A friend of mine is taking care of her dying mother in the NL. She also has to sell their house in Tanzania, bcs they need the money for the funeral. She is only 19 years old and isn’t fluent in Swahili.
I study Dutch law, so have no experience with Tanzanian laws or practice. Im very desperate to help her. Any tips/advice/sources are much appreciated. I don’t think a realtor is an option for her. This would also mean she would have to sell the house on the streets.
She is afraid someone might claim the property is theirs, which apparently is common there. She would then have to go to court.
She also needs a reliable representative to sell, bcs she doesnt have the nationality.

There's a growing debate among young Tanzanian professionals—from maritime officers and software engineers to health specialists—between seeking international contracts/foreign opportunities vs. staying to build local infrastructure and enterprises. For those in specialized fields, what factors (salaries, working conditions, bureaucracy, or long-term growth) are actually driving your decision?

I’ll be in Tanzania in February with a friend and we are trying to decide whether to fly between Zanzibar and Dar es Salaam or take the ferry.
I’m interested in hearing people’s thoughts on the environmental impact of flying such a short distance. Do you think that taking the 15 mim domestic flight instead of the 2 hour ferry is unethical for the environment?
I’d also appreciate to hear some advice from people who have already made this journey. Considering comfort, reliability and convenience, would you recommend flying or taking the ferry? Are there any significant differences in the overall experience?
I’ve read that the ferry can be quite bumpy and chaotic which makes me a bit nervous, but I’m not sure whether it’s really as bad as some people say.
Thanks for any advice!

I’m retiring in six months and my pension is about 2200 USD per month. Will I able to live comfortably in Dar? I left Tanzania when I was 27 years and I’m now 58. Pension is lifetime. It’s only me and no dependents. I have enough cash to buy a land and build a house. Total investment is about USD 220k.
Thanks in advance

Hi everyone!
I'm an independent developer working on Sauti, a personal research project aimed at developing a fully offline, context-aware Swahili–English AI interpreter.
The long-term goal is to create an interpreter that goes beyond word-for-word translation by preserving meaning, conversational context, cultural nuances, and speaker intent, while eventually operating entirely on a user's device without requiring an internet connection.
I'm currently looking for Swahili speakers, bilingual speakers, and people proficient in both Swahili and English who would be willing to help review translation examples through a Google Form.
What you'll be asked to do:
- Review Swahili–English or English–Swahili translations.
- Identify inaccuracies, unnatural phrasing, or lost meaning.
- Suggest corrections or more culturally appropriate expressions where possible.
- Help identify instances where context changes the intended meaning.
How your contributions will be used:
Your feedback will help evaluate the current translation system, identify weaknesses in our dataset, and potentially improve future model training. Submitted corrections may be incorporated into research datasets and subsequent model-development experiments, subject to the consent and data-use information provided in the form.
Participation is entirely voluntary. Please do not submit personally identifiable, confidential, or sensitive information in your responses. There is no expectation to disclose personal experiences.
This is an independently developed project, not an institutional or university-sponsored research study. I'm seeking genuine linguistic feedback rather than simply collecting large amounts of automatically generated text.
Google Form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSefLxVw2hQ-pIgAkaCuTvkmWm8ijrpk-jIGCLiGqLotKV2tIA/viewform
Estimated completion time: 5 to 8 mins
I would also appreciate feedback on the research approach itself, particularly from people familiar with Swahili linguistics, translation studies, or multilingual AI.
Thank you for considering contributing. I hope to make this project useful to Swahili-speaking communities while keeping the research process transparent, respectful, and open to criticism.

Hey everyone,
I’m in Arusha for the next few days and trying to avoid the usual tourist-trap restaurants. I want to experience the real-deal local food scene while I'm here.
Morombo is already locked in on my list for an epic nyama choma night, but I'm looking to fill out the rest of my lunches and dinners.
Specifically looking for:
Mama Ntilie spot for lunch: Where can I get the best, most authentic wali maharage, pilau nyama, or a proper mchemsho? I'm completely fine with informal neighborhood shacks/stalls as long as the food hits.
Street food classics / local hangouts: Best spots for chipsi mayai, mshikaki, or some solid kitimoto?
Your personal favorites: If you live here or have spent serious time in Arusha, what is the one hidden gem or family-run joint you'd tell a friend they have to visit?
I have zero food allergies and a massive appetite for real deal local Tanzanian flavors.
Drop your favorite spots and exactly what dish/modification I should order when I get there.
Asante sana!

I want an opportunity to try local dishes! We will be on a northern circuit safari and then staying in Zanzibar. Will the safari accommodations typically have local food options or is this something we should seek out in Zanzibar. What are some must try foods/dishes?

As a foreigner, I have $55k and want to start a small business in Tanzania. I have done my research but still can't find a good idea. Is there any advice on where and how I can start my business?

For context, i was scrolling through tiktok and i came across this video it’s a girl and she was lip singing and dancing basically showing her happiness because her boyfriend kamnunulia iphone 18, and as i passed through the comment section nikakutana na that comment
It pains me to see such comments honestly, it makes me feel so bad of how lost we are as a gender, i know nimeingiza mambo ya gender because i’ve never once seen a man be soo insecure with his skin as the way us women are🥹🥹and it breaks my heart kwann hatujipendi jinsi tulivyo? Yaani she sees kwamba the only way she would be deserving to receive such a gift is only by changing her skin colour🥹🥹
I’m a lightskin woman and i honestly love a dark complexion, i daily admire when i see a black woman with her natural hair i love it, so when i see such comments concerning their skin it truly breaks my heart and i wish for the ones that usually feel such an insecurity they’d see themselves through my eyes

For anyone who wants to start working out or is already working out, this is pretty impressive to see!
People coming together every Saturday morning to run, walk, or do other exercises. I was really happy to see how many people showed up this morning ( it was my 1st time to join ).
I hope other regions in Tanzania can do something like this too. 🌊🌴🎉
📍 Location: Toure Drive, Dar.
Have you joined this before while in Dar?

Hey all,
I am a High School student in Ireland and I am carrying out research on healthcare infrastructure in Tanzania. I just have a few questions about it and I would love to hear some personal experiences from residents of Tanzania.
Thanks you so much for reading and answering my questions. I really appreciate any insight that you may have! Thanks

Going to Arusha, Dar and Zanzibar desember to April. Went to my doctors do get malaria profylaxis but she ended up recommending saving my money and just being cautious when the sun sets and covering my body, bug spray and nets ect. Also said to bring some Malarone to use as treatment (3 pills a day for 4 days) if i were to get sick. And to take a pill everyday if i know im going into a higher risk area. And if i do get malaria go to the hospital and get treated. She made it seem like a more reasonable option. Said she personally travels a lot to those areas with her kids and they have never taken anything…
Anyone have experience with this? Would be awesome to save some money. Looking at 400$ just for the Malarone for 4 months…
