Went through my memories and found a video of Flea performing to a crowd of about 10 people in Darwin in 2019. The whole event was shambles and mismanaged badly, surprised he even made it on stage to be honest
Hey guys, thought I’d post in here and roll the dice, I’ve only just discovered this reddit thread recently.
I go by the name I AM D. Have been doing this now for a minute. Thought I’d post this video just to give people an idea of the style of production etc I’m making. If this is your kinda lane, or something you’re interested in and wanna hear different beats etc.. feel free to send me a dm.
Basically just looking to expand and meet more people trying to make some dope shit.
I also mix and master. Can get whole songs finished and done, a one stop shop..Especially if you’re in a different part of the country from Brisbane.. If you have the capabilities of recording your own vocals and can send stems that’s all we need to work.
If you wanna reach out to see if we can get some work in, or even if you just wanna say Wattup and have a chat. Holla!
After my last post (currently boasting an impressive 2 upvotes to 50 comments). I realise I may have overestimated the average user on this sub's investment in the contemporary Australian rap scene.
While some of you know the current and admittedly confusing use of "UDG" or "UG" (Underground) as a term referring to specific stylistic choices in music. most people—including myself—are or were confused about the term's real meaning.
I will explain it as I have come to understand it.
If most of this genre resides underground, what does the "UDG/UG" name even delineate?
"UDG/UG" is a broad descriptor for a current movement in hip-hop that has exploded in the last year and a half, across the UK and then subsequently Australia. Reading from the UK gives us insight to the defining aspects of Aus UDG it's sister from over the pond.
The definitions are equally applicable to the Australian scene, including the style and influences. However in Australia, "UDG" terminology is used more than "UG". This can be seen in the most popular page in the Aus UDG scene unsurprisingly called aus.udg.
Many of the artist I will reference in this post follow and engage with this page. The owner is 20-year-old Shakti, a UDG superfan who goes by the username shacomate. Something of a legend in the sydney local scene, for is meme ability at first; then later his dedication to pushing the UDG forward via shows and running his UDG community page and hosting/sharing songs for others.
"The genre is sometimes simply referred to as "UK Underground".\18])\19])Much like "indie" rock, the term"underground" is often used to refer to the genrestylisticallyrather than denoting popularity." -Wikipedia
here is another good article about the UK UDG scene that explains its influences.
Some of the biggest names in the Aus UDG wave include:
Ribby 247: Transitioned into UDG from Aus Rap, so he's good one to see the style comparisons. Although he is a controversial figure (also allegedly retired).
Jords
Jords: In a super group with Cult Shotta and 4orrtune called Lonely Souljas; I think he's the best of them all.
The flavour of the week:Zaqquack, has been gaining traction for his aus UDG covers in the last month or two.
ARIA Recognised.
Every artist I've mentioned above has been acknowledged and posted by Take Flight AU. The founder of which (Haydn Wings), sits on the ARIA music advisory board for Hip-Hop and RNB.
Meaning these are real musicians, with genuine merit in the recognised industry of Australian rap.
This goes to show that they are not randoms that I've picked on my my accord to show you guys something that is only real to me. These people are at the top of the game right now in terms of relevance, music taste and preferences aside.
On top of that, a few of these artist (Zaqquack, Cult Shotta & Jonny Chopps) just performed at Parra Lanes last night. This event is said to have 400,000 victors of the the full course of its run time.
My Stance.
Now that the everyone's caught up, I'd like to state that I am a fan both traditional and emerging waves of Australia rap music.
I see the valid opinions of both the progressive and culturally protective fans.
I'm at Aus rap shows probably every other weekend, and within the local scenes you will see these terms (Aus rap or Aus UDG) used to separate the expectations for the audience when deciding what shows they wish to attend.
These shows feature completely different age groups, fashion & style, genres, drug/alcohol consumption rates and class demographics.
I simply wished to discuss what most of us on the frontlines are witnessing and working with every day in local scenes. For those of you who are from a different era.
Time changes us all, including the cultures we grew up in and help to develop. To see such a strong wave of young musicians gaining access to the arts through recording songs on their phones and playing shows is the most positive outcome of all of this.
It's the 21st century for christ sake folks; times have changed, the music along with it.
You were them once, just remember that.
Hope this clears up what I was tryna discuss in the last post!
Note: I'm not going to doxx myself, much to the moderators' dismay. I will however attempt to make the most engaging posts this sub has ever seen, using my involvement in the Aus rap world as a source for great discussion, education and journalism.
I don't have intentions to reveal myself, I want to use anonymity to be super honest with my discussions. Plus, I want to engage in the theatre of forum posting, be a character and create legend...It's more fun this way.
