1-2 years ago, I had a bunch of my stuff contaminated with mouse urine and poop, some of this stuff is very difficult to disinfect, and I'm really struggling to get it done. Poop is easy to see, but the urine blends in often, so it's not always easy to see what's actually contaminated, so I just assume it's all contaminated. Before you comment it, no I'm not just gonna throw it all out, throwing stuff out is easy, but things cost effort to regain, some of these items are very hard to part with for various reasons.
My goto disinfector is bleach, but that's too aggressive for certain things (such as electronics, anything on paper, dvds, books, etc), and leaves behind residue that I may not be able to easily remove. On items that bleach is a bad idea for, I thought about using isopropyl alcohol sometimes (on electronics for example), but I don't think that's able to kill all the pathogens that mice carry.
On a side-note, is it possible that it's been long enough that most pathogens are dead by natural causes?
Also I'm concerned about unwanted chemical reactions between the disinfectors and the items, which could leave behind toxins. I'm also concerned about remaining residues from the disinfectors and how toxic those might be.
So the next best thing I can think of, is to throw all the stuff in a gas chamber and hit it with ozone gas for a bit. That's alot easier and simpler, but I don't know the pros and cons of that, or how destructive it might be to some items. AFAIK ozone won't leave residue, but I assume it still has the risk of creating unwanted chemical reactions.
TBH I just want to find a place I can take all this stuff to hit it with high energy radiation. Some kind of gamma irradiator, or electron beam sterilizer, something like that. If such a solution was available, it could resolve this crisis in no time at all, with minimal side effects. This is the silver-bullet solution, no toxic residues, no time-consuming disinfection processes that may or may not damage items. But that's probably an out-of-reach solution... is it?
In-case it's relevant, I live in the US.
