Finished Project Mini solo show

Post image
1.6k Upvotes

I'm taking a class right now that requires us to stage a miniature solo show as a bit of curation practice. So obviously I had to make a collection of tiny textiles! I do have a copy of Strickler and Taggart's "Weaving in Miniature," but for this just decided to keep it simple with a "large" motif I could improvise for variation.

I know it's nothing particularly innovative weaving-wise, but can't get over how frigging cute it is turning out to be, lol.

Tutorials and Resources I designed a little 3D-printed tool to make leno weaving less fiddly — and it actually works!

Post image

I've been experimenting with leno weaving on my rigid heddle loom, and while I love the resulting open weave, picking up individual warp threads with a pickup stick or a crochet hook and transferring them gets rather tedious. Especially when thinking about doing this across a 120 cm loom!

Furthermore, I suffer from carpal tunnel syndrom on both wrists, have ankylosing spondylitis and polyneuropathy. Suffice to say, my deterity isn't always up to scratch. Even dabbling with leno on my mere 40cm SampleIt already proved quite a challenge.

So yesterday evening I started experimenting in Tinkercad with a simple idea: what if I could pick up five warp threads at once instead of individually? A couple of prototypes later, I now have a working five-hook leno pickup comb! It catches the lower warp threads, lifts them across the upper threads and allows me to transfer them onto a pickup stick in small sections.

It's not necessarily about weaving faster. For me, the main advantage is reducing the reach, force and repetitive finger movements involved.

My current version is designed for a 30/10 (7.5 dpi) reed and has been tested on my Ashford SampleIt. I've also put together an illustrated PDF showing how I use it. I shared the model on MakerWorld, Printables and Thingiverse for anyone who'd like to give it a try.

Still a working prototype, but I'm rather pleased that something I designed yesterday is already helping me weave today!

I'd be interested to hear whether anyone else has tried making multi-thread leno pickup easier, especially on wider looms.

Finished Project She's done

I opted to go with the less is more philosophy. I have tiaras but they won't work, so flowers it is. I do need a better rod to hang her on than a garden stake. LOL

She mostly matches what I had in my head when I saw the purple tulle. Gotta be flexible when you're making stuff up. The loom is freshly warped and ready to go for the next one. :)

Help See together and add border before or after wet finish?

Post image

These are from my first warp on my rigid heddle (20” vintage Beka). I believe the fiber is all cotton, but some of it came from a thrift store, so I’m not certain. (It feels like cotton, and it’s a little shiny so I think it’s mercerized?) I still need to weave in ends. After that, my understanding is that a gentle wash is good to shrink things together. Should I do that before or after sewing them together and crocheting a border? I’ll be using the rainbow variegated for the border and possibly a decorative join.

I feel like she's missing something. Maybe a tiara. Probably not a face though, this time.

Help Are these the lease sticks? Are these supposed to be tied here?

Post image

Excuse the rigid heddle I'm using as a reed. My next weave uses thicker yarn.

I bought this loom used a few years ago and wove a few projects on it. I haven't touched it in a while and want to get back into it, and have been watching videos to relearn.

Warping back to front seems to require lease sticks to hold the cross in place, which I didn't use before but would like to start using now. Is this one of the lease sticks tied to the front of the loom? The back is tied identically.

This loom came with a lot of accessories, including a raddle and what appears to be the front and back rod. Should there be a rod at the front and back instead of these sticks that were tied there when I bought it? Or should I leave those sticks where they are?

Other Textiles in Wicker

I went to see Wicker yesterday and the textiles in the film were so good. Especially the ones in Peter Dinklage‘s costumes. A friend who is just starting weaving was with me and we both kept commenting.

That’s all; just a weaving in the wild post.

Help Where to buy a floor loom online with good support and replacement parts?

I have been using a rigid heddle loom for two years, and I feel ready to move up to a floor loom. It’s a pretty big investment, so I’d like to buy from a retailer that offers helpful support after the sale rather than just taking the order and moving on.

My biggest concern is getting replacement parts in the future. A floor loom is something I plan to keep for decades, and I want to be sure I can find replacement heddles, reeds, and hardware without waiting months for them to arrive. How did you decide where to buy yours? Did your choice of retailer make a difference?

This is a scarf I wove a few years ago, it was a three shuttle weave (phew) but turned out to be one of my most favourite (yes I'm Canadian, we spell different) .

Finished Project Finished small tote bags and tote bags in progress

I’ve been making little tote bags for a craft fair this December. I’ve been weaving the fabric on my 4 shaft Gallagher Tools table loom, then sewing them using this unassuming bag pattern, Butterick B4410. I like how there is a contrasting band of fabric at the top- it preserves the fancy woven fabric and allows for a clean finish. I enlarged the pattern for some of the bags.

The one I have in progress are going to be similar with the band of fabric at the top, but I am making them more rectangular. I haven’t bought the contrasting fabric yet.

I use a medium weight fusible interfacing on all the pieces except for the lining and handles and I like the body it gives them.

In Search Of Flora and fauna motifs?

I'm weaving this hawk moth dish towel pattern that I found in one of the weaving magazines.

Absolutely in love with it. I started playing with the pattern and my brain has lit right up.

It's got me curious - any recommendations for finding more nature based Flora and Fauna motifs?

Thanks ❤️

Help Knotted joins in yarn spool

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hi, all. I’m weaving dish towels with some Maurice Brassard 8/2 cotton. When warping, I came across a few joins in the yarn on the spool. Little knots. Two got stuck in the heddle and I clipped the yarn and re-tied at the beam. But this lil guy snuck through and will be in the middle of my towel (knowing my luck, right in a float!) Two questions for you gurus out there: 1) Is it usual for high end yarns to have knotted joins in the spool? 2) Do I just weave it in and clip any straggled ends after wet finishing?

Discussion Yarnart Flowers and Ombre Yarns

Hi everyone!
I’ve been messing around with lap/pin/frame looks for a while but recently bought a little 6-inch 3D printed rigid heddle.
I have a stash of ombre/gradient/color-changing yarn cakes from various brands like Hobbii and Yarnart, and my ADHD crocheter brain loves me a yarn that changes color BY ITSELF as you use it. Has anyone tried Yarnart Flowers or Hobbii Dahlia or similar yarn cakes? If you have, could you post your projects? I know that part of weaving is the fun of experimentation, but I’d love some inspiration. And since my new loom is so tiny, I’m trying to come up with different ways to do one long warp so I can get a lot of yardage out of one set-up.

Also, does anyone integrate their weaving into knit or crochet projects, or vice versa? All three crafts can created some pretty different looking fabrics, thicknesses, etc. at their basic levels (single crochet looks markedly different from stockinette, and both of those look different from plain weave). Do you fond yourself making certain parts of a project from one technique because of looks/practicality of use? For example, maybe you would make one part of a project with your loom because it may produce fabric that’s not as stretchy as knit.

I hope all this made sense. Happy to be here!

Tutorials and Resources Pin Loom Clothing

I recently got some pin looms and I am loving it, but I was wondering if there was any resources or anything that could help me with turning the pieces into clothing. I'd like to make shorts, and shirts, and other clothing but have 0 clue where to start. Here are the current pieces I've made thus far. I'm hoping to turn the brown wool squares into a pair of high waisted pants.

Help Old yarn on cones - if I keep unwinding will I ever find an unbroken length?

Post image

If you don't weave this may be a great time to start! You can use anything for weft. If you aren't interested and want to knit or crochet, knot the ends together and make a neat textured cloth. For cotton, I tie ends together and weave towels. I pay little attention to color and try to not join the same colors. Leave a bit of a tail and this is a fun cleaning cloth or face cloth.

It’s just off the loom. Hand spun black welsh mountain fleece (bought as slivers) and grey Gotland fleece (bought as a raw fleece) woven on an Ashford rigid heddle loom.

It’s been washed and is now drying in the sun. I love the simple pattern. It’s a gift for my mum.

Looms Making Artisat tie-up less of a pain?

Post image
2 Upvotes

EDIT: thanks everyone! I got several yards of new Texsolv today & some pegs and am going to make loops as some folks suggested!

I got this loom several months ago, secondhand. It's a Leclerc Artisat and I love it, except the tie-up system. It has texsolv cords attached to the lams that you have to thread the rods through. I don't like how hard it is to make everything the same height, or the fact that I typically have to take everything off one treadle to make one change (like, if I wanted to go from 1-3 to just 1, I have to take both off and put 1 back on)

Anyone have suggestions for could make this faster/easier to do? The (borrowed) looms I've used in the past had texsolv and pegs through a slot, but I'd prefer not to modify the wood

Help Trying to help my husband learn more about this! Why is the tension so loose?

Done on a rigid heddle, 12.5 dent. Fingering weight 100% cotton yarn. Why does this keep ending up so loose? The warp is tight, maybe the weft is too loose? Pic 3 looks like a much better area, is this what he needs to aim for or is this too loose?

Help Warping Twill on RH - Question

So I've recently upgraded from a small single-heddle to an Ashford RH loom and am wanting to try my hand at twill while making a baby blanket for a coworker. My trouble is that I'm out of what I originally had planned for the width and my restock won't be delivered until Monday.

Then I had the thought/question. If I'm putting an extra pair of threads in every other slot, will my final piece be wider than an equivalent plain weave? Or is it just denser? (Or maybe a middle ground?) If it's going to be wider, then I may take some of it off and rewarp it. If not then I'll just sit and stare longingly until Monday
