GEAR What 7 years of sobriety looks like šŸ˜šŸ˜…

Post image
2.4k Upvotes

Covid had me in a pretty dark place but I’m proud to say I haven’t touched the drink in just about 7 years. To say it was the best decision I’ve ever made is an understatement - who knows where I’d be today. I picked up a guitar at 12 and it’s always been an outlet for me. Unfortunately, I slowly transition from guitar and music to booze and hadn’t played consistently for a long time.

Welp, now you could say I’m addicted to music more than I ever have been. Play every day, in a band, GAS is in full effect šŸ˜‚. Do I owe my sobriety in part to music? Hell yea I do. I even owe some of it to all you fine people putting up with my stupid gear questions throughout the years.

Just wanted to share my collection. If anyone is struggling, stay strong. You got this. Shit, message me if you want to talk.

DISCUSSION I want a Novo Serus J, talk me out of it( I can’t afford one anyway)

As the title, I have mad GAS for one of these, I have the usual Stratocaster, Gibson les Paul and a epiphone Sheraton but I don’t have an offset or a guitar with p90’s problem is they start at 4 k, just watched Phil Knight strip one and he didn’t seem that blown away by it, I can’t really justify sinking 4 k into a guitar, especially as I’m a casual user but!!! I might, tell me why I shouldn’t buy one and what would be a good substitute

GEAR NGD - Epiphone Les Paul Modern Purple Burst

I've added this beauty to the collection and I am f'king stoked. I went in with the intention of buying a Squire Classic Vibe Tele but the bridge just didn't feel right, I guess I'm an LP guy?

I didn't think the Ultra Modern weight relief would make a big difference, but it really does. The difference between my Epi LP without weight relief is really noticeable.

Fingerboard Material: Ebony

Fingerboard Radius: 304.8 mm / 12 in

Neck Material: Mahogany

Fret Count: 22

Frets: Medium Jumbo

Nut Material: Graph Tech

Bridge: LockTone Tune-O-Matic

Tailpiece: LockTone Stop Bar

Tuning Machines: Grover Locking Rotomatic

Bridge Pickup: ProBucker 3

GEAR Goodwill Find $20 1933 Gretsch

Thumbnail gallery
4.0k Upvotes

I was dropping some stuff off at Goodwill and decided to browse the aisles as long as I was there. I came across this guitar, which was pretty amazing. Plus, it was only $20. On the headstock is stamped the number 3598. It also came with the floating microphone. The badge is really neat. I’ve never seen that before.

A friend and I did some research and it looks like it’s a 1933 Gretsch Orchestra Model 50. I had a solid arch top that was hand carved. The neck is straight, and it plays really well.

Just shows you what some people will get rid of.

We have a 3 year old and I can't trust to leave the stand out exposed and I get tired of pulling cases out.

I have a String Swing coming but until then, this is my solution.

Easy to grab, and protected.

GEAR I Really Enjoy Seeing These Everyday When I Wake Up

The Ibanez and the tele were gifts from my dad, who passed away last year. The jaguar is my workhorse and my pride and joy. This is the first thing I see when I open my eyes every morning. It might not be much but it’s everything to me.

NEWBIE Is playing a tune and then playing the same tune with a capo on the fifth fret considered harmonizing?

I tried doing that and combing the two tracks. They sound ok, but some notes sound out of key.

QUESTION Why? Why must this happen?

We amateurs all know that feeling. Sitting there on your bed playing random shit on a random tuesday afternoon and then it happens. The most beautiful, soul ascending pinch harmonic ever. On accident.

You try to recreate it to no avail. Minutes and minutes go by as you try to mimic what you did to achieve such perfection. And then it never happens again.

And here i am, typing this out in the slight hope that those who were the first to even conceive the idea of a 6-string, the one and only John Guitars, might give an answer to the question all of us have been asking.

Why must we go through this? Why?

QUESTION How do you get better at picking up songs flawlessly by ear?

I need to clarify that I don’t mean picking up the general chordal or melodic structure of the song. I can do that comfortably, but when it comes to precise techniques employed in the original, I’d just work around it with something in that vein but more efficient for the ways my fingers work. For example, Hendrix may play a lick that feels inefficient for my own fingers, so they just do their own thing that somehow works but doesn’t sound like Hendrix. That’s what bugs me out.

I have been playing the guitar for about 3 years now, fully self taught. I have this habit of being able to pick up songs quickly by ear, but I don’t play it how it’s meant to be played.

Unsure why this happens. I never went through guitar lessons, don’t know how to read tabs, so tutorials don’t really work on me.

The video below is me just playing my version of Hendrix’s ā€œBold as Loveā€ and ā€œLittle Wingā€ during a noodle session. I don’t think it sounds similar to Hendrix at all, which is what bugs me out about it.

Did not realize this dude was like that on guitar. Currently learning the Ride Like the Wind outro solo and my fingers are in immense pain. I would’ve assumed he had a session guitarist but that was all him. Very underrated guitarist.

Whats the take on bands with no original members left? Are they then just classed as a tribute or covers band?

Eg:

Molly Hatchet, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Foreigner, Little River Band, Yes, Quiet Riot etc.

PLAY Taking on Django's "Minor Swing" on an electric hollowbody — how do you handle the Gypsy Jazz phrasing on modern gear?

Ciao a tutti!

DISCUSSION Solo I recorded on a new tune, hope you like it!

• Upvotes

Here’s a (mimed) recording of a solo I wrote and recorded recently on a new tune of mine. Wanted something melodic and sat with this section for a couple weeks to work out the sections of the solo. Guitar is a 72 think line tele, into a Dunes>Avalanche Run>fender blues jr, captured by an AKG 214 mic. Recording and mixing all done by me in my little home studio. Hope you like it! I’ll probably re record it a bit cleaner but any feedback is welcome!
