Casual Academic

Hey guys,

Long story short, I applied for a casual academic role as a tutor for an engineering subject I scored highly in. The unit coordinator sent me an email about 3 weeks ago telling me I got the role and to wait while he allocates classes. A few days ago he sends a follow up email saying that he can no longer give me the class because “university guidelines have changed” and I can’t teach as an undergrad. He said I can apply for an exemption. Does anyone have any recommendations on next step. Should I contact head of engineering or SRC? Did anyone else experience anything similar?

Answering the 3 most common questions on this subreddit

Every semester I see the same 3 questions asked on this subreddit from new students so here is a quick answer to them lol:

  1. Should I come here or go to UNSW/UniMelb?

Answer: The prestige difference between Usyd and those 2 unis is, for the most cases, much smaller than people think. Also, most of us here never attended UNSW or UniMelb. Do your own research.

  1. Should I join Dalyell?

Answer: Yes. You can always leave later if you don’t like it.

  1. Is my timetable good?

Answer: If there is any red, there is a clash that you wanna look into. Otherwise, yea its probably fine. Please be aware of your attendance requirements (should be written in the UoS outline - just google the course code and you should see it)

EDIT: There are some very good Q and A for other questions in the comments. Be sure to check them out!

Renting a shared house around usyd

• Upvotes

Hello! Me and my 3 other friends are incoming students Feb next year. We don't have many seniors so its hard finding help.

Informations:

  1. Looking for a place to rent where the 4 of us can live together and split the rent.
  2. Preferably within walking distance or 20-30 mins of commute to usyd.
  3. Max 600 dollars per person monthly since we have limited allowance.

Questions:

  1. Would renting together with students from UNSW a wise choice? If yes which area should we focus on?
  2. Is it possible to find a house to rent within that budget?
  3. Where to find affordable & safe housing area?

Helps are appreciated. Thank you so much.

(Thank you OP for approving and supporting the youth mental health)

Hi all, WE ARE NEEDING PARTICIPANTS! ✨

We're a research group from Brain and Mind Centre, running a study on different approaches to improving sleep and supporting mood in young adults aged 18–30.

This is a longitudinal study, meaning we follow participants over time to understand how these approaches work and to support better mental health and wellbeing for young adults into the future.

If you're 18–30 and currently experiencing difficulties with your sleep and low mood, we'd love to hear from you. To check whether you're eligible, you can complete our brief screening form here: https://redcap.sydney.edu.au/surveys/?s=TFNKCMFKC4CHA3NA

Participation is voluntary. For University of Sydney students, taking part has no bearing on your grades, coursework, or academic standing.

Approved by the University of Sydney Human Research Ethics Committee (project no. X23-0450).

I'm thinking about moving to Sydney from Melbourne, to study a JD. I have a CSP to both, is there much difference between the universities?

Academic integrity

Hey guys, I'm in my final semester and next week is my last at uni. A month ago I submitted an assignment with 3 questions (1000words) each on the same case study for everyone, with 3-4 concepts to pick from and relate to the case using academic literature. The 4th question was a reflection on one module of your choice from weeks 1-3. I got HD with a really positive feedback.

Then almost a month later I got an email from academic integrity saying my work is too similar to another student's. I don't know anyone in this unit because it's an elective. We all had the same case studies, the same limited concept options, the same readings and lecture, so I'm not surprised a lot of people picked the same ideas, sources and even the same week 2 module for the reflection.
I did use ChatGPT and I ticked generative AI on the declaration for editing and paraphrasing, so I wasn't hiding it. I honestly did the work myself and never shared it with anyone, but I'm freaking out because the meeting is next week and I'm supposed to graduate soon. What should I expect at the meeting? Has anyone been through this?

Please find the Participant Information Sheet here.

guys lets go out this saturday

tldr; looking for 1-2 people to go to a Halloween party this Sat. From Western Sydney.

Hi! A bit about myself. I'm 21m and a recent usyd grad! did comp sci.

Some of my favourite things to do are cliff diving, snowboarding, and scuba diving! I also really like travelling; I recently did a 1-month work holiday in Japan, working at a lodge.

ANYWAYS, I was planning to go to a Halloween party (or two!) this Saturday in Sydney CBD. If you can take the odd banter, want to dress up as a ketchup bottle, or just want to have a chat about how miserable or amazing your life is, let's go out and get f*d up and have some hsp after :D

what can we do about the girl who vapes in our tute

she sits alone behind my groupmates and i and when she vapes, the smoke flows forward to us. the tutor sees this, he just doesn't do anything about it. we've asked her to stop and she just stares blankly back at us until we turn back. we cant just move cause all the other tables are the unassigned assigned seats for other groups.

Honours for adv computing

Hey everyone!

I’m a first-year, first-semester student studying a Bachelor of Advanced Computing at USYD, and I’m interested in pursuing Honours.

I wanted to ask how the Honours pathway works, what the eligibility requirements are, and what WAM I should aim for. Also, do I need to apply separately, and how competitive is it to get into Honours?

I’d appreciate any advice from people who have gone through the process or are currently doing Honours in Advanced Computing.

Thanks!

📖Course or Unit Academic comebacks?

I’ve been seeing a lot of people post their experience about failing assignments and mid terms lately (I can relate this sem). Can anyone share a story of how they made a comeback in the end after bombing assignments or exams worth 20%? I’d love to see some hope and support if you’re open to sharing!

📖Course or Unit Simple Extension 5 Days

I've applied for the 5-day simple extension multiple times before, and it's always been approved instantly. However, this time my application has been pending for over 30 minutes, and my assignment is due today.

If the deadline passes while my extension application is still pending, will I get a late penalty, or will the extension still apply if it's approved later?

Has anyone experienced this before?

Jobs related to degree

At what point in your degree did you manage to land a job in line with what you were studying? I’m currently still working retail as a 2nd year and am getting a bit worried about it. For health specifically, I know it’s great to have experience in the field you’re studying earlier on but I am struggling to land a job that’s aligned with my degree
