Welcome Fellow Travelers - This is what r/BudgetAudiophile is about

Every sub-reddit has a focus - it's raison d'etre (reason for existence). Because if you don't focus, people stop participating because it has just become one big mess of topics.

Ours focus is ... education, discussion, and sharing of entry and mid level separate & multi component audio systems. Generally speaking, that is 2 channel stereo systems assembled for music listening - things that are both "budget" and "audiophile". So being budget is not enough, nor is being "audiophile". Generally speaking, UNDER $1,000 spent per component is our threshold, although obviously that number will vary by the person. Budget for me was $50 (all in) at one time. Now I am fortunate that if I want to, I don't mind spending $500 a piece. Others can go more - good for them.
Try r/audiophile if your spending more than $1,000 per componant.

Of course, many of us use our music listening set ups for multiple purposes - so 2.1 (adding a subwoofer), 3.0 (L/R with a center channel), 5.1 (surround) and up are also fair game. But the fundamental goal of this reddit is better 2 channel and 2.1 systems to play music - as good as we can afford.

What we are not is soundbars, boomboxes, bluetooth speakers PC branded audio solutions. Those things have their place, but it's not our reason to exist. As for just the soundbar aspect that belongs at r/soundbars

In addition, we are not about IEM's or Headphones (try r/headphones or r/HeadphoneAdvice). That is their reason for existence. Yes, they can be budget audiophile, but again, it's not our focus.

While part of "budget audiophile", for more detail, try r/turntables, r/vinyl, and r/hometheater for questions specific to them. There will be a better chance of a more educated response there to those issues. Those questions are welcome here, but probably better there once you get past "budget". Questions on Vintage equipment? r/vintageaudio is the place for you to get better advice (likely)

DIY is also part of "budget audiophile", but r/diyaudio/ and r/diysound focuses a lot more heavily on that issue.

So to reiterate, we don't hate headphones, logitech, or soundbars, etc. But those questions don't belong here and your post may well be deleted or closed. Because those are not the issues we have chosen in BudgetAudiophile to make part of this sub-reddit. You may not agree, but that is what it is.

Who is this "we" I speak of? Creator u/averagejoeaudiophile and the rest of the mods.

Purchasing USA VERA-FI AUDIO -- Scam Update -- Denton, TX Police Department now involved.

• Upvotes

Good morning,

As many are aware, Mark Schifter has seemingly been executing on a fraud for most of 2026 -- here's an update on how the legal system is responding.

A number of people have independently reached out to the Longmont, CO Probation Department (LCPD) , this is the organization responsible for overseeing Mark Schifter's 20-year probation sentence from his 2010 fraud conviction (lived in Longmont when convicted). There is a specific officer of this department assigned to Schifter's case and if you want to speak with her feel free to call this number (720-664-1726), it is a direct line. (Longmont is about 10 miles from Boulder, north of Denver)

Through a variety of sources the LCPD accumulated a significant amount on information on Schifter, and the way Vera-Fi Audio LLC has been operating in 2026. After reviewing said information the LCPD made the decision to advance the issue to the Longmont, CO District Attorney (LCDA) for their review.

After a joint-review, the LCPD & LCDA made the decision to pursue a formal investigation through the Denton, TX Police Department (DTPD)...Case #: 261749322. DTPD phone # here: (940-349-8181). DTPD email contact here: [fermin.velasquez@cityofdenton.com](mailto:fermin.velasquez@cityofdenton.com) (this particular contact is likely to change, I will update the post if/when it does)

The reason Colorado based authorities (LCPD & LCDA) referred the situation to DTPD is Schifter operates Vera-Fi Audio (and now Ranger HiFi) out of a Denton, TX address (house on a golf course, don't buy all the "new warehouse" BS 😂) and the rules require that the investigation take place in that jurisdiction.

This is where things stand right now.

The next step is for the DTPD to assign the case to a Detective who will formally investigate the situation and determine what charges may be in order.

Will update further when new info is available.

Review/Discussion INFO NEEDED! A tale of three thrifted CD players

Post image
30 Upvotes

Top to bottom:

Mitsubishi DP-212R (1988) Paid $10, worth ???

Kenwood DP-57 (1988) Paid $20, going for $60-$100 on eBay

Sony CDP-302 (1985) Paid $30, going for up to $450 on eBay

I’ve been super interested in 80s CD players lately. I found these three by complete chance all within the same week. Paid $60 total for them all. Here’s my short review:

The Sony sounds the best by a long shot. It works perfectly other than having a bit of trouble closing on its own. It loads instantly; faster than any player I’ve ever owned. It’s also built like a tank, everything is metal and it weighs probably 20lbs. I’ve found a ton of stuff about this player online so I’m not too starved for info about it. This one is definitely a keeper.

The Kenwood is next sound wise, then the Mitsubishi, but neither of them sound noticeably bad. I was rather satisfied with both in that arena. I can’t find much on either of those ESPECIALLY the Mitsubishi. It literally doesn’t even exist on the internet except for a few manuals. Anyone know much about it? The Kenwood is a great player, and the digital display is quite pretty, but I haven’t been able to find much except a couple posts on it either. If anyone knows anything about these two or has ever owned them please share your knowledge!!

Show and Tell Yamaha R-S500 + Klipsch Quartets

Post image
20 Upvotes

Sold or donated most of my audio gear when the GF and I broke up. The only hold outs were my Klipsch Quartets and an Audio Technica LP-120.

I needed an amp and was about to pull the trigger on a Yamaha A-S301 but I found an R-S500 on Offerup. The gent took some terrible pictures and misspelled the model so it went under the radar for a few weeks. He just wanted it gone and ended up giving it to me for $60 in pristine condition. Its probably too much for my apartment but it pushes the Quartets so nicely.

Purchasing USA Help choosing used towers for a 15x13 room (Yamaha TSR-7810). Priority: Crystal-clear vocals & zero bass bloat!

Hey everyone! Setting up a 2.0 stereo / music-focused system in a 15' x 13' room powered by a Yamaha TSR-7810 receiver.

My #1 priority is crystal-clear vocal clarity, detailed mids/highs, and tight, punchy bass with zero boomy resonance (no sub initially).

I've narrowed down my local used market to these options. Which pair should I pick?

• Emotiva Airmotiv T1+ — $500 (3-way, AMT ribbon tweeter, dual 6" woofers)

• B&W 684 S1 — $500 (2.5-way, Nautilus aluminum dome, dual 6.5" Kevlar drivers)

• Monolith Encore T6 — $300 (3-way, silk dome in waveguide, dual 6.5" woofers)

• Monitor Audio Bronze 6 + Centre — $495 (Includes 3.0 setup, C-CAM gold dome tweeters)

• KEF Q900 — $600 (8" Uni-Q driver, but has a small dent on lower active woofer)

• JBL Studio 290 + Center + Surrounds (5.0 Set) — $650 (3-way, 1" horn tweeter, dual 8" woofers)

• Klipsch Synergy VF-35 (F-3) — $200 (2-way horn, triple 8" woofers)

Quick questions:

• Which pair gives the cleanest, most natural vocal separation and zero bass boom in an untreated 15x13 room?

• Is Emotiva T1+ or B&W 684 worth the extra $200 over the Monolith T6 ($300)?

• Is the dent on the KEF Q900 woofer a dealbreaker, or worth negotiating down?

Would love your recommendations. Thanks!

Purchasing EU/UK Dali Sonik 5 or Dali Oberon 5

• Upvotes

Hello,

I'm looking for floorstanding speakers. I focused on the Dali Sonik 5 or the Dali Oberon 5. My living room is about 16 square meters.

My max budget is 1000 Euro, witch is the recommended retail price of the Dali Sonik 5 here in Germany.

Is there mutch difference between the two loudspeaker series?

I have got an offer for the Sonik 5 of 400 Euro for one speaker, so 800 Euro for the stereo setup. The offer came from a shop in the Nederlands, witch ships to Germany.

Shall I do buy them now or shall I got the Oberon 5 for about 60 Euro less for one speaker?

Best regards

Purchasing EU/UK Desktop setup 300€: t5v, d3v, 305 mkii need advice

Hi everyone,

Looking for some advice on building my first proper nearfield setup at my desk. Up until now, I’ve only used decent 2.1 systems and compact units, but I want to step up to proper monitors.

Music taste:

- Classic rock, electronic (chill house, deep house), and jazz.

Sound signature I’m chasing:

- Bass: Solid, tight, and impactful, but never bloated, boomy, or muddy.

- Mids/Highs: Open, detailed, and airy highs without harsh sibilance, with a clean and present midrange.

Room & Desk Setup:

- Usage: 95% nearfield music listening while working at the PC.

Listening volume:

- Mostly low-to-moderate levels throughout the workday.

Room dimensions:

- Long and narrow — 6.0m x 2.0m x 2.7m (approx. 20ft x 6.5ft x 9ft). I am planning to build DIY broadband acoustic absorption panels (fiberglass/rockwool + fabric) to treat early reflections.

Budget:

- Around €300 (located in the EU).

The Benchmark:

- Yesterday I heard a friend’s Adam Audio F5s and was genuinely blown away. That sound signature was pretty much spot-on for what I’ve been looking for. The AMT tweeter was fantastic, and the low-end was decent enough for my taste (a slight EQ tweak would make it perfect).

The Dilemma:

- Adam T5V (New - ~€300-340/pair): Seems like the most direct successor to what I loved in the F5 (U-ART ribbon tweeter, solid 5" woofer). Downside is the physical footprint on the desk and rear porting in a narrow room, though manageable.

- Adam D3V (New - ~€300/pair): Very tempting because of the compact desk footprint, front-facing controls, and USB-C connectivity. Still has an AMT tweeter and dual passive radiators. But can a 3.5" driver actually deliver satisfying low-end for deep house and classic rock at low-to-medium volumes without sounding thin?

- JBL 305P MkII (Used - €200 locally): I found a pair in good shape nearby. I know they get universal praise for their waveguided soundstage and neutral response, but I wouldn't be able to demo them first. Coming from being impressed by the Adam AMT tweeter, would I regret not going with an Adam? Also, how bad is the class-D amp hiss at arm's-length distance and low listening volumes compared to the Adams?

Has anyone compared these directly or transitioned from the F5/T5V down to the D3V? Would love to hear your thoughts, especially regarding low-volume performance and desk placement.

Thanks in advance!

Review/Discussion First hi-fi setup on a very small budget

Hello everyone,

First of all, I apologize if my grammar seems strange; English isn't my first language, and I'm using a translator.

I'm posting here because I'd like to set up my first hi-fi system for listening to CDs.

I have a very tight budget, but I've managed to find some components that fit within it, and I'd like to get your opinions (are they good quality, are they compatible with each other, what kind of sound quality can I expect?).

For the amplifier: Pioneer A-119

For the CD player: Philips CD 730

For the speakers: Davis Romeo

Thank you very much for your help.

Edit: I actually have another question. For this price, is it better to buy an all-in-one micro system or continue my project of finding vintage equipment?

Tech Support Yamaha Receiver Button Issue

Post image
1 Upvotes

I have recently bought this used Yamaha RX-A730 and I was really happy with it until it started to rapidly cycle on its own though different program pre-sets (like "Spectacle", "Concert Hall", etc.) as if I was constantly pressing a button. Did any of you encounter a similar issue with this type of receiver?

Show and Tell My first System

Now I know these ain't cheap, but I found them parked on the curb so they we're practicaly free. A perfect pair of 1978 15 Ohm Chartwell Ls3/5as. Set 'um up on a pair of Norstone Stylum 2's and am powering them (here comes the low budget) with a Fosi P3 & V3 stack with an Argon BT3 as a DAC and Bluetooth reciever.

That Klipsch The Three Two was my Hifi setup until now. Might upgrade the Tubes on the P3 or switch out the Op-Amps on these at some point. But I couldn't think of a better small living room, neighbour friendly setup.

I'm tempted to get a CD Player or a turntable, just so the treasure hunt can continue.

Purchasing USA Free Sony DA5ES

I’ve got a Sony DA5ES receiver that has been on the shelf for a while.

Unfortunately the right channel is dead. The left channel is working regardless of the input source. Remote included.

Anyone in the Seattle area want to take this and try to get it working? Free if you come pick it up.

Review/Discussion Any Ideas for these Sharp stereo towers?

Post image
2 Upvotes

Good afternoon,

I have this set of 2 Sharp Stereo towers that we got from my father-in-law purely because it would make our living room set-up more "entertainment center"-y. But I'm curious if it would actually be worth it to try wiring them up and if the sound quality would be quite good or if it would be worth it at all (currently using the Marshall Acton II on the stop as a kinda sound bar).

If they are worth it to get working, what would be a good amp to get for them and what kind of connection cables would I need?

Review/Discussion Speaker suggestion

Post image
22 Upvotes

Hi everyone, pretty new to this subreddit and slightly uneducated. I have had this home audio Sony system from the 90s I got on Facebook for a little over a year. The SS-U641AV’s tower speakers that came with it get LOUD but sound okay. I’m looking for something with a little more depth. Any suggestions? Thanks!
(Yes I know it’s dirty)

Purchasing USA Did I mess up?

Hi yall, I currently have early series kef q5 towers. And was wanting a matching center in Apple. Did I mess up by choosing the iq6c over the q9c. Does anyone know if they are that different in tonality? I may have already bought it so on a whim due to an offer that seemed reasonable on ebay. But did I mess up ? Thanks in advance for any response or insight, thank you!

Purchasing USA Budget 2ch receiver

So I have a pair of bose 100W speakers I want to use in my garage, I'd like to find a budget friendly receiver if that's even possible. Most come with RCA inputs but the only thing I'll probably have connected to it is a phone via BT or my TV.

I also have a powered SW I'd like to use.

Any recommendations?

Also, I was looking for receivers that had both HDMI and SW coax out but is that really needed? I'm sure I can get by with an optical input and use a Y from a set of RCA outputs to my SW. Just not sure if that affects quality or anything.

Thank you

Yamaha NS-A98a. Hi everyone, I'm very new to all this and have been looking around for an affordable speaker set. I'm setting up a system to play CDs which includes an Onkyo DXC390 and Pioneer Elite VSX-80TXV, found both for ~$200 together. Let me know! These particular speakers look to be 120 Watt.

Purchasing USA Built myself a subwoofer

This is an old Victor movie projector speaker from the 1930s-1940s that has been modernized with the latest technology using a Up2Stream Subwoofer Amplifier Board.

it is currently wired to my amp’s subwoofer output (LFE) and paired with some bookshelf speakers.

I could also use it wirelessly using the app when pairing with other speakers powered by Up2stream / Arylic amps or DIY boards.

Excited to bring new life to this beautiful speaker!

Purchasing USA Best smaller, starter bookshelf speakers?

I’m trying to setup my turntable area, and don’t have a ton of space on my table. Any suggestions for good smaller speakers? My range is flexible but I’m hoping for a $300-600 range. Any suggestions with a receiver would be welcome too.
