Success! DIY - 5 iterations later, I finally built a truly raccoon-proof stray cat feeder
Iāve been feeding a few stray cats in my neighborhood for yearsāproviding clean water, food, treats, and heated shelters for the winter.
However, my biggest challenge has been local wildlife stealing the food. The primary culprits are some very chubby, extremely clever raccoons who made it their life mission to defeat every feeder I built.
After a lot of trial and error, I finally have a setup that works 100%. Here is the progression of my builds and how I got here:
The Failed Prototypes
Attempt 1: App-Controlled Automatic Feeder
Setup: Petlibro locking automatic feeder paired with a security camera for motion alerts so I could unlock it remotely via app when a cat arrived.
Result: Worked for exactly 1 day until the raccoons realized they could brute-force the door open.
Attempt 2: Adding a Remote Water Sprayer
Setup: Added a remote-triggered water sprayer near the feeder to blast the raccoons when they approached.
Result: Worked for a week. Then the raccoons figured out the spray angle, dodged the water, and dragged the entire feeder away. (Dammit!)
Attempt 3: Cinder Block Bunker
Setup: Anchored the feeder inside a cinder block base so it couldn't be moved or tipped over.
Result: Stopped them from dragging it, but required me to constantly monitor live video to trigger the water sprayer. If I missed a notification, they still broke into the hopper and stole the food.
Attempt 4: Slide-Out Drawer Feeder + SwitchBot
Setup: Switched to a feeder with a slide-out tray (keeping food completely enclosed until open) shielded by cinder blocks. Because it required two manual button pushes on top to unlock and open, I mounted two SwitchBot Bots running a custom scene in the app to automate the sequence when I saw a cat on camera.
Result: Huge success! I was able to remove the water sprayer completely, and it kept raccoons out for weeks. Unfortunately, the internal feeder motor eventually broke. Replacing it would cost $90, so I decided to build a more permanent, heavy-duty version.
š Attempt 5: The Winning Raccoon-Proof Setup (Current Build)
For this build, I wanted something completely indestructible that didn't rely on plastic cat feeder mechanisms:
The Enclosure: I took a heavy-duty plastic milk crate and backed it up flush against a large planter so the rear couldn't be accessed. I weighted down the top and sides with cinder blocks to prevent it from moving or being breached.
The Door: Using an oscillating multi-tool, I cut an opening in the front of the crate and installed a weatherproof metal automatic chicken coop door. The vertical sliding metal door is designed to keep out foxes and raccoons, making it impossible for them to pry open.
The Automation: I attached SwitchBot Bots to the door's remote/control panel to trigger the door to slide open and closed remotely via app whenever a cat comes to eat.
Inside: The cat food sits in an elevated bowl inside the crate, giving cats easy access to lean in while keeping the food protected from the elements.
Results - Zero raccoons have been able to breach or pry open this door. The metal door panel and solid crate framing completely eliminate any leverage they used to rely on.
Hopefully, this design helps anyone else dealing with persistent trash pandas while trying to care for local kitties in need.
