Meta Seven Simple Actions to Help Birds

For more information, please see this article. Some excerpts from the article, and additional resources are below:

1) Make Windows Safer, Day and Night:

Around 1 billion birds (United States) and 25 million birds (Canada) die every year by flying into glass windows. This includes windows at all levels from low level houses to high rise buildings.

!Window collisions are one of the largest threats to bird populations. However, there are several ways you can help reduce window fatality. Below are some links with steps on how to make your house bird friendly, either DIY or through reputable companies such as the American Bird Conservancy.

What You Can Do

Additional Information

2) Keep Cats Indoors

!Cats are estimated to kill more than 2.4 billion birds annually in the U.S. and Canada. This is the #1 human-caused reason for the loss of birds, aside from habitat loss.

Cats are the greatest direct human-caused threat to birds

3) Reduce Lawn, Plant Natives

Birds have fewer places to safely rest during migration and to raise their young: More than 10 million acres of land in the United States were converted to developed land from 1982 to 1997

Find out which native plants are best for your area

4) Avoid Pesticides

More than 1 billion pounds of pesticides are applied in the United States each year. The continent’s most widely used insecticides, called neonicotinoids or “neonics,” are lethal to birds and to the insects that birds consume.

5) Drink Coffee That’s Good for Birds

Three-quarters of the world’s coffee farms grow their plants in the sun, destroying forests that birds and other wildlife need for food and shelter. Sun-grown coffee also often requires using environmentally harmful pesticides and fertilizers. On the other hand, shade-grown coffee preserves a forest canopy that helps migratory birds survive the winter.

Where to Buy Bird Friendly Coffee

6) Protect Our Planet from Plastic

It’s estimated that 4,900 million metric tons of plastic have accumulated in landfills and in our environment worldwide, polluting our oceans and harming wildlife such as seabirds, whales, and turtles that mistakenly eat plastic, or become entangled in it.

7) Watch Birds, Share What You See

Monitoring birds is essential to help protect them, but tracking the health of the world’s 10,000 bird species is an immense challenge.

North America Scarlet or Vermilion?

Apple says Scarlet. But I took these fotos in Durango, Mexico this past summer. No where near South America, where the Scarlet Flycatcher is found. Before y’all jump at me again and decide that birding isn’t for me: according to Cornell’s All About Birds, there is a taxanomic split in the species AND some major authorities like the IOU, treat the Scarlet Flycatcher as a separate species from the vermilion. That being said, why would Apple ID this as Scarlett and not Vermillion? Location dictates that’s it’s Vermilion. For the kind biologists and others that have been so helpful, what’s the difference? I can’t really find anything online other than maybe a subtle tone in plumage and mask. What about this little guy that that I’ve captured screams Scarlet vs Vermillion? TIA 🙏🏽

This creature has been driving me mad for years. I hear it often but cannot place it. It sounds somewhat like a starting mimicking or a crackle maybe. Help me gain my sanity. Maybe it's not even a bird...

North America House or purple finch?

I’m pretty certain it’s just a house finch but they look very similar at different stages. Southern mn. I see house finches everywhere but haven’t seen any males with the red coloring before and I know purple finches are headed this direction soon. Also, the lines on his belly aren’t as pronounced as a lot of the house finches I see.

I’d welcome any tips or advice on telling the difference too.

Thank you!

Hi there bird reddit! Really sorry if this type of post isn't allowed, happy to delete if so.

I bought these stickers for scrapbooking and I wanted to label the species. I'm fairly sure they're American garden birds, which I am not familiar with. I have tried using google lens but I wanted to ask real people with experience just to be certain. I'm especially stumped with the yellow one, it looks like either an American goldfinch or a Eurasian siskin but the beak doesn't match up?

Thanks in advance ^-^

North America Is this an Oregon type? I only see Slate-colored. I think Pink-sided is possible in this location, but don’t really know how to differentiate. Central South Dakota.

Saw these guys in the Spokane river. The lack of cheek spot is really throwing me off. I'm leaning Barrow's because of the yellow bills and brown/darker heads, but wanted another opinion. (Apologies for the digibins!)

Thanks!

Portland, OR. I originally thought it was a Downy because the bill didn’t seem long enough for Hairy, but I didn’t see black spots on the outer white tail feathers. I think Downy is more common for my area as well.

Found him today while hiking by the Cathedral Lakes in the Tioga area of Yosemite National Park. Looks like a Mallard but he has a distinct blue head. Do Mallards sometimes have blue heads?

It looks like a mini Canada Goose. But its bill seems a bit too long and I'm worried its just a small Canada Goose or something. Located at Montrose Harbor, Chicago, IL
