I hate that I'm posting this, but my emotions are staring to make me question my logic, and I just need to write this out, maybe get a couple opinions... I know the answer to my question, I'm just having a hard time accepting it at the moment.
This is Loki, and these pictures are from 10-25-2026. Loki is now 14 years old, and having medical issues.
About 3 years ago, he was diagnosed with the onset of laryngeal paralysis, nothing too bad yet, but it's progressing. Almost 1 year ago, he started having seizures. The cause of the seizures is a mass in his brain. We've been treating the seizures, but there is nothing we could do about the underlying cause. The Vet said we can treat the seizures, and the meds will help until they don't. Luckily he's been seizure free for almost 9 months now... However, I know it's only time until the meds stop working. Over the last couple months, I've carefully watched him, and overall he hasn't been doing horrible, he has been fading. his mobility is decreasing, his pain has been increasing, his breathing is getting worse, but in general he seems like he's still interested in life. After taking the above pictures, he wanted to go on a longer walk, and we took an almost 1/4 mile walk, and if he had his way, it would have been longer.
However, the Sunday before last, this bottomless pit of food disposal, nearly stopped eating entirely. He was down to less than 20% his normal food consumption. I also had a very hard time getting him to take his meds. Anti-Seizure meds are also something you can't miss, as it can trigger a seizure. I tried everything I could think of to get him to eat. It wasn't that he wasn't hungry, he just wouldn't eat. I'd make him some rice and turkey, he'd eat it the first time, but not the next day... On Wednesday, I called the vet, and they were able to move his appointment up and see him the next day. We got some Hill's Prescription diet food, and some other things, and he's now eating again....
But there was some really bad news as well. The Xray revealed a sizable spleenic tumor. The Vet is unsure if Loki's appetite issues is a direct result of the tumor, or if it was just a stomach bug and we found the tumor because of it.
Here's my question/point of contention... The Vet implied that surgery to remove it might still be an option... I know this tumor is a ticking time bomb that could go off in hours or months, but when it does, it'll be game over. However, I just don't see this as a good option. He's 14. would he even survive the surgery? would he ever recover? with his underlying medical condition would it even be reasonable to consider? I said no at the time, as I don't want to put him through that just because I want him to live longer. But now he's bounced back from the not eating, I'm beginning to doubt myself, as if the Vet thinks it's an option... Am I just being stupid for even second guessing that decision? Yeah, typing it out does make it a bit more clear that I am making the right call, but I would love to hear your thoughts.
