Discussion Letting users remove posts.

Hello everyone,

As you are aware, on reddit moderators approve and remove content and subreddit subscribers can report to us.

Today we'd like to start an experiment here on r/Cats where we will give trusted subreddit participants access to a keyword that will allow them to remove posts.

When you exceed a certain level of subreddit specific comment karma and when you have a CQS score of highest you can now use the keyword "!remove" to pull a post from our feed. (Spelled exactly like that, case sensitive, top-level comment only as opposed to a reply to a comment.)

This will work for posts only, not for comments.

There are some things to keep in mind:

  • When you comment here on an account that exceeds the limit automod will assign you a special flair class and send you a message explaining you can now use the keyword.

  • Users will keep their existing flair text. However, changing your flair to a different pre-made flair option will also reset the flair class giving you access to this removal ability. Next comment you make it will be re-applied and you will be sent another message.

  • We are sent a modmail when a subscriber removes a post, explaining what post was removed and who used the keyword. Please do not abuse this ability. If posts are removed for bad reasons we will take away your ability to remove posts.

  • That means, use this keyword if you see spam or other rulebreaking posts only.

  • Please keep in mind that it is currently very popular to accuse posters of making an AI generated post. An accusation does not mean that what they are being accused of is true. Human beings can detect AI at 60% accuracy, just a little better than the results of flipping a coin. An AI can only accurately detect AI content if an AI watermark is attached to the image. It is best not to remove a post just because someone is accused of something. Use your own best judgement and our rules as your litmus, not what other people are saying.

  • Since this is a test run, when I ran a very minor proof of concept trial, a few people have already been assigned this special flair class who have not been sent a message. /u/kiaeej, /u/chux4w, /u/MilmoWK, /u/ms_rdr, /u/Electronic_Ad357, /u/WhiteMouse42097, /u/BeMoreKnope, /u/bluecedarood, /u/Robobanditos, congratulations, you can remove posts.

  • Should you for any reason not want to have this ability then you should send us a modmail after receiving the message from automod. That way we can exempt you in our code.

  • Initially we are going to monitor how this functions closely so we can see if we need to make changes to the threshold level for activation.

  • Nothing will change about the way we handle user-made reports on content. This is not a replacement for that, but an addition. If you see rulebreaking content of any kind, please report.

We hope that this change will be something that has a positive influence on the content on this subreddit.

Thank you for reading, and thank you all for making this subreddit a great place to be

Advice Is this my missing cat?

Post image
5.2k Upvotes

My cat, Milo, ran away about 6 years ago. After months of searching at all hours of the day and night, setting traps that caught anything but him, and lots and lots of tears we had to give up the search. Within the last few months I’ve seen a cat that looked like him in the alley behind my house but only ever from the side, so I convinced myself there was no way. Yesterday, I saw the cat straight on and I am convinced it’s him. What’s everyone think? Annnnnnd any advice on getting him to come home?

Left is him before he ran away and right is the cat I saw

EDIT TO ADD: Milo also had a black stripe down his back with a black tail tip- so does this cat. It’s really the stripe placement, the white around his eyes and that back stripe making me think there’s a chance it’s him.

Tapeworm (white) and margaret (black and white.) They're turning a year old soon, and they've gotten so big, but they haven't changed much. I found them in my yard at eight weeks old. When I first took them in and they were still skittish, they would sprint and hide in corners whenever I entered the bathroom, where i'd set up a temporary living space. If they were in separate corners, margaret would scream, and tapeworm would immediately come running for her, even if he was scared of my presence. It's been nearly a year now, and they're still practically glued together.

Advice Is he enjoying his nebulizer?

4.4k Upvotes

We started a nebulizer treatment and he’s doing very well. He didn’t like the noise the first time but he got to eat wet food in there so he couldn’t be bothered by the machines noise. When he finishes eating he sits by the ”entrance” very calmly and purrs for the remaining time that the machines needs to be on. When I open the door for him he doesn’t get out immediately but sits there and purrs for a while (machine is off). The only thing that makes me question if it’s out of enjoyment is his pupils, they are huge! What do y’all think? Is he purring out of enjoyment or trying to calm himself down?

Mourning/Loss I feel like I sent a mom and 4 kittens to their death

My husband and I just moved into our house in April. We had seen the mom cat hanging around, and we decided to start leaving some food out for her. She looked like she had kittens, but we couldn’t find them.

Fast forward to a few weeks ago, I see a little kitten out of the corner of my eye. Naturally, my husband and I run outside to say hello. There are 6 total, and they aren’t completely feral, but definitely don’t like us yet. We hadn’t completely won over the mom, but she was slowly coming around to us. We kept treats, wet food, toys, everything on hand to make sure she was healthy for her babies.

At this point we think the kittens are about 6 weeks old. We planned to catch them and adopt them out. The mom seemed fine, but we knew she was gonna spend her whole life pregnant (she had already been pregnant 2-3 times since we moved in). So we organized a spay and release back at our house. She was moving her nest further away from the house, so we decided to catch them before we couldn’t find them again.

We trap the kittens and mom, and we decide to keep 2. The next morning they are picked up and taken to the shelter. We are so happy things went so smooth and ask to be updated when she’ll be back. We name our babies Collette and Marvin, and the mom Minerva. After checking the shelter website, we find her listed next to her kittens. A few days later, we checked and they were all gone. We were so happy because we assumed they were all adopted.

Today, we got a devastating email. Minerva and the 4 kittens had passed from a panleukopenia outbreak at the shelter. Just liked that, gone. We are absolutely heart broken. It feels like we gained their trust, and sent them to die. We did everything we could, and got the worst possible outcome. The neighbors were so happy we were taking care of her. It’s hard to not feel responsible, and I know at the end of the day we aren’t, but fuck man.

Pictures of the lovely lady and babies, with our little ones at the end. Marvin and Collette will never want or need for a single thing. We will make sure of it.

ETA: Thank you all so much. This situation has made me want to give up helping strays, but the kind words here have changed my mind 💓

My kittens are in the vet 😞

We got 2 kittens on friday (today is tuesday) and they're so young, theyre 6 weeks old, rescue farm kittens. I know theyre too young to be away from mum but my vet had no choice, the farmer wanted them "gone".

They got them onto solid food, they were good. My little boy, mojo, is still good (mostly. He has very soft stool) but my little girl, xena.... shes just not right. Shes the runt of the litter, very sleepy, very velcro. Doesn't play.

Mojo is twice her size and doing normal kitten things. Getting into mischief, curious, playing, biting, etc. Xena is just....there.

Last night we brought them in, the vet gave her fluids and both of them a glucose shot. Not much better after.

This morning, she refused to eat. So we brought them right in and now theyre waiting to be examined and monitored.

I feel so bad. Im so worried I did something wrong or shes just failing to thrive. Im so so worried 😞😞😞

Mourning/Loss Lost my little buddy Anakin today

Thumbnail

1.8k Upvotes

Just over two years ago my wife and I took in Anakin from another family who didn’t want him. Neither of us had any experience with cats except when around other people’s cats so we did lots of research to give him the best life.

We had been pet free for a few years, we previously had a dog that we took in from another family that didn’t want the dog anymore. I’d been talking about adopting a cat but my wife was unsure as she had the impression they were aloof but after getting to know another friend’s cat she was more comfortable with the idea.

I am AuDHD and have hEDS so I have a lot health issues and partly why we chose a cat was because I wouldn’t need to take him outside and I work self employed in and out of the house while my wife works full time and I was lonely at home some.

We think Anakin was around 4 when we brought him home but he was a stray that ended up at a shelter before the previous family adopted him so our information was limited. While he was still a stray he lost all his teeth except for his 4 canines but was otherwise healthy, though looking back at his old photos he was quite chubby when we first brought him home.

He was very timid at first and would hide a lot. We didn’t force him out or anything. We would occasionally come near his hiding spot and gently talk to him and sit facing with our backs to him and let him decide to approach. It didn’t take long for him to come up to us and enjoy pets and being near us but any sort of activity, noise, or visitors would have him hiding.

Pretty soon Anakin learned that I napped every afternoon and he would come and nap with me, if I didn’t go nap at the usual time he’d come and tap me with his paws. At first just on his cat bed on the floor and then eventually he started coming up on the bed and would either lay right next to me or on the other side of the bed. I think I annoyed him when I fell asleep, I shift around a lot when asleep, because we eventually settled a routine where he’d come and lay next to me when I first got in bed to relax for a bit and then when I’d pull the covers up and try to sleep he’d usually move to the other side corner of the bed. At night he started sleeping on our bed at my wife’s feet.

We never got him to be very playful. We tried all sorts of toys but he pretty much ignored all of them. We got a cat nip banana toy that he’d nibble on and groom for about 3 minutes and that was the most he ever did. He really liked to be around us though. Whenever we watched tv he’d come and lay next to us. If my wife came home while I was napping he’d go lay with her and watch tv and then as soon as he heard me start waking up he’d come back and harass me or wait at the bedroom door if it happened to be closed.

For months we could tell he wanted to lay on our lap on the couch. He would come and put his front paws on our leg and make biscuits and pur. We‘d gesture and vocally invite him up but then he’d turn around and lay down next to us. A couple times we tried to place him on our lap but he’d get off and lay next to us. I don’t remember how long that went on for but it was quite a while, several months at least I think. Then one day he laid down on my wife’s lap and from then on he’d come lay on us.

My wife and I are both pc gamers and he started jumping up on our desks and walking back and forth in front of us for attention. We bought new matching desks that had a small elevated shelf thinking he’d like to lay under the shelf so we set the desks up with the shelf on each one touching and put a blanket under it and he started laying up between us on our desks. When he wanted attention he started doing the cutest thing, he’d be curled up by us on the blanket and then he’d slowly lift his head up and lean all the way back so his head was upside down and he’d just stare at us. If we made eye contact he’d get up and come stand or lay down right in front of us. If we ignored him he’d curl back up after a minute and then he’d wait a few minutes and repeat. He’d wait less and less time between doing this if we didn’t acknowledge him and eventually he would just get up and stand in front of us.

Over this past year he started having health issues. We had lots of testing done, nothing was conclusive for a while and none of what we were recommended helped him improve. It was a lot of work and it was hard to see him sick. His pancreas wasn’t producing enzymes and we had recently started a powder for it. It seemed like he was maybe improving.

Sunday night I went to bed around midnight and he was sleeping peacefully on the couch. He died some time during the night. One of his hiding spots was under the couch and my wife found him on the floor near the spot he usually used to get under the couch.

I‘ve loved all my pets over the years but I really adored Anakin. At some point my wife and I started calling him my little buddy because he seemed to have a really close bond with me. He had some really goofy facial expressions with his missing teeth.

To my little buddy Anakin, you were so gentle and sweet, and I already miss you so much.

Mourning/Loss My sweet girl

5,800 days together.

The hardest, most gut wrenching decision of my life to say goodbye to her. She took her last breath around 12:20, wrapped in a robe I’ve had since I brought her home 15 years ago.

She was sick this entire year. Possible tumor or nasal polyps, both of which I wasn’t willing to investigate due to her age and small weight. The last 10 months have been up and down. We’d do a round of antibiotics and she’d improve. Then go downhill all over again. Her entire right side of her face was snotty and sneezing and quite miserable. She’d been breathing out of the side of her mouth for a while and despite the “good” days, ultimately I couldn’t let her suffer any longer. We had a lot of good days, a ton of great years.

She was the easiest cat. Part Siamese and it showed- she was sassy. She was the definition of a lap cat. If you had a lap, she was in it. She was beautiful and picky, but boy was she easy.

I’ve cried enough tears to fill a river but I want to note the relief I felt after saying goodbye, knowing she wasn’t going to suffer or experience any more pain. I will mourn her every day until my last, but I am so fortunate to have had her.

Thinking of all who have been down this journey. It’s my first and won’t be my last. My heart is broken.

Advice I’m lost on what to do for this cat.

I feel absolutely terrible at the moment for this cat. The original plan was for my girlfriend to adopt a cat so it could come with us when we moved out. Since last February her family has had a cat just like this one in the pictures.

My girlfriend’s mom has sent my girlfriend photos of dogs to adopt so the cat they have can have a buddy. So we figured that a cat would be more low-maintenance. So there was an adoption place nearby we went to and loved this little guy. We decided that we would take him and paid up on the fees and all.

Once we let her family group-chat know that he was coming with us, everyone was happy but her mom. Her mom started freaking out saying she won’t help my girlfriend ever again and will let the cat out if brought home.

This week he is at the vet and ready to be picked up sometime this week, although it’s not looking like we can bring him to my girlfriend’s place. I’m really thinking of begging my parents to allow him in ours (they’re not usually down for pets especially cats).

What are the ways that you convinced your parents to get a cat or what do you think the another option would be? I really want to keep this lil guy.
