Map I'd love to hear what you guys think about my setting.

I'm mainly looking for some constructive criticism on the layout of geography and opinions on the premise in general.

For some background:
This planet is a kind of fortress world. The ring wall spanning the entire mapped out area (around 1/4 of the planet's surface) is the width of a small country and reaches above the atmosphere of the planet. Central to this is the tower, massive in its own right, piercing further into the heavens. The planet outside of this wall is dead. Irradiated, stripped of all organic matter, nothing can survive there. No one knows who built these great structures, but no matter where you are in the world, they are landmarks you cannot miss. The whole mega-structure is situated toward the northern hemisphere, leading to a wide variety of climates, with the northernmost edge almost reaching the north pole.

The inhabitants of this planet have over a dozen millennia of history behind them, most of which is unknown or lost to time. A wide variety of sapient species coexist (for the most part) here, and the general technological level is that of the late middle ages to early renaissance.

That's pretty much all I have for now in terms of specifically world-building.

Map Help, my map is too big!

Post image
1.1k Upvotes

I recently decided to create a full-sized, scale-accurate map of my fantasy novel's world. Up to this point, I've been using a smaller map that's basically within the black square (since those are the locations relevant to the main plot). I'm still playing with some of the details, but this is at least accurate in terms of size.

I'm running into a big problem, though. The world's premise revolves around how 12 godlike Archdragons (~1 for each major country) rule the different nations and enforce a permanent "medieval stasis" to keep control over the population after a devastating war that left mankind in ruins. But... the world is so big, and I have so much empty space I didn't account for!

What do you guys think I should do? Add more dragons? Add more independent nations? Make the existing nations bigger? Or is this fine, actually? Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Map The Map for a story I’m writing. Please ask me questions about anything. I just really wanted to share my world.

This is the map for my story that asks one question: in an uncaring universe, how do we keep going? The setting takes place roughly 250 years after a prolonged WW2 (which is when the cataclysm happened and fucked up the entire planet because of Fortis Bombs). Everything revolves around the concepts of the indomitable human spirit and defiance. Humans in my world have the potential to awaken a supernatural power by defying an ongoing doom (to them or someone else) or a law of the universe. That power is called Fortis. Using Fortis comes at a cost, the user’s body will be damaged to the same degree that they used their powers. A speedster will experience torn ligaments, muscles ripping clean off the bone, burns from air resistance, etc. There’s a lot more lore to this world so please ask me questions. Please please please please.

I made a map in Inkarnate. It’s my concept art of the entire planet’s landscape and I felt a lil too lazy to TRULY COMMIT to the realism. Now I’m looking to redditors to freely insult me and my work alongside with some criticism and what I should do to make it better/realistic.

Go at it people. Give me emotional damage 👏

Map "The Disk" Is the visual novel and passion project i've been working on for a year and it occurs completely inside an Alderson Disk after the heat death of the universe.

The disk is a massive petastructure created to house the inhabitants of the end times.

It's composed of several parts i'll briefly explain:

•Permafrost barrier : Several light years long, several million kilometers tall. Impassable wasteland. The border that separates infinite vacuum from the last traces of life in all of existence.

•Habitable zone: Everything between -80°C and 99°C of temperature. Perfect for 98% of all universal non extremophile lifeforms.

•Eternal Oceans: Impossibly deep oceans made to simulate the pressure of super earths and water planets.

•Lightyear peaks: Multiple lightyear tall formations generated by the tectonic movement of the disk during 14 ■■■■■■■■■■ years. They act like giant cysts in nature and are full of boiling blood and pus.

•100°C Barrier: Inner zone closest to the Luminary Core. A gargantuan scorching desert that contains 1% of all life forms.

•Wall of Cinders: dead tissue and ash that borders the space between life and the luminary core.

•God's flesh: Base building material of the Disk mostly based on an alloy of Ringed NeoNeutronium and the cartilage and bones of long dead tetradimensional deitys.

•Discal star: Red giant in a loop of eternal helium fusion due to a white hole in it's core.

•Discal Singularity: Gigantic Black hole unnafected by hawking radiation trough an assortment of nano wormholes located in its surface

Luminary Core: Home of the Luminary. Ascended humans made entirely out of ringed energy.

I'd love to answer any questions and see what you guys think about it :D

The story is mostly a blend of sci-fi/cosmic horror/ and a sprinkle of indomitable human spirt too

My inspirations are: Stellaris/TTGL/Dragon Ball/Invincible/Rimworld/Bloodborne and a little bit of Monument Mythos

Map Ruins - Palace of Waterways - Nominated for Cartography Award

Post image

Hi! I’m Guillaume Tavernier, a French fantasy illustrator specializing in maps.

Austerion is a medieval fantasy world I invented. It has strange creatures, multiple regions, and lots of adventure locations. These palace ruins covered in cobwebs have been overrun by white birds. But of course, they aren't the only inhabitants…

Here’s the lore:

Al-Bendari’s palace once supplied the entire kingdom with water. It’s said to have been destroyed by a demon, and the souls of the dead supposedly haunt the place. Since then, the water has become poisoned and cursed. Legends say the palace hides a tomb containing both treasure and the key to removing the curse. Many heroes have tried to find it, but none has ever returned. At the bottom of the chasm, a strange light sometimes shimmers around the edges of the canal. Some say it’s just fireflies, others that it’s the one responsible for the cataclysm.

A magician wants to find the tomb inside the ruins to retrieve a magic scroll she believes must be inside it. She claims her goal is to free the magical being from its curse.

Fellow worldbuilders, I have some very big news. A little dream of mine has come true! My artbook of fantasy maps has been nominated for the cartography award in the Ennies (the biggest role-playing game awards).

You can see all the nominees here, there is a lot of great work (maps and more):

Map World maps used by Land-dwellers vs Underwater civilizations

Wanted to share maps of my world Cypheros (that I use to run DnD and Pathfinder games in).

The word Kramor is shorthand for all ocean and sea peoples, plus seafaring  giants.

Giants are the greatest and oldest sailors in this world and make their home port at The Grand Summit of Kramor,  From which they command colossal, island-sized god-engines. Only three of these ancient machines remain operational.

The dotted line marks the route of the largest god-engine, The Dragon, which circumnavigates the world once every year. Because its course is so consistent, the Kramor know not to build in its path, and the giants do their best to keep it clear of shallower settlements.

The Dragon is vital to global trade, and its route appears on almost every map. In many parts of the world, people even measure the passing of the year by its arrivals and departures.

I shifted the Kramoran map with the summit at the center, as this would be the cultural heart of the seas and it's surrounds are quite populated. The currents shown on the map function almost like highways for nomadic aquatic peoples, though they're somewhat simplified here.

Open to any thoughts

Map Thoughts or questions about the map for my first book?

It's a dome arcology, current as of 2263. The surface of the Earth is a blasted post-nuclear hell-scape, but through sheer grit, determination and some sketchy alien tech, we've managed to build mighty dome-cities over some of the ruins. This particular dome was the first to be constructed, which is why its got a space elevator (we did a lot of this from orbit or beyond, after the war).

The locations are callouts of distinct locales that the characters visit throughout the story. New Toronto is part of a cluster of domes in the region, but is the largest by far.

The top surface of the city is where the majority of the population lives, but the underground is an immense network of transit-ways, recycling facilities, power generation, water renewal and criminal hideouts--plus the remains of the old city beneath. It's got all the hallmarks of cyberpunk megacities and sci-fi megastructures that everyone knows and loves. It even has a lake (though its more of a giant reservoir).

What would you guys add or change, if anything? Much appreciated!
