I recently watched Pulse and got hooked almost immediately by its style of horror. I absolutely adore how slow it is, how drawn out the shots are, all the devious 180s that never fail to trick you into thinking a jumpscare is waiting no matter how many times it restrains itself. Honestly, the only thing I didn't really like was the ending.
After seeing a movie seemingly master the slow style of creeping horror it had, the whole "ghosts take over and the apocalypse happens" thing felt like whiplash and like all the tension was just instantly gone. I was disappointed, but then I started thinking about why they might have chosen that ending.
A while back, I learned about how the "have you ever dreamt this man?" meme is apparently super popular in Japan, and how several stories about him ended with the world ending. That's the only other time I've heard of this, so I don't really know if it's an established trope in Japanese culture. Is this just a difference in culture that I wasn't aware of since I'm still pretty new to J-horror (but excited to immerse myself in)?
