Question Safety at night

Hello, I am about to transfer soon without a car, so I will be relying on public transportation to get to school and back home. I will have long days where I will have to walk from the bus station to home at night. Is it relatively safe for a girl to walk home alone in the dark if I'm near UC Merced? I know that I always have to be on my toes but I'm wondering how worried I should be. It would probably be a 20 minute walk maximum.

I've seen several comments regarding Professor Haik and numerous complaints and it doesn't take long to find out that many people have had similar experiences in his courses. I was just curious if anyone knows specifics?

Question Choosing between on-campus and off-campus

Hello, I am a Spring 2027 transfer student and I am struggling to chose between the cost of living off campus and on campus. I don't have a car so I would have to use the bus to get everywhere, including clinics/hospitals for volunteering. But the housing off campus would save me thousands of dollars.

On Campus housing is very expensive even for a Quad room where you share with four people, and on top of that you have to get a meal plan. But that means I don't need to buy a car or be worried about the bus schedule to get to school.

Do you think it is worth the cost to live on campus, or should I just struggle living off campus to save costs? My parents have suggested to start on campus for one semester to adjust, but i still think it's really expensive to where I have to take out like 5k in loans.

Please help!

Question do i seriously need a mac

got an email saying I need a mac or pc but all i have is an tablet. I could get a keyboard and a mouse to make it function more like a computer but would that be sufficient?

keep in mind im not a stem major so i dont need high end functions, but i still need it to work. I need portability, battery, and efficiency

If not my tablet, what are some laptops that can do the bare minimum to help me pass my courses? I need it to last me my college years but also i dont really care about extra functions unless theyre going to help me be more efficient with my work

thank you

Question Is there a lot of partying there?

My child is looking at UC Merced, but they specifically don’t want a party school. I have told them that there will be partying at every school, but is UC Merced less, way less, more, way more than average?

Question How is ENGR 180 and ENGR 155?

I've been thinking about taking ENGR 180 and ENGR 155 next semester, I'm curious to ask about what they're like? Do they have midterms and finals, or are they more chillaxed? I heard that ENGR 155 is more project based and such. I wanted to ask so I can make informed decisions. Thank you.

Question Has anyone visited UCM’s new Field Education and Research Center near the vernal pools?

I was wondering if any students have been there yet. Is it open for students to visit on their own, or do you need to go through a class, tour, or reserve program? I’d also be interested to hear what it is like and how you get there.

Question Son lucked out of UCB and got in to UC Merced.

Apologies for the title, dont know how to word it.

My son since middle school has his eyes on UC Berkeley and wanted to take a comp engineering major. Sadly he didnt get in, even his 2nd choice Cal Poly. Nothing against UC Merced and I even encouraged him to try it. He said he'll go to CC and transfer to UCB after 2 years. Do you think he's right? I need help to encourage him to go to UC Merced.

Thanks in advance.

Question PC Help

Dorming at UC Merced and I got a new pc during the summer which broke down so im depressed since I just got it and I saved up for nearly a year so was wondering if there was an like IT guys or anyone in general who knows how to fix these sort of things. Im broke rn but I have a on campus job so I should get some money soon after I go back. Im willing to pay for it to get something replaced as long as theyre not scamming me or whatever. Reason im asking is because I dont have a car and going to best buy and asking them to replace it after doing research will probabaly set me back $500 dollars which is almost half the price I spent on this pc. The pc wont power on and I suspect its something to do with the psu and i consider myself a computer guy but if the issue was with the software I could fix it on my own but im clueless when it comes to hardware. So if anyone could help me out when the school semester starts would be great.

Question Thoughts on the school from current students

Hi all! I am a current undergrad biology student at community college and will be transferring out this year. I do live about five hours away from the school without traffic, so I did have a few things I wanted to ask about to ensure UC Merced could be a school option.
1. Are the dorms decent/nice? and if so, is there transfer specific housing?
2. What is student life like at UCM, and is it more of a quiet campus?
3. For working-students are there many jobs (mainly part time) open nearby the campus (15-20 minutes away)?
4. Is the food at the dining halls good? I'm not much of a picky eater, I'm just wondering if I can rely on a dish from the cafeteria to bring up my morale after a STEM exam obliterates my hopes and dreams?
5. Are the class sizes on a smaller scale? And is it easier to make friends with classmates?
6. Lastly, and mainly for alumni, does graduating from UC Merced affect how employers or graduate schools see you?

Thank you guys. :)

Question Pre calc professors?

I have to take pre calc next semester and I was wondering what the professors are like? Right now it doesn't show any instructor but is there a professor that generally teaches pre calc?

I haven't really heard great things about the math curriculum here or the professors but maybe there's a gem.

Question Most easiest Science course/instructor + how is ESS043?

What’s the easiest Science class/instructor to take just to fulfill the GE requirements that is in color pencils and crayons for somebody who is terrible at science in general?

I did stumble upon ESS043: Biodiversity and Conservation but there are no reviews for the instructor’s ESS class and it’s just all bio reviews 😐. How is the ESS043 class/instructor? How is the workload?

Question Does the UC Merced Amtrak discount code still work?

Post image
13 Upvotes

Has anyone been able to get the UC Merced Amtrak discount recently? I tried adding the discount code listed on the UCM website but either the price stays exactly the same or the code doesn’t work at all.
Is the discount still active, or is there a different code or process we have to use now?

Question College Financial help

Hi I'm an upcoming highschool senior and have been looking at UC Merced for a good while since I've gone here on two occasions and loved how everything looks . Im in the automatic admission program thing for Merced meaning I am legible to be accepted if I decide to apply automatically or something along those lines. I really want to go after two years in community college but I wanted to know if the finacial aid is good or not since i have no college fund or anything which is ok ,im a first generation chicano student who is in dual enrollment for just my juinor year and senior so im pretty sure i might qualify for a bit of college credit. I wanted to know if anyone has a site similar to me and how much you paid for college ,I do think if I were to choose merced i would have to move because its an hour awah from me, would it be better to find another type of housing or live on campus , again i fo expect myself to have a bit saved up since im looking to work throughout my senior year and looking at scholara. Any tips or experiences from people's tution would help. Thanks šŸ™Š

Question switching from math 21 to math 05?

I’m debating wether i should stay in calculus or go into pre calc (math 5), I want to switch because i only took geometry and algebra 1&2 in highschool but senior year I didn’t take math at all. i’m a freshie taking calc 1 now in college and idek what’s going on. I only know the basic things like graph wise but other than that, i’m completely lost. I want to switch but my friends are telling me not to, that you don’t want to take calc 1 your sophomore year for whatever reasons and just not to switch so i’m currently debating if i should switch or not. If i heard right, i only take math 5 for the first semester and then transition back to calc 1 the second semester when I am ready. Plus my teacher even recommended it to us to switch if we don’t understand what is going on in class, because she doesn’t want us to suffer in calculus for not switching

Question Questions from an aspiring transfer student

Hi all,

I'm a first year Mechanical Engineering student at a community college with the goal of transferring for my Bachelor's.

Regarding curved grading: I had been intending to transfer to a UC, but I keep hearing that most profs grade on a curve. The way it was explained to me is that there's a limited number of students that are able to get an A (like 10%) and that even if you get 95% on an exam, if you're in the lower denominator you still get a low grade. How accurate is this?

How is the mechanical program at UCM? Are there any solid clubs where I can get hands-on experience?

And lastly, I've heard that the student experience reflects CC's in terms of professors and support being more available for students. True?

Thanks for any insight.

Question How does research actually work here at merced

Im a first year transfer for aerospace engineering who really wants to go into my Ph.D. program at a uc, preferably Berkeley.

Im trying to get into research, and I literally can not find anything. I've signed up for CoLab. there isn't much on there. I only have 2 years here at the uc, and I want to make the most of it.

Has anyone here actually taken part in research? What is it like? What's the time commitment?
