The excitement has worn off

When I first started school, I was so excited to read the cases! They were so compelling and interesting! Now, I can hardly stay focused on the text! It is sooooo painstaking to get through these reading assignments.

My Constitutional Law prof likes misogynistic comments on his own Substack

He is tenured, writes a truly insufferable [blog](https://substack.com/@ecantu), and then lectures his class about free speech when people complained.

Just venting. Sorry if this isn't the appropriate place, I just hate being even tangentially associated with this person.

missing life before law school

Is anyone else just over this? i'm a 2L and 1L was ok, I moved to a new city, made some friends, and got through it. I guess I just hoped 2L might shake things up with classes/people and be better, but i still just feel isolated and lonely. I'm in a ton of credits and am busy/doing fine academically but I just feel bored and at this point want to skip to the end of the school year. idk i don't want to just wish these years away but im missing my old life of just being with good friends and being fun. if anyone's got any advice id appreciate it

need motivation

I need some words to prevent me from spiraling & crying uncontrollably after being incredibly humbled by my first legal memo. I scored below the median & while I’m not sure whether I had the lowest grade in the class, I’m struggling to see whether it’ll get better from here. Our final memo is the biggest chunk of our grade (worth substantially more than this first one) and I don’t know if it’s even possible to make a comeback. Am I really that cooked?

If I ask for an extension / go to student services will they hold it against me?

Hello, I am a 1L. I have had a rough go so far. I was off to a bad start to begin with - I found out I was pregnant the first week of school and decided to end the pregnancy and have not recovered emotionally. Now, my brothers addiction and mental health is getting worse. It is impacting my work because my home is violent and I have to live here because I can’t afford to live anywhere else. I managed to scrape by and make it though midterms, but I have a legal writing assignment due thurs that was already extended by the prof by two days. I am trying to right but all I hear is my brother wailing and making noises in the background, and fist fighting and screaming between him my mom and my dad. I go to the library but I don’t like to stay too late because I am a woman and my campus isn’t in the safest are. I also can’t sleep sometimes because of the noise. I live in fear of him dying every day. On top of that I am grieving. Is it ok to ask for an extension?

Passed the NY Bar as a foreign-trained lawyer, but my career plan just hit a wall. Need honest advice.

Hi everyone! I passed the July 2026 NY Bar Exam on my first attempt with a UBE score of 267. While I’m happy to have passed, I’m now trying to figure out my next step.

I live in Pennsylvania with my husband and toddler. My original plan was to transfer my score to PA, but unfortunately, I’m short of the required 270.

A little about me:
6+ years of corporate legal and compliance experience in my home country (a common-law jurisdiction).
Background in law, finance, and business.
Recently completed my US LL.M.
Interested in corporate law, in-house legal roles, and compliance, but also open to immigration law and other practice areas to get started.
I’m willing to relocate with my family if necessary, but I’d like to explore my options before making that decision.

I’d really appreciate your advice on three things:
Which states should I consider with a 267 UBE score?
What jobs should I target right now? Are corporate compliance, contracts, or legal assistant roles realistic options given my experience?
Should I focus on finding a job first or retake the bar to improve my score?

I’d especially love to hear from international lawyers who have been in a similar situation or employers who hire foreign-trained lawyers.

Thank you! Any advice or personal experiences would mean a lot. ❤️

So does being vocal in class = A?

I’m curious about the “gunners” in class who always seem to speak just for the sake of saying something. Does that actually translate into an A? Or does participation only make a difference when you’re in B+ territory, competing with three or four other students for the one A- the professor can give?

To those who do well in these interviews, please drop your tips!

I have been interviewing for post-grad positions. However, I am not a good interviewer no matter how much I prepare. I recently had an interview for MY DREAM JOB, and I couldn't answer the most simple question of them all. Literally a softball for me! So I totally bombed it! I will forever be mad at myself for this.

So, do you all have any interview tips?

bragging friends

I want to be happy for my friends when they make good grades. But sometimes the way they say it comes across as bragging. I can’t tell if I’m upset because it’s so competitive or if I’m jealous or what. It’s very difficult to navigate.

Why is there no consideration in Alaska Packers Ass’n v. Domenico?

In my contracts class we just went through Alaska Packers Ass’n v. Domenico and it seems to be that the main takeaway is that the contract alteration lacked consideration. I don’t see how that’s the case though, it feels like what’s really at issue is that the defendants were under duress.

Under the bargain theory of consideration, it was to my understanding, that we need reciprocal conventional inducement for there to be consideration. Under the bargain theory then, there should be consideration. There was an agreement, where there was reciprocal inducement. It’s just the case that the defendants REALLY needed the plaintiffs to perform, and that played a part in their inducement.

SO, am I missing something? Or is it the case that there was consideration, but the court just had an issue with the contract alteration being made semi “under duress?”

Disappointed in midterms

For all upperclassmen who didn’t do well on the midterm but turned it around for the final, what helped you turn things around?

Context: I’m a 1L who felt confident for the midterm but my score was a tad below median.

LL.M. at Lincoln as a stepping stone vs. jumping straight into a top-tier UK university: Is mid-tier a waste of time?

I’m currently facing a bit of a dilemma regarding my LL.M. plans in the UK and would love to get your honest perspective.

For context, I’ve already been accepted into an LL.M. program at the University of Lincoln. My long-term career goals are:

Working in International Organizations (like the UN).

Working in international legal practice/law firms abroad.

My original thought was to use Lincoln as a "first stepping stone"—a manageable environment to get used to the system and build my research skills before aiming higher later. However, after reading some harsh comments on Reddit calling mid-tier schools a "waste of time and money," I started second-guessing myself.

The counter-argument in my head is: If I'm going to put in the hard work anyway, shouldn't I just put that exact same effort into a higher-ranked university right now to avoid regrets and get better brand recognition? (Assuming English or adjustment isn't the primary barrier here).

Also, on a practical note: Are there still UK universities accepting applications/open for rolling admissions for upcoming intakes right now?

I want to avoid wasting time or money if a mid-tier degree won't realistically help me break into international practice or global organizations compared to a stronger university brand.

I’d really appreciate your raw, unfiltered thoughts on this. Thanks!
