. I have a 3d printer, so printing one is an option. It does not have to be the most fair dice, I am aware that you won't get that if printing one. I'd use a blank d19 and write the numbers on myself, if necessary 😅.

Maybe you know something, thanks for your help.

Cheers

JB

Question Recs for a Tabletop Game Design Class? - Middle School

Hello! I'm a new teacher at a middle school this year teaching ELA/History. I also have a STEM homeroom class that's somewhat free form. I had been intending to teach my homeroom focusing on D&D as arts/adventure, but the school needed more STEM options, so I expanded the idea to be about designing a tabletop game prototype and studying the math and engineering behind various games. The plan is that each unit will focus on a different game to study/play as a potential inspiration for the prototype.

That brings me to my question. What are your recs for games for middle schoolers to study? I'm still thinking of having a unit on D&D, my principal brought up Settlers of Catan, and I'm thinking chess could be a good option to learn too. I also have a friend who designed a game that's doing pretty well, so I'm planning to incorporate that too with him as a guest speaker.

Question Beginner To The Deck Building Genre Asking for Recommendations

Hi all.

So, for context recently a friend and I decided to pick up Star Realms at a board game store, as one of the employees had recommended it to us. We have really enjoyed playing it lately.

This was our first experience with a physical deck building game, and we have really enjoyed the format. It's a great break from the TCG community and all that.

I was wanting to expand out and find some more fun deck builders for us to play and hopefully be able to include more people. There's low-key just too big of a selection at our local store lol.

Preferably would like to try some Co-op ones, but PvP recs are welcome too.

I know there's two co-op marvel Deck builders. But I am a little confused as to what the difference is there.

Thanks ahead of time tho!

Question What do you think about AI art within private campaigns?

I'm talking about private friend group campaigns here. I know there are people opposing AI art but not everyone can or wants to pay for art for their private campaign that only a handful of people get to see. The art could be for player avatar, keep, homebrewed items/NPCs or creatures, etc. Using unique artwork made specifically for you makes the campaign feel more alive but I also get that AI art isn't always original and it's taking work away from real artists.

Question Where to see Table Top game Reviews

Me and my girlfriend are new to playing BoardGames, and we wish to only buy games that are really what we think they are, so is there a place were we can see reviews of table top games.

Example: in the internet (Youtube, X, Instagram) i saw a lot of recommendations for Everdell and Flamecraft,, but when i specifically searched for those 2 games, i saw a lot of controversies about the game, how flamecraft is tasteless and vapid, and that were a lot of everdell expansions (not sure that they are expansions or a brand new game of the franshise) that were better then the actual game.

So, is there a place to see reviews, that are trustworthy?

Question I got tired of all the little things spreading across the gaming table, so I made this

Thumbnail

I’ve been thinking about making some fabric accessories for tabletop gaming, but I wanted to start with something that actually solves a problem.

My older son plays Warhammer 40K, D&D and FATE, so I first thought about making a dice bag with separate compartments for different sets.

I asked him what he thought.

His answer was basically:

“Why? That’s pointless. Just throw all the dice into one bag.” 😂

Fair enough.

Then I was playing board games at home with my younger son and started noticing how many little things were constantly ending up everywhere — dice, tokens, cards, notes and other small components.

So I thought: why not make something that actually organizes the game while you’re playing?

This was the result you can see on photos.

It’s a foldable fabric organizer made from two sections connected with snaps. One section can be used as a dice tray / play area, while the other can hold dice, cards, tokens, notes and other small components.

When you’re finished, you can fold it up and put it away.

This is the first thing I’ve made in what I hope will become a collection of useful tabletop accessories.

So I’m curious — what do you always find yourself wishing you had on the gaming table?

Something for dice? Tokens? Cards? Keeping things from getting mixed up? Something for carrying everything to game night?

And what sounds useful but would actually be completely unnecessary?

I’m trying to figure out what gamers would genuinely use before I start making more things.
