Abridged Notes:
Good hustle and rebounding.
Miller is our star.
Great Kalk game as a defender.
Naz is a mismatch hunter and much better than Miles.
Grayson and Schroder are amazing depth pieces.
We have a much better offensive scheme than Miami who will have to drastically change their mid range focused offense.
Full Notes
Great first three quarters from Charlotte. The offensive rebounding battle doesn't look that bad but I thought Charlotte was just first to the ball for those first three quarters. They battled for extra possessions and did the little stuff. Well-earned win.
Miller was great. Wasn't wildly efficient but they ran a ton through him and he was great at consistently hitting big shots. He made a few shots aroudn the rim and consistently drew fouls with his aggression. He was a +20 tonight and you could feel like he was the fulcrum. Without Miller on the court it felt way too hard for the Hornets to initiate anything.
Good Ryan Kalkbrenner game. Did his job as a garbage man finisher with the couple of chances he had, and was really good on the interior as a rim protector. Well-earned that he closed the game.
Reid has been terrific so far as a mismatch scorer. Just really hard to switch against him. Had 23 points and his ability to dribble, pass and shoot at this size is a serious weapon within this offense. Just a much better dynamic for this offense than Bridges was giving them.
Grayson Allen and Dennis Schroder were such great depth pickups for this team and tonight was the prime example of how getting those two allow Charlotte to survive nights where two of their three best perimeter players, Coby White and Kon Knueppel, are out. Allen drilled four 3s and was great attacking closeouts to pass to his teammates. Schroder was just cooking guys in space, particularly Wiggins.
Look, again, the Charlotte scheme under Charles Lee will get you. They operate in oceans of space and actually run organized offense where the goal is to find shots at the rim and catch-and-shoot 3s. Miami right now feels way too random on offense. They're way too willing to settle in the midrange, and it feels in part to me like it's because they don't have enough structure with secondary actions where guys like Giannis and Bam feel like they'll have another good option come up. In the fourth, it felt like they went to more empty stuff and more organized offensive actions, which in part led to their success. I think they need to probably move away from the LaRoche stuff and move more toward that, but honestly that could just be my own biases and preferences for more structured, organized offense talking.

Looking back at last year, we couldn’t beat them. Their physicality was kryptonite for the Lamelo-Kon-Miller Hornets. In-fact, we were capable of dismantling any team during the height of that regular season and yet we were unable to prove it VS Detroit.
Despite the losses, vitriol developed between both teams. Shoves, brawls leading to suspension, refusal to shake hands after regulation. A lot of these were initiated by Jalen Duren, who Charlotte picked in the draft then traded.
They definitely became a hate-watchable team for our fanbase
Then comes the post-season, where if we make the playoffs, we have another chance to prove ourselves vs the one seed. I know a lot of fans were fantasizing this matchup and the possibility of an upset, no matter how unrealistic it was. We missed the playoffs, barely.
Do you guys still hate the Pistons or
did that loss in the play-in end the rivalry?

I've been a long time hornets fan. Been watching Salaun every year since he was drafted. And every year he's felt like a total bust. Look slow, unathletic, every year. Till now. He looks like a totally different player this year, I've been wondering why we keep him around, but it finally seems like he's made the jump this year. He looks aggressive, confident, has way more hustle and is looking great so far this season.
Salaun lm sorry I doubted you. Good luck this year! Go Bugs!!!

Props to Charles for not sugar coating it. I hope this team really has a fire lit under them today. Otherwise I'll pray Charles starts rotating pieces and making guys earn their minutes with effort if they don't.

I may get some hate for this but I feel like it needs to be said after the game last night. I was there and, yes, the performance was unacceptable. But I think it's important for us as fans to hold the team accountable, not tear them down.
Now I'm not talking about the boos last night, because it seems they have worked and the team got the message. I think that is a form of accountability. But it's very tiring seeing the same kind of posts highlighting others success while using it to insult and hate on Hornets players. There's ways to discuss our team without blindly hating and it feels like a lot of fans want the team to fail just to prove themselves right. And this leads back to my main point: to me there is a big difference between holding the team accountable and tearing them down. I think discourse between us fans would benefit a lot from moving away from reactionary hatred and instead trying to discuss what the team does wrong and what they need to be better at. Analysing what the team does right and wrong and how to fix it leads to much more engaging conversation, but this is the Internet so that is asking a lot.
At the end of the day I get it. People want the team to be good and after last season they are upset that we took a step back, I even share some of that sentiment. But there's no need to look back at what we had anymore. Whether we like it or not, we just need to focus on what we have now.

It was honestly kind of surreal being there. Been a fan for a decade and I can’t remember the last time the fans booed the team as relentlessly as today. It was well deserved, but man. The pent up frustration of the LaMelo trade came out

I keep seeing people on this subreddit and Hornets Twitter claim that the Hornets are paying Brandon Miller like a top-10 player, a superstar, or the best player on a championship team.
That’s just not the case, and I think a lot of people making these arguments are out of touch with what NBA contracts look like today.
There are already close to 15 players making around $60 million a year, and guys like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Devin Booker are set to make $70 million annually. NBA salaries have gotten absolutely massive.
Under his contract, Brandon Miller would rank around 30th in the league in annual salary. If we saw salaries as player rankings (they definitely aren’t) would anyone seriously consider the 30th ranked player in the NBA a superstar or the unquestioned No. 1 option on a championship team?
Miller is making roughly the same amount as Domantas Sabonis, OG Anunoby, Franz Wagner, Desmond Bane, and Brandon Ingram. I doubt many people would consider those guys superstars, either. And that's not even mentioning Amen Thompson, who is in the same general contract range as Miller. I think most of us would agree that Miller is either the better player right now or at least in a similar tier.
The point is that Brandon Miller isn't being paid like a superstar. He's being paid like a young player with significant upside in an NBA where contracts have gotten ridiculously massive.

I live out of state. Previous seasons I used Directv League Pass and I always got the Hornets home broadcast. So far this season I only get the opposing team broadcast. Does anyone know why?

Rick Schnall: "Jeff (Peterson) has a long-term vision here, and he is motivated and incentivized to make the best long-term decisions for the franchise. That was important to us, to hire someone we knew would be here for a really long time."
"Obviously, the trades we made this year at the draft were tough decisions for our organization, but we're making them with the long-term goal in mind, which is to be a team that can win year in, year out."
