OFFICIAL Sub Discussion New Rules

Subject to discussion before implementation

1) First and foremost, ban all of the repetitive victim posting

"Why is Dark Souls 2 so hated?" just devolves into the same thing - everyone commenting in agreement and performative victimizing. It's a video game, not everyone is going to like exactly what you like. There's no real discussion to be had there, and we seemingly have them here more than the other main subreddits. It's just becoming tiring.

2) Ban engagement-bait posts

The best example of this is someone posting a random, unrelated screenshot or artwork of Dark Souls 2 with the title of "What's your favorite sword in the game?" - then proceeding to not at all join in the discussion. It just serves to farm karma while putting in zero effort, not crediting the artist they took the art from, and not participating in their own thread. If you want to discuss something, make a text post and actually discuss.

3) Ban trouble makers at the mods' discretion

This is a spicy one because it can easily be mishandled by the wrong mod team. We all know Reddit mods are pretty garbage overall, but I'd like to think I'm a bit different since I'm here for Souls and couldn't give a shit less about seeming professional or having any semblance of "power" (it's Reddit, lmao).

This essentially means if you're posting within the guidelines (i.e - posting about Dark Souls 2) but you're making your post to simply stir shit, rile people up constantly, and put down others... then you should expect a ban.

I'm obviously not going to name names, but we all know a couple of usernames who, whenever there's random drama, we know they're going to be involved. These are the users I'm talking about

EDIT (this includes the "Slander posts" that you guys keep commenting about, but I will also explicitly say that yes, this does include the lame "Ds3 is grayslop hurr hurr" posts that just seek to rile people up for no reason)

Finally, a question to you all: How do we make this subreddit better?

That's it, that's the most important thing in this entire post. The game has been released for 12 years and the subreddit has kind of devolved into the same thing for the last decade at this point. Are there any ideas you all have, rules I should change, things I can do differently to make this place more enjoyable and less of the same, repetitive drivel?

Faraam Knight, "Long ago, in a walled off land far to the North, a great king built a great kingdom. I believe they called it Drangleic. Perhaps you are familiar?...No you can't be but one day you will stand upon it's decrepit gate, without really knowing why...."

Love the series and always wanted figures in the series in a smaller scale! Hope you enjoy!

Finished DS2 today! Wasn't as nearly as bad as I thought it would be. The stuff with Vendrick and Nashandra is also pretty interesting, ahaha. Good plot. Dlcs were alright. I feel that the game has a lot of hallways in comparison to the first game. I got lost a lot.

Anyway, for the end of the game, I used chicken leg and onion as my gear. So goofy looking. I miss you, Siegmeyer of Catarina... For a majority, I swapped between Zwei and Dragon tooth!

Blurred out the name so no hate gets this guys way.
I was just going through the game grinding for the plat and this guy invades me 3 times, we had some decent fights he was using mostly hexes and poison, and he had the left hand invisible ring which this was my first time seeing in game; when he did use a melee I managed to get some parries.
I tried to say ggs after I won the 3rd time but he had messages off, then a few minutes later he accuses me of lag switching… which is crazy because as you can see he only had 8 adp.

Like how you gonna beat the game deathless then not know what adp does? I mean maybe he just got someone to drop the ring for him? But why not go all out and use both invisible rings.

I see why ds2 pvp is glazed so much though it’s really fun; must’ve been so peak when the game was populated.

Guide The ultimate compilation of important mechanics including counter damage modifications, enemy defense, enemy elemental resistance, motion values, and spell buff formulas.

So I spent months tailoring google searches to find this information, and I want to share it all with you, good players of DS2.

I noticed nobody made a thread compiling all of the relevant charts, so here it is my friends.

True counter damage modifiers:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1k8HHdcma-g3k2kXvBjQN4jcZJt2AGby1cD7YbII4s9o/edit?usp=drive_link

Weapon motion values, spell buff formulas, spell motion values, power stance, backstab and riposte values:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1-eUYlB9C_jrSAr2eQA8eoRJdaO7zahTghs57Kl6_nio/htmlview#gid=1544718385

Enemy physical resistance:

Enemy elemental resistance:

https://www.reddit.com/r/DarkSouls2/s/PTd0p5bwXa

Credit to everyone who made these, I am very unaware of the history behind these, I know The Hittite is someone important, but if there are other people that should be credited, please post them in the comments and I’ll try to add them as an edit.

I just wanted to put all this in one place so that others could find this information, as there is a lot of misinformation out there about the mechanics, or threads from so long ago that patches changes were made to the game since then.

Discussion After playing through most of Fromsoft’s ‘souls’ catalogue, Dark Soul 2 stands strong as my personal favorite.

I picked up my first fromsoft game for the first time this year, that being Dark Souls 1, with the intention of completing all of the Fromsoft souls games. So far I’ve completed DS1, DS2, Sekiro, Demon’s Souls, and BloodBorne.

After being completely entranced by DS1 and doing several NG+ runs and various new builds, I was eager to jump into DS2 to see what it had to offer, but I was largely dissuaded by friends and the community at large to skip DS2 entirely in favor of DS3 and other Fromsoft games.

So, I did; I went on to play Demons souls, Bloodborne, and finally Sekiro, before I even finished Dark souls 2. And while all of those games are still phenomenal in their own right, I had the best time with DS2 by a long shot. I’ve replayed it countless times at this point, without any regrets that I wasn’t playing DS3 or Elden Ring instead, and when I feel like playing a souls game or just a game to play in my spare time, I hop right into DS2.

It is by far the most replayable, being significantly larger than DS1, and the build variety + added combat mechanics make every playthrough unique and fun. While I’m aware of its problems compared to the rest of the series, I find its sore spots way less severe than most, and I often find mechanics like the agility stat interesting/challenging more than I do frustrating.

I even went back to play vanilla DS2 after completing sotfs several times, and that was somehow more fun than scholar was. If you’re a Souls fan on the fence about playing Dark Souls 2, then run and don’t walk. Play vanilla DS2 for a first time experience (the base game still comes with all the DLC) and keep an open mind. I absolutely love this game and I’m glad I tried it in the face of so much contention. I’m happy others feel the same.

Discussion Random Hot Take: I think the Gank Squad is actually a fun fight and look forward to taking them on when I play Dark Souls 2.

I know that the Gank Squad are one of the most disliked boss fights in the game, and I am not going to argue that there is any type of incredible design or thought put into them or anything, since its just three random NPCs thrown into a room and given boss health bars, but after finishing another playthrough of the game yesterday, I just was thinking about my feelings towards every boss in the game and I just think they are a fun fight.

I don't think the run up to them is very hard, even for a solo player, at least in comparison to Blue Smelter or the cats, as I easily run through it with little issue, at least in my experience, and then I just find running around and trying to separate them so you can take them out slowly pretty satisfying. I usually don't like NPC boss fights (Champions Gravetender and Halflight are not very fun in my opinion, for example), but this one and the Leda fight in SotE are examples I find fun (the Leda one has significantly better story and build up in comparison though, of course).

Again, they aren't the best fight out there, but I was surprised to find them in my top 20 for Dark Souls 2 specifically when I was ranking them for myself. I don't know, I could very well be insane though. Anyone else actually kind of like this fight?

Discussion Do you remember your first death?

I got this game on launch day years ago. I still remember my first death because it was so embarrassing.

I died in Things Betwixt. I did not die from a monster, I died because spooky frog burped and I rolled off a log into a hole.

I retained that same skill set all the way to current day.

Discussion Stuck at poison boss lady

Hi,

I am stuck at the poison boss lady with her head in her hands.

She even heals from the poison, this is unfair.

I am 99% sure that there is either a ring for poison resistance, or I can drain her area somehow.

I won't read the comments until I beat her ass, just wanted to share this bullshit issue.

Yes, I found the really nearby bonefire.

Edit: after wasting many hours in exploring every other area I could think of, I gave up and looked at the comments for help. I actually tried to burn the windmill but I used a fire arrow at one of its spining hands, but it did nothing. Why would I be able to set it on fire by putting flame in the metal parts?

Help Recommendation for Dex build?

Hello everyone! I finally got to play DS2 and I am amazed how much I am enjoying it (I thought it was going to be a terrible game, don't get the hate).

I decided to play a dex build (as always) and currently using the falchion Two handed and I'm not sure if I should use rapier as a second weapon or if I should infuse my weapons.

Could you share any tips? I am just a couple hours in level 40.

Thank you!

Help Soul farming amount for SOT

So my goal with this post is to help others with soul farming. I have been playing since day 1 on the original on Xbox and now at 28 i'm trying to get all the achievements on Xbox series X. This guide and it's numbers are going to be based around the memory of Jeigh Boss and hopefully someone smarter than me can calculate actual percentages. But having searched and searched 25 different sources and sometimes like with fextra just being straight up wrong info I can shed some extra light. Especially since i still see so many phantoms here and some of these peices of gear aren't the easiest or desired to get. The other reason is not ever peice of gear that does something extra says

"Effect:" for example the charred Loyce shield gradually restores HP, the sanctum mace poisons you with ever swing, and the old bell helm I think nulifies headshot damage but even if it doesn't I'm pretty sure it goes dong when it's hit.

At bonfire intensity 99+ and zero extra gear the boss is giving me 300,000 per kill

With the covetous silver serpant ring+2 (cssr for short) I'm getting 390,000

With the tseldora set

372,920

Tseldora with cssr

484,796

Individual peices

Hat

307,500

Hat + cssr

399,749

Shirt

315,000

Shirt + cssr

409,499

Gloves

330,000

Gloves + cssr

428,999

Pants

315,000

Pants + cssr

409,499

Now out of all the other items I know of

The warlock mask

Symbol of avarice

And

Jester gloves

There is only one piece of equipment that runs different numbers both with and without the cssr

And that is the Nahr Alma robes.

They give

330,000

And with cssr

428,999

So with the highest gear I know of you will get a grand total of

507,882 per kill using

Symbol/warlock/tseldora

Nahr Alma robes

Tsledora manchettes/Jester gloves

Tseldora trousers

and cssr+2

BUT WAIT THERES MORE!

You don't want to use a whole set and sub 1 peice of gear? For example the gloves that give a 5% chance critical hit or the gear that gives extra casts or cast speed (While keeping cssr+2 on and using Nahr Alma robe)

Not using Hat nets you

495,494

Not using Shirt nets you

461,711

Not using gloves nets you

461,711

And not using Pants nets you

483,697

Now some other notes I have because Ik this isn't perfect.

This is all on my 1st playthrough on this character so I don't think subsequent playthrough affects soul gain because the bonfire ascetics do that.

What I mean is the ascetic NG's the area so level 99 on my first playthrough would net me equal souls fighting it at playthrough 99 NOT ascetic 99 plus whatever playthrough i'm on.

Hollow level affects nothing. As in after a effigy is popped or as low as the health bar goes after death.

The shield of want does not gain extra souls. I would test the individual peice, the individual peice with the ring, then the shield with and without the ring on several peices and the entire tseldora set, I even tested it on both max & min Hollow levels and zero extra souls with the shield.

I do not think gender matters either it's just an animation thing.

I also don't know if any covenant or covenant devotion levels matter.

And I don't know if ds2 has an overkill mechanic let alone on this boss. So I can't give you those numbers. I would have to start a new character, pick a weak enemy to kill, then go back on this one and kill the same enemy and if i do this I will update this post because it will also answer of my level affects the soul gain number aswell so I might.

Discussion Question about when and how the credits music play.

When the game originally came out the credit music was " Longing". After a patch the game got its second ending and new credit music, "Remains".

I am a bit confused about what triggers each credit song. I am finding conflicting information online about both songs playing, or only 1 of them per ending.
I played the game on ps3 first and thought I got both songs but I am not sure anymore.

Does anyone know what's up with these two credit songs?

Question Staff Durability

So I'm playing the SOTFS version of DS2 and was wondering do sorceries drain staff durability? Currently going through No Man's Wharf and got a warning that my staff is about to break while using Great Soul Arrow on those man spider things.

I'm new to this game and only played through DS1 and Elden Ring
