What hobby looked relaxing until you actually tried it?

For me, it's sourdough.

I kept seeing videos of people casually folding dough and pulling perfect loaves out of the oven. Looked like such a relaxing weekend hobby, so I figured I'd give it a shot.

Two months later, I've got a starter on my counter that needs more attention than a pet, and I know way too much about my kitchen temperature lol.

Feed it at the wrong time and nothing happens. Add too much water and I'm basically dealing with soup. My last loaf came out so flat my roommate asked if I was trying to make focaccia.

I've even started leaving little voice notes on my plaud about what I changed each time, like how much water I used or how long I let it rise. Apparently my relaxing hobby now requires lab notes.

And the worst part? I'm already planning to try again this weekend.

Anyone else pick up a hobby thinking it'd be relaxing, only to find out it's way more work than expected? What's yours?

what's a hobby you absolutely love but would NEVER recommend to anyone?

for me it's baking

i started because i wanted to make some cookies at home and thought it'd be a cheap, relaxing hobby. fast forward and somehow i own a stand mixer, 20 different baking pans and ingredients i can't even pronounce

the worst part? you spend 3 hours baking something that everyone finishes eating in 10 mins and then you're left with a mountain of dishes but somehow the next day i'm already looking up another recipe

10/10 hobby, terrible financial decision tho

Mine is Rc crawling. It starts with a 100-500 dollar crawler then it easily escalates from there. With parts and accessories

RC collecting: a little red pickup with silver flames, shown from every angle

A short photo slideshow of a Venom T10 pickup body on an HPI RS4 3 chassis from the RC collection. Red paint, silver flame graphics and chrome-finish wheels give it a miniature street-truck look.

This one is a roller with no engine installed. Collecting RC models can be as much about body styles, small details and mechanical layouts as driving them.

What part of the RC hobby interests you most: building, painting, collecting or driving?

Finally finished this tiny snowflake piece! Hung it by the window and loved the way the sunlight cast these delicate shadows on the wall.

Crocheting has honestly been my favorite way to unwind after a long day.

Hope everyone is having a peaceful week! Drop your current WIPs (works in progress) below, I need some new inspiration 👇🧵

Recently picked up writing as a hobby, any where from books to song to poems, to just venting and throwing away. Currently working on a book, is there anyone i could send the picture of my first 2.5 chapters so I could get for advice opinions or ideas? I'm its hand written so its some rough pictures and very ungrammatical first drafts.

Hobbies to socialize?

Most hobbies I have, I end up doing by myself (working out + drawing). I tend to not go out of my way to meet new people but would like to. What are some good thing to get into to meet more people?

Unrealistic expectations

Hi everyone! Hope you're having a wonderful day so far. I'm writing here as I didn't know where else. I'm 41 and I have bee creatively inclined my entire life. I have made a career out of graphic design and illustration but as a hobby I have also tried my hand at photography, writing, and other creative things.
My issue I have noticed is that in the last few days, I've taken an interest in learning how to write screenplays. I bought a book on it and found scripts to some movies I like. The while thing got me thinking how I unconsciously place unrealistic expectations on things that are supposed to be hobbies. For fun. I have this fantasy where I try something new and it turns out I have a natural talent for it and it changes my life.
In the case of screenwriting, or even my ideas for short stories or novellas, what's the point of writing them to not do anything with them? They arent gonna be published or turned into a film.
Help me enjoy my hobbies again.
