AITA for telling my stepdad his former mistress isn’t welcome around my family after he started dating her again “weeks” after my mom died?
My mom died June 7, 2026, after battling ALS. She and my stepdad were married for over 35 years. Four months later, I’m still grieving her every day.
Recently, at my daughter’s birthday celebration, he made a comment that made me wonder whether he was seeing someone. I brushed it off.
Tuesday night, he texted asking to meet for lunch. I asked if everything was okay, and he said yes. Around 3 a.m. Wednesday, I woke up convinced he was going to tell me he was dating someone.
That afternoon, I texted and asked. He immediately called and said, “Well, what if I am?”
I said I knew that conversation would happen eventually, but I’d imagined it closer to a year later. I acknowledged everyone grieves differently and I don’t know what it’s like to be in his shoes.
Then he said I knew the woman and told me to guess.
That’s when it hit me: Roxanne.
He cheated on my mother with her in 2021 and again in 2023. His infidelity goes back to the late ’90s, although not all of it involved her. In 2023, I confronted him and told him enough was enough.
My stepdad is also a pastor. He counsels other people on their marriages.
When he confirmed it was Roxanne, I was stunned. She knowingly participated in an affair that caused my mother tremendous pain. My mom specifically told him she never wanted him speaking to her again.
I asked when they reconnected. He said late June or early July, roughly three weeks after my mom died. Now I wonder whether they ever stopped talking, although I have no proof.
He said my mother forgave him before she died. She told me that, too. But he also claimed she would be okay with him dating Roxanne. That contradicts everything my mother ever told me about her.
I reread my mom’s texts from 2023 and remembered her heartbreak. Forgiving him for cheating does not mean she approved of a future relationship with his affair partner.
I called my mom’s best friend, whom she confided in about his affairs. Before I named anyone, she said, “It better not be Roxanne.” She was shocked when I confirmed it. I asked whether my mom would have been okay with it, and she said absolutely not.
I know I cannot control who he dates. But I can decide who I welcome into my home and around my children. I told him I disagree with this relationship and Roxanne is not welcome at events or holidays I host.
Then I learned he declined our family Thanksgiving, which my brother and his partner are also attending, because he’s going to Roxanne’s family Thanksgiving instead.
I’m furious. I’m grieving my mom while feeling like someone who hurt her is being welcomed into her place. Part of me wants to tell everyone because I’m tired of protecting his reputation, especially as a pastor.
AITA for telling him his former mistress isn’t welcome in my home or at family celebrations I host?
