Admissions Getting Your Second Choice Offer Doesn't Mean You Were Rejected From Your First Choice

Accepting Your Second-Choice Offer

Should you receive an offer to your second-choice program, you are encouraged to accept it and pay the non-refundable tuition deposit (if applicable).

What happens to my first-choice program if I accept my second-choice program? Your first-choice program will continue to be assessed throughout the application cycle. If you receive an offer to your first-choice program at a later date, you can accept this and your non-refundable tuition deposit will be transferred from your second-choice offer to your first-choice offer.

Admissions Dates + Deadlines for Admissions

If you got accepted between October 1, 2026 to March 31, 2027 you have until May 1, 2027 to accept your offer as per here.

The need to accept within 14 days refers to offers made after August 1, 2027.

I have already seen two people have reading comprehension fails on this.

Campus Life Engineering Students PSA

I’ve been struggling a lot with depression lately, and honestly, there have been times when I’ve felt completely defeated. Between the academic pressure of engineering, the increasing cost of the program, and everything else going on in life, it can be difficult to know where to turn for support.

I recently came across this website that centralizes information about the coverage and resources available through our UASU Health & Dental Plan:

If you didn’t opt out of any fees, then you should have this. I wasn’t fully aware of what our student plan covered, especially when it came to mental health support. I was always too caught up in other worries to really look into it.

I just wanted to share this in case other engineering students, or UofA students in general, are in a similar position. I hope this reaches someone who needs it

Edit:
“In order to use your UASU Health and Dental Plan, you must have one of the following:

• Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP): A provincial health plan for residents of Alberta.

• Another Canadian Provincial Health Care Plan: If you are covered under a health care plan from another province or territory in Canada.

• University of Alberta Health Insurance Plan (UAHIP): A plan for international students who are not eligible for AHCIP.”

Academics 1.5 GPA to Engineering degree

If you're a first year or anyone struggling right now, I want you to know it's possible to come back from this. I graduated in 2022 with my Engineering degree after starting with a 1.5 GPA in my first semester. It wasn't easy, but it was worth it. Lock in, and don't count yourself out.

Question ns 201 registration - advice needed!

Post image
• Upvotes

Hi! I’m hoping to take NS 201 next winter, but Bear Tracks says the class is closed and to contact the department. Do I just email Native Studies, and are they usually able to let you into the class or is it pretty restricted? Also how is NS 201 overall? I took NS 115 last year and did pretty well (made notes, watched videos, did brief overview of readings), but I’m a little worried about the essay. Is it based on material from the whole course or mainly the last unit? Thanks!

Campus Life Parking issues on campus

The parking fee here on campus is way too high. I've parked a couple times on Whyte ave but the walk from there is about 20 minutes. And busses are always delayed. I was wondering if anyone knows a free parking zone or street near campus where parking is free.

Question Dentistry Program

Hi all,

Just wanted some advice with regards to applying for the DDS program next cycle.

A little context: I graduated from UofC in 2024 with a 3.9 cGPA and was awarded a degree in microbiology. I was lucky enough to be an honours student so I got to complete a thesis, a presentation, and did a lot of research throughout my entire final year. I've also volunteered & completed about 330 hours in clinical research post-graduation.

What stopped me from doing the DAT and applying back then was the fact that I was not a permenant resident of Canada, thereby making it almost impossible to get in. So, after I graduated, I managed to land a job right away in QA and now have almost 2.5 years of experience in the food industry. While I was working, I learned that I also had to learn French to maximise my chances of getting the PR. Therefore, I spent 1.5 of those years learning French and managed to get a C1 (CLB 9) across all sections, which helped me secure my PR. I feel quite comfortable now in speaking that language.

Fast forward to now, I am still working and 1 month into content review for the cDAT exam. I still have 2 prerequisite courses that I need to take as well, which I plan on taking in the coming spring.

Since I will be applying next cycle, ill have till next October to sharpen up my application. Therefore, what do you think I should be working on the most? Also, do you think I have a good baseline for applying?

One last thing, I read up on a couple of previous posts regarding the importance of demographics in invites and wanted to share for reference that I am ethnically Arab (Lebanese) if that would be relevant.

Thanks guys.

Campus Life Is it too late to make friends?

I’m a first year and have no friends, even though I live in residence. I have a couple acquaintances in res but I still go several days at a time without having any actual conversations and I’m sick of it. I always hear that people make friends in the first couple weeks of school and don’t bother afterwards, so is it too late for me to start chopping it up with some random person beside me in lecture? Also, is it too late to join clubs? Is it even possible to join clubs at this point in the year? Honestly how the hell do people make friends because not having any is making me lose my mind!!!

Academics SEM330 grading and assignments

I am taking SEM 330 this term and wanted to see if others who are taking it now or before thought the grading is a little vague or inconsistent? My previous two assignments have not been great. I wanted to ask if it gets better or more clear in the future assignments. Also, if anyone knew how the letter grades are assigned in previous terms, that would also help!

I think I tripped the breaker in my room at plh.

I submitted a maintaince request but I'm not sure how quickly the do things. Would it be better to contact my ra/ra on shift for a more simple fix like this?

I'm not sure if I should call the urgent requests phone number. I still have lights and heating. Just no power from any outlet.

Question Best move for major transfer

Hello, I am currently enrolled in a BSC program year 1 and I plan to make a change to Poli Sci for next fall as I take a gap in winter Semester. i am currently taking 4 courses: Math 144, PSYCH 104, ASTRO 120, and NS 201. I am fairly confident that I could get atleast a 3.0 on every course here except for MATH, which I may or may not fail this semester. If I want to have a higher chance of succeeding in my transfer to Poli sci, would it be a smarter move to drop Math now to most likely end with a higher GPA average (around a 3.0), or try my best to get atleast a passing mark on MATH (potential 2.3-2.6 average)? I hear that if I havent completed 24 credits yet they will blend my highschool average alongside my Uni GPA for transfer. Advice Greatly appreciated

Admissions UofA Master of Management Analytics (MMA) - Please Advise

I recently graduated from UofA with a BSc in Nutrition and Food Science and I’m looking to switch fields and get into something more business related.

I’ve been looking into the MMA program but I have absolutely zero coding experience and honestly struggled quite a bit with STAT 151, although I managed to finish with a B+. I also got an A in MATH 134 but also struggled a lot and I don’t even remember anything now cuz I took this like 5 years ago

My GPA over the last 60 credits is around 3.3. I have some work experience in sales, pharmaceutical manufacturing and running a small business.
Would someone with my background realistically be able to handle this program?

Also wondering if my degree would even be considered STEM for admissions. Would appreciate any advice, especially from current MMA students or graduates.

Tia

Academics NS 115 midterm 2

So, I wanna do well on this upcoming midterm like how everyone says this class is an “easy A”, but the last midterm I scored a B which honestly upsetted me after creating notes and watching all the lectures. And the fact it’s open book and I still didn’t score how I wanted. Any advice ?

Question Switching from Microbiology to Geology/Geophysics, is it worth it?

Yo, guys!
I’m a first-year UofA student in Molecular, Cellular & Developmental Biology. I originally picked it because I was interested in genetics/biomedicine and thought about dental school or working in hospital labs after. But now I’m realizing that finding a decent-paying job with just a BSc might be pretty tough. Even with a master’s, I don’t see many opportunities paying over $50–60k, which isn’t really what I’m looking for.

I’m thinking about switching to Geology, Geophysics, or Earth Sciences while I’m still in my first year. Has anyone made a similar switch, was it worth it? How are things going after graduation?

Also, is there anyone from Biology, Biochem, or Chemistry grads here? What are you doing now? How’s the pay and job market? Any regrets?

I’m also considering Engineering, but I’m worried it might be too much and I don't want to reapply, since it's easier to make a change in science department.

For context: (F) I’m getting closer to 30, don’t wanna waste another 4 years and perhaps masters on a degree with limited job prospects, and definitely don’t plan on doing a PhD.

Would love to hear your experiences! Feel free to comment or DM me. Thanks!
