U.S. Politics megathread

American politics has always grabbed our attention - and the current president more than ever. We get tons of questions about the president, the supreme court, and other topics related to American politics - but often the same ones over and over again. Our users often get tired of seeing them, so we've created a megathread for questions! Here, users interested in politics can post questions and read answers, while people who want a respite from politics can browse the rest of the sub. Feel free to post your questions about politics in this thread!

All top-level comments should be questions asked in good faith - other comments and loaded questions will get removed. All the usual rules of the sub remain in force here, so be nice to each other - you can disagree with someone's opinion, but don't make it personal.

Pentagon requires all major U.S. Military bases to be self sufficient for the next 90 days. No outside fuel, electricity, food, water or supplies. Manufactured chaos or is something else happening?

How do you encourage someone to accept their loss of status without devastating them?

My half brother took the ultimate L in an irrevocable fashion, a second conviction for CSAM possession. He had been a fairly successful professional but now can't get a job and lives with my parents. He's been trying to date women and I'm want to tell him that's just not going to happen. (For one thing, he isn't attracted to them, he just wants companionship, but companionship requires honesty and he's in at least partial denial about what/who he is.)

His personality has not changed AT ALL after prison, which is challenging for me. Like how do you politely remind somebody that they are disgraced?

I heard there is therapy specifically for loss of status; does anyone know anything about this? It might just come to me cutting ties with him. This is sortof a last resort after several years tolerating him and being condescended to.

Why do call centers have an AI answering service, take all the information to transfer you to a live person, just for the person to ask you the same questions?

I often have to call the local Social Security office for clients and after i get through the stupid prompts, they ask for the clients’ SSN. Then, when i get to the person, they ask for the client’s info again. Wouldn’t it make more sense if you just skipped straight to the live person??

And also, Not to sound like a boomer but the worst advancement in technology was the addition of AI answering services. I don’t want to speak to an AI voice, i want to get straight to speaking to a live person. And you never can just skip right to speak to a person, you have to go through the scripts AND THEN wait for someone to pick up.

Why did society stop building "third places" where adults can hang out without spending money, and why is lingering in public now treated with suspicion?

• Upvotes

Historically, communities had numerous free or low-cost physical spaces where people could naturally gather, socialize, or simply spend time outside of work and home — like community recreation halls, town squares, bowling leagues, and public gathering pavilions.

Today, almost every space meant for adults requires continuous purchasing (cafés, bars, entertainment venues), and simply sitting or spending an afternoon in a commercial area without actively consuming leads to being asked to leave or viewed as loitering.

From an urban planning and sociological perspective, did this shift happen purely because commercial real estate prioritized monetization, or did our collective tolerance for unstructured public interaction fundamentally decline?

Is software engineering still a viable career path despite AI?

I've been thinking of trying to learn software engineering from scratch. I heard like maybe 10 years ago this was arguably among the safest and best career choices because of high demand and decent salary. But with the advent of AI and hearing many stories about how those jobs get over thousands of applicants, is this still a good career choice?

I know some people say passion first but still. It would honestly suck if you love doing this yet can't find a job. Is the future of software engineering (and fields related to it) still good, despite AI getting smarter and smarter every year?

Driver refused to give other driver their name and insurance info after a fender bender in a parking lot.

Location: California

I witnessed a car hit another car as they were both trying to exit a parking lot. It wasn't a hard hit by any means, just your typical fender-bender and I didn't notice any damage on either car.

Both drivers got out their cars to check out the damage. The driver who hit the other car refused to give the other driver their name or insurance information. They stood there arguing for a while but the guy who hit the car refused to give up their info. The driver of the car that was hit eventually left out of frustration, and the other driver drove away after that.

That incident got me thinking about how to handle that should I ever find myself in a similar situation.

So my question is this, if you're in an accident and the other driver refuses to give you any info regarding insurance and whatnot, what are the legal ramifications for someone that does that? Normally you don't call the police for a fender bender but would that be the next step?

Why do most people not consider chronic pain to be one of the worst things that can happen to you?

• Upvotes

When people mention their greatest fears or worst-case scenarios I’m surprised that endless agony rarely comes up. And in fact many of these same people dismiss chronic pain sufferers.

How do you comfort someone who just lost a child to cancer?

A friend of my family just lost their 6 year old to cancer. I have known the child’s father for as long as I can remember. I am not able to get the time off work to go to the funeral, how do I best support them right now? They have 3 other children including the twin of the child that passed.

I know what it is like to be someone who loves someone with cancer, my husband had cancer for 6 years. We were very fortunate, he is now in remission.

I know I can’t fully understand their loss because it has never happened to me. I am completely at a loss right now and I feel so terrible for them because their reality was my worst nightmare for a long time and they will never get to feel the relief that I did when we found out that my husband was in remission.

Why is it still taboo to talk about Mao Ze Dong in a factual manner even though he died over 50 years ago and killed millions of people?

I mean all these are facts which cannot be disputed but yet it is still taboo to talk about him in a bad light?

Why is it society seems to expect everyone to have a dream job or big career goals?

Ive never had any dream job or career goals, even as a kid I just lied and said I wanted to be a doctor because when I said I didn't want to be anything in particular everyone was like "oh, you must want to be something when you grow up" and pressured me into saying something and a doctor was the first thing that popped into my mind and I just went with it until I was a teen. Ive always just wanted to have my hobbies and do my own thing, im perfectly find just working in retail and going home to the things that actually make me happy. Im 22 now and people always ask if I want to go to college and act like I should want something more than retail when I dont, my only issue with retail is the low pay, I dont mind the work, I can handle the customers, I get to just work my 8 hours and go home, no being on call, no being expected to work extra hours, no being expected to bring any work home. Why am I expected to want a whole ass career and go into dept paying student loans for a job i didn't want in the first place?

If you’re a doctor and you meet a patient you generally vibe with what are the rules about becoming real life friends?

For context, I am the patient in this scenario and I genuinely feel like my OB and I would be friends IRL. She’s like the big sister I never had, and we got to be pretty chummy while I was pregnant. I know she mentioned to one of her partners that I was a “special patient.” But now it makes me sad that I can’t actually be friends with her and I only get to see her once a year. I also am not a super outgoing and friendly gal, I tend to only have a very small circle. So I guess my question is could we ever be friends someday? Lol.

Why can't adult humans survive entirely on milk?

I'm not like, advocating for that lifestyle. That would be a really bad idea for a lot of reasons.

But why can a baby live an entire year entirely on milk, but a human adult cannot?
I've seen that "milk doesn't have all the nutrients you need" which makes sense. But if that's true, why can infants go so long living entirely on milk?

Why aren’t prediction markets treated as gambling websites?

Why aren’t prediction market sites treated by governments as gambling websites?

In America, why are website like Kalshi and Polymarket not treated as gambling sites?

Polymarket, Kalshi and sites like them are all over the place in the USA, from sports by events, to pop culture to many many other things.

But in essence, these sites allow you to bet on something, pretty much anything and whether or not that thing will happen.

So, why aren’t they treated as gambling sites when you are essentially placing bets.

Caught a live mouse in what was supposed to be a kill trap. How do I put it down humanely

A mouse got its front paw stuck in the trap. It's stuck and can't run, but it can wiggle, and I don't want to get bitten. I don't have nitrile gloves.

I'm not the one who set the trap, I'm staying with family right now and they're all asleep (it's midnight in my time zone and I'd rather not wake anyone if possible).

Update: ended up opening the trap into a plastic bag and stomping on the mouse. Honestly, I took so long preparing to stomp on the poor thing it might have suffocated first.

Why has male homosexuality been so much more stigmatized historically than lesbianism?

Not saying the latter hasn't been stigmatized, but let's be real here, the witch hunt has mainly been directed at homosexual men specifically
