The brown on the body was alot darker and I can't remember if his beak was actually black. He looked very similar to a yellow crowned sparrow but instead of like flecking of more brown he just had these big white spots on his wings. He was clinging to trees and was very very small. I am located on the California west coast right by the ocean.

This creature has been driving me mad for years. I hear it often but cannot place it. It sounds somewhat like a starting mimicking or a crackle maybe. Help me gain my sanity. Maybe it's not even a bird...

Looks like it could be some sort of sparrow to me though.

Sorry for the blurry photo. This bird was flying around my pond and kind of sounded like an angry chipmunk. It's the size of a blue jay but looks like a huge black-capped chickadee (obviously I know it isn't). I've never seen one like it before so does anyone know what it is?

Sorry, it was hard to photograph. I’m near Cooper river and I sometimes see this bird flying to a nearby pond. It’s pretty high up but looks a bit small/medium sized, smaller than a crow I think. The shape reminds me of a heron but it’s much smaller than a blue heron which I’ve seen flying by at similar height. Also reminds me of cormorant or duck?
Relatively new to birding so hopefully this makes sense ✌️

Apple says Scarlet. But I took these fotos in Durango, Mexico this past summer. No where near South America, where the Scarlet Flycatcher is found. Before y’all jump at me again and decide that birding isn’t for me: according to Cornell’s All About Birds, there is a taxanomic split in the species AND some major authorities like the IOU, treat the Scarlet Flycatcher as a separate species from the vermilion. That being said, why would Apple ID this as Scarlett and not Vermillion? Location dictates that’s it’s Vermilion. For the kind biologists and others that have been so helpful, what’s the difference? I can’t really find anything online other than maybe a subtle tone in plumage and mask. What about this little guy that that I’ve captured screams Scarlet vs Vermillion? TIA 🙏🏽

When I went to Chester on the 12th of August (2026), just after the solar eclipse had happened, alongside the River Dee there was this medium sized duck with a green head and a black and brown body with a little tuft of white on its neck. If you put "ChesterBoat" in maps and look to the right and stop at the bridge you can find where I saw it. I am very curious as to what it is. I did do a Google image search of it alongside using the Merlin id app but they didn't give me a clear answer, with Google saying it could be a hybrid while Merlin didn't come up with anything. Sorry about the bad quality, I had a shitty iPhone before moving to android lol.
If you have any more questions please let me know!

I’ve googled this and can’t find anything about a white breasted nuthatch with a black patch on their chest. Has anyone seen this or have information?

Screenshots from a video I took near Hershey, Pennsylvania. Was thinking Hairy Woodpecker or Downy Woodpecker because Merlin picked up both of those with sound ID but I don’t know how to tell the difference between them.
Sorry if the pictures are too bad quality for identification :( Bird was super high up in the tree and I only had my phone

I’m pretty certain it’s just a house finch but they look very similar at different stages. Southern mn. I see house finches everywhere but haven’t seen any males with the red coloring before and I know purple finches are headed this direction soon. Also, the lines on his belly aren’t as pronounced as a lot of the house finches I see.
I’d welcome any tips or advice on telling the difference too.
Thank you!

In the southern suburbs of Chicago, it was smaller than a mallard and was hanging around some pied-billed grebes.

Warbler flittering in the top canopy, silent. Very shady spot with almost no sun or light to help with photo op. Are these good enough to actually ID?

Sorry for the poor quality photos, but can anybody help ID this little fella? Seen scurrying along the lawns of the resort, in and out of the bushes, hawking for insects, sometimes flying up to catch them in the air. Length 3-4 inches. Upperparts olive-green, white-cream eyestripe, underparts whitish with light/faint grey-brown streaking on throat and chest, and yellow-green wash on belly. Bill small and pointed, and dark just like legs. I consulted my (very old!) field guide and thought paltry tyrranulet, but I’m far from certain. Resorted to ChatGPT but it thought female vermilion flycatcher… Help!

Richmond, VA. At first I thought juvenile coop but the wings look too long and tail looks too short. Thanks for the help.
