SmartMedia 5V hardware emulator.
Built for BOSS SP-202 gear, but it emulates a standard SmartMedia 5V card, so it will work in a QuickTake 200. It has a serial port over USB-C and open source firmware ( and a web app)
Looking for devs and QuickTake owners to test it and hack on it. Who’s in?

MacEffects iMac inner bezel installed
Well, we did it. It took a few hours with lots of rewinding and we ended up with two extra screws. But we did it! Thank you Mac27 for the helpful video.

Fun little find at my local e-cycle spot the other day. Even included an OSX 10.3 cd (only disk 1 though).

Clicking/buzzing noise from under touchpad on Ibook g4 14 inch
I am having an issue where on the press of the power button you can hear a buzz from under the touchpad, but it doesn’t boot. Anyone ever have this issue? I really hope it isn’t an issue with the pmu. Edit: For more info, the issue is intermittent and I am also using an aftermarket charging cable. The battery is completely dead on the Ibook additionally.

What's this huge expansion card in my SE?
Hi all, I just did a BlueSCSI mod for a Macintosh SE. Feels like a miracle that it all worked as working on these old Macs is a bit outside of my skill range. Removing the board was tough because of this massive expansion card. Does anyone know what this is? And am I actually getting the benefits of this card without some kind of driver since I just installed a new OS?

iBook 12" LCD single stuck line: is there any hope?
Main question is as per the title: this single line of incoherent pixel data has appeared recently. The pattern within it changes but not quickly enough that I've seen it change.
It's a 1.33GHz iBook with the scrolling trackpad and running 10.5.8.
Is there any hope? Or is this now permanent and/or possibly the beginning of more?
The keyboard also now has issues but that's not really a primary concern if the screen is soon done for.
(As an aside: I pulled this one out to help to prepare a new SSD with OS 9 disk drivers for another machine, which it did admirably. It's just sad if it's otherwise time to say goodbye)

My First Vintage Mac (Macintosh LC 575)
My grandparents are downsizing and found his old LC 575 in the basement. I asked if I could take it and he said he had no use for it lol.
He didn't have a keyboard for it anymore so I had to jump pin 2 and pin 4 on the ADB connector, and it started right up! It appears the hard drive is working, so I'm going to see if I can transfer any files off and explore them.
I'm ordering a keyboard and mouse for it today, and was thinking about picking up an external BlueSCSI so I can write and transfer software to it, but interested in your guys' opinions, and if there's anything else you think I should pick up.

iMac G3 survived 20 years in Yukon shed
My mom has been storing my childhood Mac in her shed here in the Yukon for roughly 20 years.
For context, our winters regularly hit -30c to -50c. This poor thing has been sitting out there through all of it.
Finally brought it home today, plugged it in, and to my absolute disbelief, it fired right up like nothing happened. (I did visually inspect internals before firing it up)
Original hard drive still works, CRT looks fantastic, and even the original keyboard and hockey-puck mouse work perfectly.
It still has Kid Pix, Bugdom, and Nanosaur installed….
The system clock thinks it's January 1, 2004, and I'm still troubleshooting the audio, but otherwise I'm genuinely amazed.
I originally wondered whether it was worth selling, but I've decided to keep it and let my almost 7-year-old daughter experience the same computer I grew up with.
Not bad for a 25-year-old machine that's survived two decades in an unheated shed…

Graphic Card Options 7300/180
Hey Folks.
I recently got my hands on a 7300/180 and have been working to restore it but could use some advice when it comes to graphics cards. I am currently setting it back up with the original 7.5.5 OS but when it comes to compatible graphics cards I'm at a bit of a loss.
From what I see an ATI Rage 128 will work in it if its the Mac specific one but won't work with OS 7.5.5 unless I install 8.6. The other options I see is an ATI Xclaim 3D Plus that is supported under 7.5.5. My issue is I don't see a lot of options that are Mac specific and I've heard mixed reviews about trying to flash the ROM off a PC card.
Can anyone point me in the direction of options? The goal for this machine is more of a retro Mac gaming rig (A-10 Cuba, Red Baron, etc) so I don't need anything massive just a bit of an upgrade off the onboard.

Looking for "Milliways" a 1980s/1990s programmable Macintosh Desk Accessory (DA) calculator
I am trying to find a classic Mac Desk Accessory calculator named "Milliways" from the late '80s (pre-System 7 / System 6 era). Its defining feature was that it allowed you to assign and store custom variables, making it much more advanced than the stock Apple calculator DA. I am looking for the .da file or a shareware disk image (.dsk / .sit) so I can get it running in a classic emulator.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Macintosh SE FDHD issue(?)
Hello! I recently got a Mac SE FDHD and during use I sometimes notice a bright line (did my best to capture it here) quickly moving up and down like it was jittering. Sometimes the whole display kinda twitches (gets pressed by half a centimeter). Any advice on how to fix it? Is this something to be concerned about regarding the analog board? This machines pushing 40 and I wouldn't be surprised if a few caps were tired...
Thanks!

Archiving, Validating and Repairing Apple ][ Disks
I recently picked up a broken unenhanced Apple ][e that came with 173 disks (302 sides). Getting the bits off was the easy part. Trusting them was the hard part. ADTPro will happily hand you a .dsk built from marginal reads, and a sector can come back as garbage without ever throwing an error.
So I built a verification and repair tool (screenshot attached). It started as a batch checker and grew into a full pipeline:
- Filesystem validation: DOS 3.3 VTOC, catalog, track/sector chains and bit map checks, plus ProDOS directories
- Consensus repair: multiple re-reads of each disk merged by majority vote
- Cross-referencing: checks against disk images already floating around online
- Automated boot testing: MAME and AppleWin screen capture
- Sector editor, file editor and launcher
One rule drives the design: nothing read off the disk is ever modified. Everything downstream (merged, repaired, reference copies) can be deleted and regenerated from the untouched originals.
What it found on the latest full run (183 distinct disks):
- 150 OK, 4 suspect, 29 bad
- 61 disks rebuilt by majority vote from multiple reads
- 71 had no standard filesystem, so the tool works hard not to call a protected disk corrupt
- 9 only booted cleanly in one of the two emulators
The series is 12 parts, one a week, covering hardware (seriALL + Floppy Emu + two drives), the multi-read capture strategy, DOS 3.3 validation, consensus repair, protected disks and limits, and automated boot checking. Parts 1 to 3 are up so far.
Blog index: https://norsewanderer.com/blog/blog.html
Some questions for the group:
- How many read passes do you do before you trust a disk image?
- The second drive on this machine (a Rana Elite 3) has a slow drive speed problem. If anyone has fixed that before, I'd love to hear how.
- Let me know if your interested in helping me test the tool :) you can contact me on norsewanderer.com

Good catch, a SE/30 in good condition!
I bought a Macintosh SE/30 this week on a classifieds site. The seller could only tell me that it booted up (with the blinking question mark disk); I knew that was already a good sign. But this morning, upon unpacking, the device is really clean and it's the first time for me that I haven't run into a leaked battery (I also quickly removed the battery that was still inside). The hard drive seems to be dead, but it will soon be replaced by a BlueSCSI.

SuperMac Thunder/24 issue
Hello!
I tried to add a video adapter to my Mac IIci, but there seems to be a conflict between it and my MicroMac Carrera040 Accelerator. The only visible error I see is a "bus error" when the Carrera040 control panel loads with the system start *if* the Carrera040 is on any setting other than OFF/68030. I have confirmed both cards work as expected when installed separately. I did verify that I am in 32-bit memory mode when using 7.5.3.
Any advice is welcome! I'm not sure else I can try.
Macintosh IIci
System 7.6.1 currently, but 7.5.3 does the same
32MB of RAM
Carrera040 with 68LC040 at 40MHz, control panel version 1.8
Thunder/24 with bios version 1.7.0, control panel version 2.7.5
HD is a BlueSCSI

I recreated the old Apple Macintosh notepads!
Every so often, I come across the old Apple Macintosh notepads which someone posts to Reddit or eBay.
I’ve always wanted one but the cost of them seem pretty high and often they are somewhat damaged, so I thought I would have an ago at creating some myself.
The first part (which was the most difficult) was to find a manufacturer to produce blank pads in the original size (4” x 4” x 5 1/4”). Then I had to get pictures of all 5 sides (front, back, sides, and top) of the Macintoshs and edit them slightly so that they would be square with the notepad sides. Afterwards, I printed each side of the notepads with my Omni O1 UV printer. I think the results turned out well! Each notepad is ~1300 pages.
And yes for those interested, I did make extras, if anyone is interested in buying any. There is the original Macintosh (128k), classic, plus & SE. I would ask for $50 CAD for each (~$35 USD) plus shipping. Just note that while I attempt to line up all sides appropriately, due to the nature of the notepads moving slightly and not 100% cut straight each time, their are slight inconstancies.

Free macOS app supports QuickTime VR and QuickTake images
Just wanted to share that I've just released a free app that lets you store, view, and convert QuickTime VR movies and QuickTake 100/150 still photos.
https://www.heidsite.com/vintageviewer/
I worked with QTVR and QuickTake cameras when they first came out and led Macworld magazine's coverage of QTVR. I hated that Apple abandoned those formats and was finally able to do something about it.
A few QTVR pioneers generously helped me test the app and gave me permission to include some of their beautiful panoramas in a sample library that's included with the app.
The website also contains an article with some historical info about QTVR and QuickTake cameras.
Again, free -- no "in-app purchase" stuff. Just a labor of love from someone who hates the idea of vintage image formats disappearing. Hope folks will check it out -- long live QTVR and QuickTake!
(AI disclaimer: Although I've been programming since 1981 — and my first book, written in 1984, was about Apple's infamously discontinued Macintosh Basic — I used Codex to help create this app.)
